I could cry for what corrupt politicians have allowed to happen to Ireland, and my Irish mother and relatives must be turning in their graves with profound sorrow. I lived in Bray and worked in central Dublin for a short while, about 35 years ago, and spent many wonderful weekends hiking with An Óige and the Irish Mountaineering Club. What a welcoming and safe country Ireland was then, with most people fairly happy. The Irish have always given strangers a warm and generous welcome, but far too many of the wrong kind of people have been let into Ireland (and many other European countries), and they are destroying it.

"Wrong kind".. sure. Unfortunately, Ireland is suffering from a far larger matter. Bringing in Immigrants wasn't the problem, for that was a natural act of humanity. It is and continues to be the real evil that exists to consume and destroy the vulnerable. Those immigrants came from countries that were destroyed by the fore-mentioned evil. The sheer scale of displaced people around the world is truly a sad result of the past, and it has caught up with Europe. It wont end here, I fear.

People are rejecting multiculturalism on mass and not just in western nations - all cultures are starting to reach critical mass and see social friction. People want their own culture and a sense of belonging. Politicians are robbing them of that for the sake of neoliberal economics that depends on perpetual growth and their own inept efforts to achieve it exclusively through more migration.

They can try to shift the blame onto the far-right but security in a society is a major government reponsibility. The ultimate irony is that Varadkars Fine Gael party would have been seen as far-right for a lot of it's history. In fact they are the political descendants of the party that kicked a lot of foreigners out a hundred years ago. Their hero Michael Collins was a man of direct action on the streets of Dublin. They are often referred to as the party of the Blueshirts in Ireland and the debate rages as to how fascist they were. They preside over a wealthy banana republic where corporations and banks rule, the farmers are facing EU climate controls and Irish indigenous people are homeless while new arrivals are accommodated.

I was in Vienna 9 years ago and saw a cannonball embedded in St. Stephen's Cathedral. It's from the turkish invasion of 1683 and was left there to remind them of the moslem invasion. If the Turks only knew that they could have easily invaded Europe with waves of immigrants, they could have saved themselves a lot of trouble. There are countries that can absorb, a diversity of people, the US, Canada, Australia, Russia , Brazil. But small countries like Ireland with no history of profiting from colonial exploitation should not be expected to shoulder this large burden. I'm from the US and live near a large moslem population, mostly from Palestine and Turkey. They're good hardworking people and we can handle them like we've handled all the waves before them. But I'm also Irish, have lots of family who I have visited many times and who have visited me and I would hate to see our history subsumed in the misbegotten legacy of Mary Robinson or even Bono. All I see and hear is people who don't want to compete, many companies are desperately looking for people to fill positions but the lazy bunch want a cozy job which increasingly go to foreigners because those are the people who qualify for it and that is where the bitterness emanates from, the Irish who do seem to want to leave and travel the world.
