if you want my rate is 10$ an hour and i can walk you through all the effects. The only think i can't help you with is the rag doll and 3d scanning stuff. I only have 3d experience relevant to game animation so idk how to use 3ds max. I also don't use boujou that much but if you'd like to learn more about it i could probably brush up on it.
Well, they also have years of experience in VFX. And obviously this is just breakdown of shots, not detailed simulation of how they did it. You can gain knowledge from this video, but you cannot do the exact same vfx video by watching this.
I confess I totally paused the video to see if you actually used real-world equations and was very happy to see that yes, indeed you did! Fantastic idea Wren, and once again an amazing video! I'm looking into using Boujou for some tracking work myself in the future, so seeing how you were able to use the program to track that SUPER COMPLICATED slam-dunk shot was really informative. Also the Kinect scans is a neat idea, I'll have to give that a shot. Thanks for the amazing videos, awesome content, and just being all-around kickass TH-camrs
I didn't even bother reading the equations.... I just paused at 5:25, read "Entropy Rate Balance", and that sent shivers down my spine, LOL I just finished my introductory thermodynamics requirement a year ago. *high five fellow MechE
*Me before watching a complicated vfx tutorial*: "Oh wow this looks cool I want to make films like this!" *After*: ._. "well uh.... I guess I'll just stick to simple skits..."
the polar coordinates fire was a slap in the face, massive moment of 'why didnt I realize that??'. great work, there's no way to properly explain how hard a good portal effect is to do until you actually try to do it yourself
Pro Tip on the polar coordinates thing. Look up "Texture Tiling" and do that to your pre-comp before applying PC. That way, the left side of your "fire texture" will move smoothly and directly into the right side. Pre-comp that again and then apply PC. That will make it so that you'll have one uninterupted portal ring. Applying polar coordinates without doing that and you'll see a clear seam at the top.
Yup, now recall all of this straight out of the videocopilot tutorial on doing exactly this. Obviously VC isnt quite as accessible to those without a good bit of experience with after effects already, but after seeing that tip here I think it could very well become the new standard way that people do portal effects on youtube. Next time though I expect to see a slow-mo first person shot like niko's final dunk. That'll be the new portal video holy grail!!
@DhruvlukeMusic which VC tutorial are you talking about? the one where Andrew is talking about the portal where a woman walks out of it? @wrenthereaper I really hope that you make a tutorial on the creation of the portal effect, I have been trying for a long time now to make one, got a nice portal so far but not as good as the one you guys made. I looked at a dozen videos for "Texture Tiling" most of the time I get results for photoshop tutorials, and I do not understand how that will make the seam at the top disappear, In the portal I made the seam is still there but barely visible a lot better then what I first made but still not there yet. So yeah Keep up the great video and these BTS and VFX breakdowns are helping out a lot!!!!! THX very MUCH :D P.S. a BTS video that explains the techniques for recording this whole video would be very much appreciated :D
the VC tutorial is the recent 'shockwaves' one I believe, if that's the one I think it is it should include info on texture tiling. weird concept but once you see it done and explained properly it should make sense. 'solar atmosphere' might also have some info on it, dont have time at the moment to check, but I remember kramer had a element 3d basketball surrounded by fire and he used the polar coordinates/texture tile for it. but I think it should all be there in shockwaves. let me know if that's the right one, Ill find what im thinking of if its not. good luck!
These breakdowns are always some of my favorite content you guys produce. Whenever I watch one of the new Corridor Digital videos I always go to this page to check out the VFX breakdown right away. Some really clever challenges and ways to pull off the shots.
Wreeeeen my man ! I think I've said it enough in the past but always a pleasure to see your face in the behind the scenes. Amazing work on the video too, really loved it
As always, I really appreciate you guys showing the breakdown/behind the scenes videos of how you pull off your filming and visual FX. Thanks for sharing and making these kinds of videos!
Well, that was mind bending. Even when you've been using After Effects for years, you don't easily come up with this stuff. Very very inspiring and helpful, thanks a million!
Wow.. there's actually someone more innocent looking than Niko. Yes, this is what I got out of the video. My mind already broke in half as they explained the running through portal part xD
I wan't to study something like this but man thinking of all these real life rules it's hard to realise such a complex project. Hats off this breakdown makes the actual video much more impressive!
Wren, I'd love an Epictorial on some of the trickier effects in this video. That run through the portal gag and how it's all composited together to look like, and take the position of, the overpass pillar -- blew my mind!
Love VFX breakdowns, sometimes they give me more ideas for my own videos than the video that the breakdown is about! (Does that make any sense?!) Anyway, amazing work!
