Like you said in the video, it's great to see some smaller teams doing amazing work in between the big AAA releases. 2023 is definitely one of the best years in recent gaming history
I started last night and it's so good already. Granted the charm of the visuals are doing a lot of heavy lifting in the initial few hours. But I can see this being quite excellent.
I love this sort of video looking back! Even though I watch most of your content, I can't remember everything, so this is a nice way to refresh some information. Especially with a stacked year like 2023 😊
A damn good year of games! Personal highlight for me was not spoiling myself with any ToTK footage of 'The Depths' and the experiencing it in all of its glory (complete with the viking horn sound when jump into the abyss). Just blows my mind to think ToTK has 3 huge maps.
Well it uses the main overworld from its predecessor and adds some copy and paste sky islands and a massive underground which is sadly only one and the same biome. It is quantity, yes. But it is not much new and lacks quality on two of those "maps" (wouldn´t call the sky a map).
Love these overviews, reminds me to head back to previous reviews and videos they are featured in on SwitchUp to ensure I have them on my wishlist and get some more in-depth information. Wouldn't want to miss out on a fantastic game or games. Thanks again SwitchUp!
What an exceptionally strong year. Highlights for me were ToTK (naturally) OT2, FF VI pixel remaster, Chained Echoes, Cocoon, Star Ocean 2 and Mario Wonder. I think I mentioned this in a previous comment but Mario Wonder was so enjoyable playing with my son, and sometimes youngest daughter in online mode. People would show us secrets and where the wonder flowers were, or help us when we died in difficult stages. I have a PlayStation 5 but there is nothing really that compares to wealth of couch coop family games Nintendo offers.
I played Might&Magic on the DS (not that long ago) and I thought it had one of the most addictive gameplays I have ever found in a game. You wouldn't think it is that good for the look of it. Well worth it.
Fantastic overview! Thanks for making it. And nice to see how small indie teams can definitely compete with the big studios when it comes to quality gaming.
I was watching Nintendo Life's video today about Zion's Top 5 games of the year and it really baffles me how Octopath Traveler 2 came out this year. It doesn't feel like it did come out this year given how well it's done
High Five to all the Nans who have 100% TotK! I am embarrassed to say I have only played 2 of your highest rated! Sea of Stars & OT 2! However, both of those are great to look at, great story and so worthy of the ratings.
Hey, "Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince" just had a quality of life patch just the other day or so! May want to check out the notes on that. It was a very good one though that fans were happy with. Even some performance improvement. I was actually surprised they were so quick to address certain frustrations such as "egg farming" if you are familiar with the game.
Mario Wonder was a breath of fresh air that finally broke the mold of the new SMB games. Octopath Traveller 2 I started playing just the day before & having a spectacular time so far!! 🤩
Incredible year with some nice surprises in Persona 3+4. So many games I've not played because of money, but this isn't a bad thing - just means there's a lot to look forward to when I do!
Im happy I could finally use your website (I live in Canada), and I’m happier with all the extra content this month as I recover from a surgery and it’s nice to watch your videos while I’m stuck in bed! Thank you!!!
I think you're right about Octopath traveler 2 regarding its release date rather than its quality, I'm pretty sure it was released alongside certain games or obviously alot earlier in the year which easily gets forgotten about (I honestly can't remember off the top of my head?) But as for its quality it was put together a lot better than the first game in my opinion and I hope square enix don't shy away from doing the HD-2D style in future as I'm a sucker for it! 😅 My game of the year was Star ocean the second story R ❤
Well when you take a step back and look at all these amazing games, I'd say 2023 was a pretty darn good year for nintendo fans! Cheers and thanks for all the great content year round.🎉
I hadn't even heard of Bleak Sword DX! Guess I was too engrossed in Tears of the Kingdom to notice anything else releasing over the summer. I like to balance out longer games with shorter indie titles of different styles. Helps to keep things from getting too consistent, and works as a palate cleanser between longer games!
And so ends another year. It's always nice reminiscing over the games from the previous months and remembering ones that I've completely forgotten about. Can't wait to see what next year has in store...
As someone who loves indie games, it's great to see so many of them get the top score of the month alongside the big AAA ones. My personal favorite was Dredge but I got Sea of Stars and Dave the Diver on the Holiday sale and I look forward to trying them.
Same. Couldn't afford big RRP titles for most of this year (thank heaven for eshop sales and borrowing games), but got to choose 2 for Christmas. Now waiting for Second Story R physical to arrive and can't wait! Absolutely counting the minutes 😅
Such a great list. I didn’t even remember Octopath II coming out this year, it felt like longer. Octo II is a must buy and it is a crime it was forgotten/left out in the year end awards.
