Making an Oud

  • This video shows many steps in making my first ever oud.
    The construction is loosely based on Richard Hankey's book 'Oud Construction and Repair', which is an excellent resource!
    At the end (11:50) there is also a small sound sample (however, do not expect too much since I do not really know how to play yet ;-)

    The Oud is one of the few instruments from the stringed lute family that has yet to be standardized some five thousand years after we first knew about it (its probably older).
    Each oud maker has their own dimensions and their own methods to make each oud truly sound different.
    Huge respect for this marvelous video.

    • @arsene737
      @arsene737 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, although Turkish ouds come close to being standardized. After Manol redesigned the instrument over 100 years ago, Turkish / Greek / Armenian ouds differ in looks only; the basic construction has remained faithful to Manol's design (and in fact came to be the "Turkish" oud's distinctive feature).

    • @GamerDudester
      @GamerDudester 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@arsene737 In appearance, yes. In internal construction completely different. I visited many Oud makers in Turkey and the dimensions of their bridges and spacing differed greatly. What I do find interesting is that most ouds from one region will tend to aim for a certain sound, and the search for this sound is usually what drives construction. For example the tonality of an Iraqi oud, or the depth of an Iranian oud, are very different from the high-sustain and pitch of Turkish counterparts as example.

    • @mo7.7
      @mo7.7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No one wants standardized ouds tbh, ouds in syria have a type of mold or shape, iraq has different shapes, egypt has a different shape, there was an old Egyptian mold that was big, the bahrain factory produces in several shapes including pear, iraqi, egyptian, didnt see syrian yet tho.
      To me it makes each oud unique and keeps the ouds origins traceable

    Unlike any stringed instrument, the sound of an oud brings up very specific images of desert life.

      Well, depending on the area of Canada you live in, it can either be extremely easy or extremely hard. For example, I live in Alberta, where there's a pretty large presence of Syrian immigrants like myself, and the oud can be a pretty big part of Syrian traditional music