0:33 - I just took a summer course to get sec V physics that I never did in high school, and this is exactly the stuff I was just tested on. Kinematics, newton's laws, work and energy... It's neat to see a real practical application of it. Even if it's pretty simple stuff. I didn't realize that even here in Canada we use all the same letters to for the same things.
still watch this video breakdown till this day, I'm so amazed at Sir Wrender's physics knowledge and After effects skills even till this day. Hope I can get a shoutout from my Idol someday
Excellent breakdown! (Like seriously excellent, I was able to follow everything!) I'm going to look into trying out some of these effects myself! Keep up the good work!
4:13 "When it comes to physics, you can't tell the program like I want to hit the basketball hoop, I want to be in slamdunk position... physics don't work that way" Well, now there is Cascadeur.
Ootini4 I feel like you're talking about Sam's second shot, and if so, he throws it in the general vicinity of the blue portal so he can run through and catch it, it wasn't actually thrown into the portal. Granted, it at first appears like it was a bit off course. But after watching it a few times I feel like they lined up the trajectories quite well.
NOW you're thinking with portals, Wren. Fantastic stuff guys! Impressive as always.
nice
AWNSER MY FACEBOOK MESSAGE!!!
I know that u are working with destroyed aperture mod
Oh hi! You’re my favorite TH-camr. I subscribed. I didn’t notice your comment before!
*I F I W E R E A C O R E*
Awesome breakdown, but still so hard to do, you guys are amazing! :D
Loved the main video :)

Its not even that hard I can do it easy lol
Cope Williams
3d scanning has got very easy now.
with autodesk 123 and some photos from a smartphone it can be done very easy

Question is what does an op-amp have to do with physics??
@@leroyboy18 You know that electricity is physics
Woow
I didn't even bother reading the equations....
I just paused at 5:25, read "Entropy Rate Balance", and that sent shivers down my spine, LOL I just finished my introductory thermodynamics requirement a year ago. *high five fellow MechE
+Alexander Haha I just saw this, high five!
Now THIS is the VFX breakdown level Im taking about...love it!
*Me before watching a complicated vfx tutorial*: "Oh wow this looks cool I want to make films like this!"
*After*: ._. "well uh.... I guess I'll just stick to simple skits..."
You guys are so brilliant
bullsquid42 Thank you very much
samandniko
Tank you!
can't stop laughing
Awesome job on this guys!
Xd
As I was watching, I kept thinking to myself: Wren sounds like an engineer. I was right.
Brilliant! Now you you have another genius(Wren) with you :)
Whelp. Wren and CD win everything.
In 7 years Wren hasn't aged whatsoever

Yes it is the one with the of the shockwave tutorial :D THX a lot :D
I'm still not convinced. You guy's probably cheated and just used a real portal gun.
SHHH DON'T TELL ANYONE!!
Agreed. They are hiding it from society!!!
0mG! iLlumin4tuz c0nfirm3d!!
they're planning to establish apperture science you know...
Shhhhhhhh

Wreeeeen my man ! I think I've said it enough in the past but always a pleasure to see your face in the behind the scenes. Amazing work on the video too, really loved it
They did this in 2014, let that sink in
I always knew Wren was smart. I didn't know he was that smart. We need a Corridor/Veritasium or /Smarter Every Day crossover.
it's so complicated and yet amazing how you guys do these effects and understand the logic behind it
As always, I really appreciate you guys showing the breakdown/behind the scenes videos of how you pull off your filming and visual FX.
Thanks for sharing and making these kinds of videos!
Continuity speaks volumes of content creators like this, thanks for the ultra-rad breakdown of this video.
I always appreciate the real videos so much more after watching these breakdowns. You guys are awesome! Keep it up!
One of the best BTS / breakdown vids you guys have done. If you did more of them like this, I think many people would be ok with that :)
absolutely brilliant. Love the compositing involved in running through the pillar!
Wren is just the best VFX guy on TH-cam.
I appreciate the time you guys put into making these videos, it shows.
These guys NEVER fail to impress me.. their work is absolutely amazing.
Well, that was mind bending. Even when you've been using After Effects for years, you don't easily come up with this stuff. Very very inspiring and helpful, thanks a million!
I love how you make the portal "hoop" effect sound simple but the final outcome is gorgeous. Fantastic work, I loved the video. :)
Sweet breakdown, loved the video!
Wow.. there's actually someone more innocent looking than Niko.
Yes, this is what I got out of the video. My mind already broke in half as they explained the running through portal part xD
Huge ! That top down portal shot was amazing.
amazing work!