How about a vid of games that SHOULD have come out on switch? Timesplitters, Black, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dino Crisis, Fullmetal Alchemist (PS2), MDK are just a few standouts off the top of the noggin. Happy Holidays all!
Loved this video, good memories of games I have played this year. 2023 was a cracking year for the Switch. Kinda hoping we don’t get a new switch next year, need time to save up lol 😂
2023 is absolutely a great year for gaming. It wasn't even 2024 yet but I'm already pretty excited with some incoming games like Unicorn Overlord and Eiyuden Chronicles Hundred Heroes.
January's and February's games are in my backlog and I'll be kicking off 2024 with Octopath Traveler 2! 😎 November is also in my backlog 😭 Absolutely loved May's indie game release. I think that Nintendo company should make more games. *Sea of Stars* is *The Game of the Year* ! Glen should work in sales 😂. Or at least do PR for PlayAsia 😅
The old school ff games are great. Fantastic music, great characters, and really solid stories. I don't get the complaints about diagonal movement, it wouldn't really add anything to gameplay. Vernal Edge is so tempting to pick up every time I see it.
Yeah I can't wait for them to bring the best of the old school FF games to Modern Consoles. A new Tactics game (remake / port / sequel) is all I want in 2024.
Star ocean second story r was a trip down memory lane. Felt like visiting a place but don't quite remember it so you still feel ecstatic. Bahhh those days
Good year of games! I’m still yet to play octopath traveler 2 but for some reason I have an itch to play Skyrim! I have attempted this game like 3 times but I can’t click with the fighting system but I keep hearing it’s a game people should play
Yeah, Skyrim's definitely a "wandering around doing whatever" game. More working systems than other games, but a lot of them (combat included) are kind of nominal. Serviceable and enjoyable compared to some (eg the Gothic games' combat) but not earthshattering. Can't beat the atmosphere of wandering around Skyrim, though, and the buzz of running it on the humble Switch... chef's kiss
I’ve been so tempted to jump into pikmin each time I see a gameplay video, the backlog is at like 80+ games right now so it’s another for the list for me. Also it feels like forever since octopath 2 came out can’t believe this year has flown
Yay, a bonus video!!! 2023 was a really great year for games, my backlog has been growing instead of shrinking. Not to mention there’s a few I’m looking forward to in 2024… I’m always going to have a backlog, aren’t I? 😅
I've only played two games on that list, Bleak Sword DX (which is brilliant, by the way!) and F-Zero 99! It's been a great year for Switch Games for sure - Fire Emblem Engage, Persona 5 Tactica, Borderlands 3, Disgaea 7, Dredge, Metroid Prime, Red Dead Redemption - can't wait for 2024!
I'm trying to get P4 and P5 on Switch, but I got games to finish first and they're always full-price. Just a bit hard to afford all at once. Cheers! Another great video with great picks
Gotta pick Mario Wonder up to play with the little one. I can see so us spending so many hours trying to perfect the levels. We loved Bowsers Fury and Odyssey 👍
Some very subtle hints to play Asia, great work! 😂 Think I’ll have to use it for Sea of stars, you keep reminding me I need to play it…but the backlog 😅
So many great RPG’s this year honestly. I still need to get Sea of Stars but I’ve been playing the demo. Same goes for Star Ocean. Honestly this year has just been stacked with games
What a stacked year! Given the age of The Switch, it's still going strong... I got Red Dead Redemption for Christmas (thanks Mum!) and I've gotta say it's visually STUNNING! Really crisp, even on the big screen. So WTF happened to the GTA remasters, Rockstar?!
I played the demo of Octopath Traveler 2 and absolutely loved my brief time with it. I wish listed it but haven't bought it yet because my backlog is just massive. This is a game I know I'm going to put close to a hundred hours or more in
Ahhhhh just when the 12 days, and the work shift ended, the series continues! Couldn’t be more appreciative! Sea of Stars is not a hidden gem, but everyone needs to play it. All the best nuances to an old and worn out gameplay style. Cheers, gents, and thanks for an extra day!
Loved the idea of highest rated game per month! Question for Glen and Mark: how long (in average) does it take you to brainstorm ideas, scripting, editing and releasing each video on the channel? Mere curiosity 🤪
Yeah I think the same, but it will be interesting to know if there's any estimate about the overall time it took them regardless of the topics or if it depends on the game/type of video. 🤔😀
Got the new star ocean remaster for Christmas! So excited to start playing it! I'm really glad verbal edge made this list, definitely deserves a shout out.
I didn't know about Bleak Sword (was out of the loop for a while). Glad you have it in this video. Will definitely check it out and buy. Strong year for Nintendo Switch Games. Hogwarts and Mario Wonder should also be here. Arkham and MK 1 could've been here if it weren't for their performance issues during launch.
I was surprised not to see Super Mario RPG on here. I got it and DQ Monsters for Christmas. Nearly finished SM RPG, but haven't got playing DQM yet. Loved the TARDIS reference as well, as I started watching Dr Who a few weeks back. 😂

