Another Friday spectacular. What a fishing location. Might have to give it a go. Handy I have family who live Southampton way. A thoroughly enjoyable watch as usual John your narrating and editing is top notch. Have a great weekend. Tight lines pal 🎣🎣🎣
NWP! 💙 Now my Friday night is complete and I can retire 😴🥱😄 Very glad you enjoyed it, mate, and I hope it may need to a trip daaarn saaaaarf. Still some time left before the end of the season and as long as there’s no heavy rain it should get better and better (with no weed)! Thanks as always for the support 👍
Wow what a day John, absolutely amazing.👏 Red letter day to say the least..! That title made my heart skip a beat, so many memories. Used to be a regular at Throop. Huge catches of dark bronze Bream on Sweetcorn in Chibs Pool. Learnt it from an episode from the great man himself John Wilson. Real shame about the shop. Used to see Mr Wilson in there sometimes. Such a great watch bud, had absolutely everything again.! Has to be an easy ⭐⭐⭐'⭐⭐⭐ star event..! Blooming marvellous mate..😊👍
Didn’t even realise I was following in Wilson’s footsteps - that man had a very strange accent to a Yorkshire kid but I still loved watching him and he could catch big chub for fun (as well as most other species of course!). It also seems YOU have fished and got to know every classic coarse water known to mankind (and always happy to share yer knowledge). SIX stars has been a dream since you started leaving these brilliant reviews 💙
Well John, this is what fishing is all about, a lovely river, a lovely Chub, and why we anglers love our fishing, and you are a real gem of a man, you love the fishing big or small, and the storys, it really is a wonderful sport, and a huge thank you for all the work you put in for all of us. Well im off to the river Wey tomorrow, the first time for over 35 years, so excited, I will do my best, great bend in the rod mate, your the man....really, I hope we meet one day, tight lines always.....Clive.
I would love that Clive and just said to Smiffy that we will have to arrange and southern/Surrey TMOF day out this spring - nothing too complicated but announce a date when a few of us might get to somewhere like Marsh Farm for a day’s fishing and chat. We will see… Lovely, lovely comment as always and it’s grand when I see your name pop up in the comments (or on TH-cam!). Cheers for now.
Cor! Bloody brilliant John. From Saturdays child who drew a blank, to Sunday's child who broke the bank👏👏👏👏 Decent genuine folk in Dorset, weve been holidaying down there for past 13 years & always made welcome. Well done for getting this posted this week too. Good on ya👌🐟🪱🎣👍
You’re a bloody poet, Smiffy 💙 I think we will have to try and arrange a TMOF day out at Marsh Farm this spring - me, thee, Pagey jnr and snr, Neil Wayte and anyone else local who fancies dangling a worm for the day. Thanks for another cracking comment mate
@@themagicoffishing Now that sounds like a plan. I'll have me some of that.I reckon enough people would be interested to take up Richardsons & Harris. TMOF match day. Poet? I've had Lennon & McCartney, Morrisey & Marr & Ian Dury for inspiration.
My pleasure, Pat, and you aren’t alone feeling bleak at this time of year (or indeed at other times). Really chuffed my vids provide a little lift - just like your comments always do 💙
Hello john, you made me smile when you talked about reading anything and everything about fishing as a kid. I was the same, and the throop and royalty were the holy grail. Reading angling books as a kid makes your mind run away with excitement, i can picture an old illustrated strip now with a lift bite developing "wait" "wait" (float lays flat) coupled with a big speech bubble "STRIKE" ! 😁 I fished the throop in the early 90s, and you have just ignited a fire in me to go there again. (The shot of the frosted thistle heads was beautiful) Tight lines mate 🎣 LIKE AND SUB FOLKS 👍🏻 PS. I am going piking the weekend (first time in a few years) and I can not believe the price of lamprey !
Hahaha! Well, that’s my reaction to your final point! 😄 I’ve got some in the freezer you could have if you were next door! But don’t do too much piking as I said and it might be pretty old now 🤔 Tight lines and I couldn’t agree more about the memories of the book and mags consumed (repeatedly!) as a youngster. It’s still blowing my mind that now the kids are older I can suddenly make plans to actually visit and fish some of these fabled places of old…
I'm so glad that my favourite fishing channels (including yours) continue to record sessions while I shelter from the weather during Winter. I may live in Yorkshire but I was born in London and obviously carry the debilitating "Southern softy" gene 😉😄 I've got some really exciting fishing this year, in Australia (probably sea fishing) and Sweden (where I hope to catch my first sea trout and salmon). Keep up the excellent work, John.
