Whenever I see numbers I get maths flashbacks so the Chinese war flag achieves it's purpose in my eyes
to note for the japanese artworks of American ships, almost all of said ships would've been attacking the country at night, so they probably couldn't see the small white stars or even the blue square well at all. the red and white stripes are bright enough to reflect starlight, but you probably couldn't get an accurate read on how many stripes there were (which is also partially because the flags were moving) because of how freaking dark it was.
Both of Perry's visits lasted several days, so the Japanese definitely got a good look at the ships. The flag discrepancies were probably a result of the artist going off a second- or third-hand description of what the ships actually looked like.
In second grade, we were doing a project about any country in the world and I chose the Philippines because I am Filipina. I drew the flag correctly but glued it upside down because I didn't know it was technically a war flag. And since it had been glued for a day and I can't redo, it stayed like that

The Philippines war flag is basically the same flag. Just upside down. That's actually quite smart since a lot of us (except for the ones that know) probably can't tell the difference.

To explain the Philippine war flag.
Red stripe- Valor, Patiotism
Blue stripe- Peace, Justice
Now, if the country is at peace, the blue stripe should be on top of the red stripe.
If the country is at war, the red stripe should be on top because red symbolizes valor.
It's simple yet meaningful imo.

You know, the "old Japanese war flag" is not a war flag at all. It's the flags of their army and navy, with the two flags being nearly identical, just with the sun on the naval flag shifted slightly to the left. They're still in use, by the way.
That symbol literally comes from their religious and cultural background. Amaterasu the first mythical god and it is said to be its godmother of the Japanese emperor was drawn in front of the rising sun representing the land of the rising sun.

Dieppe Raid wasn't a loss though. It specifically was there to test equipment and german defences for D-day planning, there wasn't any follow up planned. If it had somehow "won" and achieved a permanent beachhead on french coast, then it would have been VERY awkward moment in history because like I've already mentioned, no follow up landings or reinforcements were planned and UK had neither people, nor equipment to exploit it.

The story behind the Latvian flag is that a chief fell during battle and he was placed on a white cloth and when he bled out, his blood coloured the cloth red, but the place where his body was stayed white and they later went to a battle with this red-white-red flag (a specific colour of red is used called carmine red.) And the flag firstly is mentioned in the 13th century, making it one if the oldest flags in use today.