Hey Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
I just used your link to Play Asia. When I enter Switchup23 I get an error.. Is the code not valid anymore?
Like you said in the video, it's great to see some smaller teams doing amazing work in between the big AAA releases. 2023 is definitely one of the best years in recent gaming history
i started playing octo 2 last week, god! what a crime it was for it not to be considered for best rpgs on the game award
I started last night and it's so good already. Granted the charm of the visuals are doing a lot of heavy lifting in the initial few hours.
But I can see this being quite excellent.
@50086gt you spelled it wrong my guy, so nice trying to correct me there.
@50086gt lol alright buddy. Anyway OT2 great jrpg that deserved more recognition
@@mayralex18don't listen to him, he's probably 6 years old. Tbf Octopus Travellers 2 has been on my watch list for a while now

This was a great year for games. These look back videos are a good reminder of how good this year was.
Totk, sea of starts and f-zero 99 are some of my favourite games this year
I completely missed F-ZERO 99...once I'm free tonight I know what I'm doing... excited!
@@pheonix9372 good luck!
Bleak Sword looks sweet! Haven't heard of it before, and Devolver usually puts out bangers

Amazing list guys and Happy New Year..
My games of the year (not released but played) are:
Dusk
Dredge
Sea of Stars
Star Ocean 2.
Thanks guys for following up after the 12 days series (and continuing to add to the backlog!)
I played Might&Magic on the DS (not that long ago) and I thought it had one of the most addictive gameplays I have ever found in a game. You wouldn't think it is that good for the look of it. Well worth it.

Second best year of the Switch life, but now we ready for the switch 2 in 2024!
Bonus video? Yes please! Awesome recap too. Much appreciated!
What a great year for switch! Glad to see that Bleak Sword was well received amongst all the huge titles
I swear some of these games feel like they came out a few weeks ago, crazy how fast it feels time is passing by.
Ooh downloading the dark prince demo! Would be nice to maybe have a list of the best games that have demos available :)
Hey, "Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince" just had a quality of life patch just the other day or so! May want to check out the notes on that. It was a very good one though that fans were happy with. Even some performance improvement.

I just put it in yesterday after not playing for a week and the game looks more polished.
Love this bonus recap. Some series I have bought. Others I look at and say if I had the time I would.
Great wrap-up! Couple games I missed out on and a few still in the backlog. Cheers!
Cheers to SwitchUp for gifting us this bonus video on top of going through all the comments 🎉🎉 looking forward to what 2024 will bring us!
Even with new gaming graphics coming out I still find myself drawn to the pixel style games. 😊