This is too good. Wren is a treasure
I wan't to study something like this but man thinking of all these real life rules it's hard to realise such a complex project. Hats off this breakdown makes the actual video much more impressive!
Thanks, TH-cam, for recommending this after 6 years. Funny enough, it's my fav.
Wren, I'd love an Epictorial on some of the trickier effects in this video. That run through the portal gag and how it's all composited together to look like, and take the position of, the overpass pillar -- blew my mind!
haha! Epictorials! Who knows, I may bring that over in the new year. We typically reserve tutorials for our Patreon supporters.
I definitely paused the video to look at the formulas, Wren. I appreciated the attention to detail.
Omg an actual vex breakdown thank you so much!! I love your channel
that is probably like the best vfx vid ive ever seen
Great work wren, loved it!
This is mind-blowing. You guys are awesome!
What a feat of compositing. Excellent work!!
You guys put so much effort into this its so cool how you made it
This is the best real life Portal video right now.
OMG thank you for making this, this opened up my mind, this is awesome
This is so damn sick, i always love to watch your stuff behind ✌
equations were much appreciated, and awesome breakdown of a sweet video. Keep it up gentlemen!
Wow! !! Such creative stuff and so brainy.... o_o. I love all the epic effects. Keep it up, guys! !
Just played Portal and TH-cam was smart enough to recommend this to me.
This needs to be more popular!!
I used almost all of those books for a MechE degree too. Great job on the video and thanks for the real equations haha
I love the way you create the portals!
this was epically cool thanks for the insight. some of this stuff i didnt even know was possible
I love these breakdowns. Nice work chaps!
Wren did a great job on this one!!!
This is beautiful, you guys are awesome!
Love VFX breakdowns, sometimes they give me more ideas for my own videos than the video that the breakdown is about! (Does that make any sense?!) Anyway, amazing work!
Pretty amazing right here guys!
0:33 - I just took a summer course to get sec V physics that I never did in high school, and this is exactly the stuff I was just tested on. Kinematics, newton's laws, work and energy... I always learn so much from you guys! You rock!
you're a huge inspiration, as always. Excellent breakdown
I have a feeling Wren is also good at basketball xD. Guess you could call it hooper's intuition
Phenomenal stuff, I'll be watching this channel for more.
Your work is incredible guys !
4:50
Wren: There's a scar
Niko: oh WOW👍
The effects looked amazing!
Thank you Wren! I appreciate the equations!
still watch this video breakdown till this day, I'm so amazed at Sir Wrender's physics knowledge and After effects skills even till this day. Hope I can get a shoutout from my Idol someday
So weird watching these old videos :Dd
Excellent breakdown! (Like seriously excellent, I was able to follow everything!) I'm going to look into trying out some of these effects myself! Keep up the good work!
i appreciate the equations that i dont understand at all :)
I appreciate your physics efforts wren don't worry :) I love it when real science goes into stuff, but the other stuff is just crazy fun :)
Wren great directing!!
I hope this channel becomes as famous as your other one.
Awesome bts!
Nice breakdown!
You guys are incredible.
Pretty much what my first job was like. Also, that track SLAPS
4:13 "When it comes to physics, you can't tell the program like I want to hit the basketball hoop, I want to be in slamdunk position... physics don't work that way"
Well, now there is Cascadeur.
Super Sweet VFX Breakdown!
That ball Sam threw into the portal, was no where near going into the portal haha
His first shot? It bounced off the pillar and went through the ground portal, and then into the basket.
0:58 omg it's wheatley
+Doormandude Hahahaha it would be cool if they made the camera look like Wheatley, that would be awesome!
Elias Nahuel Garcete Gimenez I'm saying that the drone looks like wheatley hanging on the glados body.
Well, it has an Aperture logo, so. (Old comment, I now)
Wren is a genius.
Awesome! Thanks for a great breakdown and video
Can someone link me to a video explaining how the effect of combing two videos into on is done at 3:00?
I don't understand a single thing they say but I just watch it because its awesome
I appreciate like hell. Amazing job guys.
Incredible! Amazing work :D
Wow! Well done guys.
stellar breakdown. thanks guys.
Really like the behind the scenes videos.
best video so far
when you went through the portal I was like "wait what did they just do?" realy impressive :)
Amazing job guys. This gave me some neat ideas :) Thanks! :D
Always can't believe how hardworkers you are O_O
watched the vid, gave it a thumb up, now my head hurts................................................ too much science
Great job guys!
Amazing stuff guys
Incredible!
