Best fish of 2022 is that incredible mirror Gaz caught. What a fish that was.
I was taught “canal lamping” by an autistic teenager who I took fishing. I was actually out to collect lob worms along the canal towpath one winter and he tagged along. I also took a carp net I was going to use to clear a swim in the weed. I used powerful torches to locate the lobs sticking out onto the path. At some point Kal got bored naturally with the worm hunt and went fish hunting….lamping….whilst I wormed. A while later all excited he asked to borrow the net….said he was going to catch a fish. Dont be daft I said, but let him get on with it. To my amazement 10 minutes later he came back with a bulging net. Sat inside a great plump pike. I was dumbfounded. It wasn’t ill or injured, perfectly healthy too. Until then I thought lights cast on water spooked fish. “ Look Kal don’t know how you did that, it was a total fluke, it will never happen again”….. “No it wasn’t, I will prove it, do it again”. And off he went a second time. I think his autism made him look at things differently. This time it was maybe 20 minutes and he came back sporting a great grin” told you didn’t I, now where’s that money you bet me I couldn’t do it?” There in the net another pristine canal pike. That was no coincidence. Of course I tried it for myself then, discovered the torch picked out the red pike eyes like cats eyes. They strangely they would drift towards the light like a moth to a flame. After a while you could hold the pike as if caught in a “ tractor beam” and cause it to glide straight into the margins above the waiting net. Before long I too had a healthy pike “ lamped” straight into the net.
I was shocked. All these years fishing, believing lights scared fish, now my young apprentice taught the old dog this!! Obviously I kept it quiet for fish security reasons, who wants their canal fish being stolen? There was enough poaching already. But then came Alan’s article, “lamping for carp”, It was out of the bag.
Lamping into the net only seemed to work with pike though, carp eventually moved off. I fed the carp in the canal regularly and got to know individual fish well. I had big perch feed regularly directly in the torchlight too. It was strange at first watching perch devour your worm hookbait fully illuminated. It looks as if my little secret of nighttime fish lamping is now totally blown!!!