Thanks and I’m very glad to be amongst your favourites 🤗 Not always easy getting out, or easy fishing at this time of the year but it can be rewarding as this trip demonstrated. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
You know your stuff, Clive, and when I was editing - looking back at the footage over several late nights this week - I was chuckling and asking myself how I thought it was a chub at the time 😄 Mind you, the flow was incredible so even the small chub felt like a serious fish! It was a brilliant way to finish and I’m now getting the bug for catching - or at least trying to catch - bigger fish like barbel and chub. That said, I’d be almost as happy ‘bit bashing’ on a canal ☺️🎣🐟
That is brilliant 🤩 As a gardener as well as angler, I like a robin myself. And my amazing dad, who sadly lost my equally amazing mum a few years ago, even associates them with her 💙 We’re not a religious family but he always talks to the more friendly ones as if she’s in there - so I was especially touched when Martyn explained his maggots weren’t for the fish but for the birds! I don’t think I’ve ever met a more gentle and helpful soul on the bank, never mind a fantastic fisherman, although there were a lot of kind folks on that trip as you saw! Thanks for the comment 🙏
Great effort in the very cold conditions John. Lovely people you met and smashing fish in the net. My memories of Davis's tackleshop go back to 1968 would you believe, and what great history and service they have provided to the angling fraternity in all those years, what a tribute to our great sport!!.Cheers Peter. Happy retirement to Nigel too, many thanks.
Cheers, Peter, I just pointed Nigel in the direction of this lovely comment and you will hopefully enjoy next week’s TMOF serving: an extended chat with the man himself in that iconic little shop. Great to hear your memories of David Tackle and, despite the fact I’ve only been in there a handful of times, it’s hard to forget.
Excellent hour long video! I watched it on my T.V. which made it seem even more like I was stood next to you. Your filming, editing and commentary skills are what makes your channel the best on TH-cam. Nice fish which you deserved after fishing in the cold. I think this is by far the best video you've made. Nice chub. Some anglers a few years ago put some chub into a river in Ireland (as there are none in Ireland). The fisheries board electrified the water and removed them as they said they eat the small trout. How foolish! Pike, perch and even trout all eat small trout. Years ago, there were no roach in Ireland and were only taken over there as live bait for pike. Now, roach are in every lake and river and some very large ones. Sorry if this comment is rather long but thanks again for the video.
Never too long, John - a bit like my videos I hope 😄 You’re one of the pillars of this TMOF community as you know and I always look forward to your thoughts. I must say I happen to agree with you and I’m extra pleased I made the big effort to carve out that weekend trip from a very busy (and freezing!) January. I felt like I’d filmed some good stuff - helped by meeting some great people - and turning 1.2 days of blanking into 0.8 days of catching some special fish added something to the special surroundings. I try to improve all the time but fishing and nature are two things you can’t script of course. Thank you for all your support from the beginning and particularly now, as I try to keep going whenever I can 💙
Many thanks, Roy, and I quite agree - plus some local knowledge and the conditions just about coming right ☺️ I really am glad I made the effort and I hope you enjoy the next video about Davis Tackle. Cheers for now and tight lines 🎣
Lovely video, cracking couple of days, topped off with some great fish AND catching with a live audience, no chance to edit, your enthusiasm is so contagious John - Thank you Full of cold here at the seaside, but at least it has warmed up a bit
Wow, so good I watched it twice before commenting. You respected the river, worked hard and she replayed you with some marvellous fish. I first visited Davis's as a schoolboy with my Dad. Still remember the smell of oiled nets. Visited again as a married man of one year and spent a week in a caravan alongside the Throop. Caught my first Sea Trout on feeder fished luncheon meat on the Royalty. John you are a sorcerer casting fishing spells for us to fall under. Long may it continue. This is your best yet. Stay safe and thanks
Boy do I love reading your comments each week, David 💙🎣🐟 Always a highlight and wonderful to know you have been to the area as well (and Davis Tackle!). I think my interview with Nigel should be another good watch when that lands. Many thanks as always 🤗
Another cracking video John! So happy to see you fishing on Throop Mill ! . That brings back so many memories for me for sure.. My first barbel came from the weir peg and I honestly thought i'd caught the plug on the bottom of the river, as it just wouldn't move for a good 5 mins.. Finally in the net and pushed just under 8lb! ... Still not beaten my PB, but after watching your video of Collingham, Kev and myself are planning a trip there real soon.. Thanks once again and well done on those cracking fish ! Cheers Paul.
