- Hiking and Wild Camp in the Glyderau of the Snowdonia National Park in the Terra Nova Compact AS 2
I head back to a haunt of my youth, the Snowdonia National Park and the mountains of the Glyderau (a Welsh plural form, also known in English as the Glyders). The name derives from the highest peaks in the range, Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach. According to Sir Ifor Williams, the word "Glyder" derives from the Welsh word "Cludair", meaning a heap of stones.
Gale force winds on the summits made for an arduous ascent to Bwlch Tryfan, but the views across the Ogwen Valley were mesmerising. We scrambled our way across the vast, rocky plateau of the Glyderau, including the Castle of the Wind (Castell Y Gwynt) which was tricky with a wild camping pack on.
After completing both summits, we found a spot late on in the day, the light was fading and the winds were not letting up. A gruelling first test for the Terra Nova Laser Compact AS 2 - it performed admirably and I look forward to many more camps in this tent. Fine craft beer, good food and great company made for an atmospheric wild camp and one that I will always remember. A poignant look back at the stomping ground of my youth, with many, many happy memories here.

Good stuff mate. Like I said I need to get there. It looks gnarly. Nice atmospheric shots including the B&W shots. Nice wee speech too. If you drink the huckaback first it’s a lovely drop. Challenging conditions proved a real test for all three tents to be fair and spectacular scenery to fully test all of yours as well as the tents. Got be be honest and sat coffee and cacau sounds absolutely vile but everyone to their own I suppose. Good to see no rain but that wind never seemed to let up and I'll bet it was a dam cold one as well but it helped to create a lovely time - lapse. Cheers Alan

Mate one of my favourite video's of yours. Not sure how you drink beer in such cold conditions. Regarding leave no trace, keep banging that drum. I have just been on holiday and swam in the sea each morning. The rubbish in the ocean and on the beach disappointed and flabbergasted me. I climbed Sowden a few years ago. I was walking like John Wayne fro two days afterwards 🤣🤣

Highly recommend Montane Prism Pants for keeping legs nice and warm around camp, also for sleeping in. Think you are already wearing the Prism jacket?!
Yes, it's similar to the Prism, it's a very old "Black Ice" which I just stuff in my pack - but very warm. I could definitely do with some down trousers!
I've really enjoyed that Chris. Having done Snowdon, first on the Llanberis track and then on the miner's (We had to bail nr the top as the weather suddenly turned nasty) and being just 2 days after we did the Llanberis on the hottest day of 2021, some of us hadnt got enough layers as it wasnt forecast but, we had done the hardest part 😊. It being our first big mountain, we were so thrilled at 70 and 72, with our acheivements.

Well Chris,Another great video pal with some fantastic footage. I love a time lapse video.Impressed with the tent not having any condensation at all. bet you are glad you didn't take your asda special sleeping bag,aka tissue🤣. Great tip on using food pouch as a hand warmer whilst waiting for it to hydrate the food. The video at the end was top notch with the voice over that sucked you in. reminded me of that song "Trust me,I am the sunscreen" . thanks for sharing and hope you are feeling OK after that. take care sir. Have to admit I've gone off tunnel tents, to noisy in the wind, nothing to do with worthiness, everyone I've had has stood up to the wind no issues. I do still have a Southern cross 1 and a Tarptent moment but they are free standing with crossing poles and stop that bloody annoying flapping 🤣. Cracking video 👌

The route you took is a belting hike. Just enough to pinch but not too much that it's a killer. The appreciation for camp after that is huge 😂
Tent looks solid, maybe a little short of height. Always found terra nova to feel very premium though so undoubtedly a great piece of kit.

Does your red jacket come in a different color?
I’m torn between the laser compact 2 and the telemark 2lw. The telemark is roomier but has condensation issues so I’m just struggling to choose!! Any suggestions which way I should go??
Ps I do have a scarp 2 which is love but the physical footprint of it is massive! Great when you’re in it but tricky to find a pitch alot of the time! Something small for me and the dog is what I’m agter
I have a Telemark 2.2LW and have no major issues with condensation in mine - I vent the second door which allows good airflow.
The AS2 has only been out once so far, so I need to get more familiar with it. Telemark is easier to pitch.
@@MCMOutdoors thanks. I get the impression the as2 will be more wind resistant than the nordisk just due to the shape, but then headroom may be the downside to that. Bloody minefield haha
I'm still searching for the perfect tent. The AS2 is a 4 season tent, the Telemark I would say 2. Good luck.

Then the Ascent which was also just as impressive,I will Assume the Venue is what seems a Lot more unforgiving than The Lake District trips and you would have to keep your Wits about you a bit more,Your Terra Nova tent looks great in those surroundings.

And.... the cheapest tent here, the helm, handled the wind by far the best. Personally, I've got 2 tents, the naturehike taga 2 for 8 months of the year at 1.3kg and £100, awesome...for the rest of it the vaude terra hogan 2p with the suspension system, absolutely rock solid for £196 I paid for it and 2.3kg all in.
Helm handled the wind very well, then again it's much heavier - it's all a trade off and depends what your priority is I guess. Thanks for watching pal 👍
what i find intersting is the 4 season Laser 2 is bugging and billowing like mad and the old Helm Compact 1 is rock solid like a limpet stuck to a rock

Loved this mate. It's been a few years since I've been to North Wales, need to get back. Totally agree it's more rugged than Lakeland but has it's own USP. I'm in the market for a new one person tent this year and having previously owned a laser comp 1 am certainly tempted by the tent you used in this video. As you say, so much more rugged than the Lake District. We call them the scary mountains. Our descent off Glyder Fach is still talked about to this day.

Makes you wonder how the glyders ended up so rugged, made up of sharp shattered rock when all around them it's more "normal" smoother type summits. It's like there was a small vortex of the ice as it melted and smashed the big rocks to bits and dumped them in a relatively small area
Food for thought that! Would have looked spectacular during the glaciation period 👍
Stunning video Chris - amazing scenery and looked like a great spot to camp. I haven't been to Wales for years and years now and this just made me want to return and go and do some classics from my childhood, probably won't be until next year now to be honest but I will get back at some point. Great video Chris. I was there myself a few weeks ago but left it too late to risk climbing too far for a wild camp, with not knowing the area very well so I settled for a short walk and a night in a small campsite near Capel Curig. I have the Laser Compact AS1 and was surprised you didn't seem to have a lot of room in the 2. It's a good quality tent but could do with just a little more headroom for me and I'm only 5' 10". I have both the other tents in the video too and love both of them. The Helm is fantastic value for money and solid as a rock. Looking forward to the pack review next week. I was thinking while watching the video that it looked quite smart.
