  • Rotary plowing a plot with an 853 BCS (13 HP Honda GX390) in first gear (.7 MPH). It's slow work but leaves a pretty usable seed bed. It could be worked finer with a tiller or power harrow. There is a little bit of slope to this plot.

    Yep, just 10" wheels. 12" probably would have been better and we didn't reverse the tread direction since this particular tractor is mostly used for mowing (front PTO) implements. The 13 HP engine is very easy to start. I wouldn't recommend electric start. It's added cost, clutter, and weight. Nothing wrong with it but it is not necessary at all with this engine. Diesels are noticeably harder to pull start and electric start would be more of a consideration for them.

    We broadcast seeded buckwheat into this plot after just this one pass. It germinated well and is flowering like crazy right now. We probably would have run a tiller or a power harrow through it once after plowing if we had been using more of a precision seeder.

      Nice! Is there any hidden flaws of this type of plow? For examle: how it works on wet soil? And how hard is your soil?

    what size wheels 10? is the 13 hard to start .maybe the electric would be a good choice.

    Hey you said you planted buckwheat on a plot like this, how did you do that? what seeding device did you use? Thanks a lot! nice video!

      I honestly can't completely remember (and it's only been year...) but I believe we used a broadcast spreader in this case - the kind you walk with and turn the crank by hand. I've used ATV and other powered mounted broadcast seeders for seeding buckwheat and teff on 10-15 acres but those would have been way overkill for this little plot. Then we lightly raked the soil to get a little more seed-to-soil contact. It germinated and grew very well with all of the rain we had last summer.

    You just keep the right wheel in the furrow and keep going around and around to make the size bed that you want? Also do you ever do this on steeper slopes? And if so how does the rotary plow handle? Does tractor ever slip on slopes?

    • @Civicd15b2b16a
      @Civicd15b2b16a  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, or you can get the two-way version and drive back and forth since it plows in either direction. It does pretty well on slopes but will have a tendency to want to slowly creep downhill if you don't put a little effort into keeping it angled uphill.

      ACGravely thanks. Would bigger tires/wheel weights/ bumper weights help in keeping it from creeping downhill?

      @Civicd15b2b16a  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They might. Generally you can just tap the uphill brake now and then but if it's really steep you wouldn't want to be on the brake all the time, of course. Even with the differential locked they want to creep downhill a little. I'm not sure there is much way to prevent that with the physics of a two-wheeled tractor. It's nothing terrible, though.

    Hi,
    The rotary plow goes deeper than the tiller though, correct?

    • @Civicd15b2b16a
      @Civicd15b2b16a  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Charles Laferrière Yes, the rotary plow reaches much deeper in a single pass than a tiller can.

      The rotary plow is good for that, too. I think there are some other videos on TH-cam demonstrating the bed making capabilities.

      I would say this soil was pretty average other than having a few rocks. It's not soft and loamy nor really hard and compacted. The main drawback is the price (compared to a simple moldboard plow). However it works the soil much finer with one pass so less work is needed before seeding, whereas you probably have to till or harrow after moldboard plowing. It does well in damp soil but I have seen videos of some folks in Europe moldboard plowing when it's practically a swamp. I'm not sure how the rotary plow would perform in very wet soil as I have always avoided soilworking when it is too wet.

    IF COST WERE THE SAME WOULD YOU CHOOSE THE BERTA SWIVELL ROTARY PLOW OVER THE BERTA SINGLE ROTARY PLOW?

    • @Civicd15b2b16a
      @Civicd15b2b16a  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main downside of the swivel version is the extra weight - you might need some counterweights on the front with a gas engine. If both were the same price, I'd still definitely take the swivel (two-way). It's nice for tighter areas and in this instance here with the slope, we could've thrown all of the soil in one direction.

      Hi Evelyn, yes, the tires would work even better for this application if flipped around. However, this machine was predominately used for mowing duties (front-PTO) so they were left in this orientation.