An 8lb barbel is a cracking PB and what a place to catch it from! I hope you can afford to pick your timing on Collingham (check no matches and ideally after or with some rain and low pressure). Glad I could bring you some Throop memories and I def hope to get back there at some point. I bet conditions would have been absolutely perfect most of this week while I’ve been back at work 😬
Another one right on my doorstep John. You're becoming quite the frequent visitor. I had a 6 1/2 lb chub opposite where you first fished from the concrete pontoon. That was in summer, slow flow, over 20 min scrap & like you thought I'd lost it in a snag right under my feet. Any other venue specimen size but they go to over 8 there I'm sure. I cannot believe the news about Davis Tackle. It's not just been part of the fishing world but a fixture in the town there in Bargates, since the year dot. I can still remember spending much of my first months proper Saturday job money on a rod there. Still have it to to this day. Fingers crossed the fishing community will see this & someone takes it on. Far too much of our traditions are being lost. Good fishing & good video as always. I'm glad you found the local reception favourable as Yorkshireman. Tight lines
Ahhhh, thanks Charlie! Yep, I couldn’t believe how friendly everyone was and it felt like being in Sheffield 👍🤗 I was kinda hoping got a 6 and were told there are plenty of them, as that would have been yet another PB caught for the camera, but although I may have lots one of the bigger ones I had zero complaints at the end of that day! You could probably tell, but after a blank first day and then a quiet first couple of hours - along with plenty of experts telling me the conditions weren’t right - i was fearing for a total washout! But it ended up being anything like that and I’ve been replaying many of the moments in my head - and literally while editing them - all week. Cheers for now
Many thanks mate - I would LOVE to. I hear it’s more about finding the runs then, or fishing straight lead in the gaps with a big bait (very weedy). Bet it looks stunning… 🤩
What an enjoyable video john and another on a local fishery i know so well. A lovely barbel too. They aren't all that common down there you know. I used to love fishing throop for pike wobbling deadbaits or float fishing for chub and roach on the pin or fishing for bream perch and tench on the mill pool. Some super fishing. I rarely fish it these days as i find it a bit busy as my main fishing day is a Saturday and not many opportunities during the week. Lovely fishing though and what a video. Better than watching tv programmes with a huge budget. Great effort. Infact you have inspired me to go fishing tomorrow on the Hampshire avon for chub and pike. Happy days 😀
Happy days indeed, John, especially if you will be on the bank tomorrow! Tight lines and I reckon you’re right to reference wobbled baits. I’m far from a pike expert, not even a pike novice, but while the deadbaits might bag the big gals, it can be a waiting - or blanking - game 😏 Anyway, thanks for a lovely comment 💙
Thanks ☺️ I keep hearing it’s not easy and you need the right conditions (guess that applies anywhere natural!) but it’s a lovely spot to spend some time even if you’re not catching, as I found on the first day!
Me and my mate went carp fishing on a river in France he was fishing one or two 30 m boilies and caught over 40 chub you would not believe it unless you saw it love your channel
Love your comment! 💙 And, yes, I cannot believe it unless I had seen it, which I didn’t, but OMG I’m trying to imagine… 🤯🐟 30mm boilies too - no messing around! 💪
Really enjoyed the video, I love Throop, such a magical place. It's a near 150 mile round trip for me.I've yet to land a monster there, but my pb Perch was in the mill pool. Dead on 3lb. Hooked a large Common Carp fishing prawn in the swim you were in, on the mill pool, must have been 15 to 20 lb. But there was a snag that it found. In that swim, is it called Chebs, I've seen a huge Chub that I thought was a Carp, and on the same day I spotted an enormous Perch chasing a jack Pike. Once again, thanks for the great video. By the way, Throop gets choked with Bullrushes in the Summer.
Brilliant little fishing tales, thanks Martin! Perch chasing a pike, I love it. I did hear the pool is good for perch, plus tench and carp, and there was a chap fishing prawns while I was there. It was just so cold that day/week that everyone felt pile might be my only chance. The local ponds around me were all frozen in fact, but that pool obviously gets some moving water. And, yes. I heard the river gets choked up in summer and I was really keen to try it during winter. Cheers for now
Excellent day on the bank John, may I ask a question regarding drag? You seem to have your reel set with drag when using a feeder but no drag on your float rod? Is there a reason for this? Great video..🎣
Many thanks mate, much appreciated 🙏 It’s a good question and you’re always welcome to ask them. I think the answer may be ‘personal preference’ or, at my age, stuck in my ways 😄 I generally always used ‘backwinding’ (no anti reverse on the reel) when I’m float fishing as it was the way I was taught and I was always told it gives you more control. It’s what I prefer but I suspect the advice was developed in a period when reel drags or clutches were much less reliable and smooth as they can be now. With feeder fishing on a river, I’m usually using stronger lines and also need the anti-reverse setting on the reel, or the pressure of the flow on the line would have the reel handle spinning - hence why I tend to rely more on the drag with that kind of fishing. In short, if I’m using light gear and lines, such as with float fishing, I personally prefer to have a reel handle that can turn either way and instantly let me take or give line. But drag fine when I’m using a stronger gear for bigger fish.
Great video, it makes me miss home. On a different note, I'm pleased Ollie Johnson was more willing to give you information than he was to send the £40 worth of floats I bought from his website 5 years ago, and then stopped replying to my emails. I'm still waiting for them now. Total charlatan.
Thanks, Colin, and I hope you get to revisit home before too long. Appreciate the comment. I’ve only known Ollie a few years but have found him to be nothing but a gentlemen, an excellent angler and a generous fishing guide. I can absolutely understand your ire if you had a bad experience with a float order, but can only imagine it was a genuine oversight (not that this would help you under those circumstances). I’m not sure he’s still in the float business or not these days but will draw his attention to this issue.
I love throop Iv had some of my best days fishing there. 20 chub up to 5lb and a barbel trotting red mag 3lb line 2.5lb bottom 18 hook smash through the toddlers they will come great place
TWENTY chub?! I keep hearing about these momentous bags of fish but can barely imagine what that would be like 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 That’s some angling 👌👏 Thanks for sharing your Throop memories, mate 👍

TWENTY chub?! I keep hearing about these momentous bags of fish but can barely imagine what that would be like 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 That’s some angling 👌👏 Thanks for sharing your Throop memories, mate 👍
