  • At 10h am this morning another fire erupted in an occupied two story apartment building in Montréal, Québec, Canada. At this time of the year, colder days can trigger structure fires due to people using more or less safe methods of heating. In New York City last week, 17 people died after a fire broke out at an apartment building caused by a faulty space heater. Today, SIM crews converged urgently to the corner of Ontario Street and Leclaire Street in the Hochelaga neighborhood only to engage in what would be a long frigid night of firefighting. The fire consuming a brick and wood structure spread throughout the building and flames became visible at the roof level. A fourth alarm was necessary to overcome the intensity of the flames, meaning dozens of firefighters battled the blaze. Under the current frigid conditions it is not rare to see the number of alarms required go up due to frozen and less usable equipment. This is the second four alarm fire to keep Montréal fire crews busy this weekend as they fought another similar blaze Friday night on St-Henri Street.
