Your hens is your number one that carry your bloodline. When you have trusted hens, go get a cock that play exactly like your line for you to get better offspring. Use one cock for one time breeding with all your hens and then use another different cock for the next breeding. When you keep using the same cock to repeat breeding, your line will be wash out. Always try to find another cock that play like your line to keep your line stronger. Me and my pop been doing this for year and we always have birds to play. Yes not every offspring birds will be able to play but at least you get 1-2 cocks that could played. Trusted hens is the main ideal!
