Oboe reed making with a CNC machine
Something a little bit more exotic today...
I did some first tries playing the oboe a couple of months ago and also started reed making. Due to frustration about dimensions and consistency within a series of reeds, I decided to use my home-made CNC router for reed making.
First experiments, similar to a commercial profiling machine, with an already folded reed were not so successful due to a more or less undefined shape of the tied and folded cane. The cane is way more defined before it is folded, as it then has a well-known inner diameter from gouging (and a quite defined outer diameter from wood selection).
Hence, I made a vacuum fixture from brass (because brass is easy to solder) to hold the unfolded cane during machining and a software to create the reed geometry and G code for the machine to process.
Inquiries about the software can be addressed to reednc (at) posteo.net

A very simple guitar kerfing jig
มุมมอง 4.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Making kerfing has been one of my least favourite tasks. This is just a short video showing the idea for a quite simple jig to make kerfing for guitars and similar instruments. You just need a small router with a base, a 2 mm router bit, a few pieces of plywood, a screw and nut and a drawing of your desired kerfing. After a short practice period, it is possible to make even looking kerfing strips.

Making an Oud
มุมมอง 373K6 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows many steps in making my first ever oud. The construction is loosely based on Richard Hankey's book 'Oud Construction and Repair', which is an excellent resource! At the end (11:50) there is also a small sound sample (however, do not expect too much since I do not really know how to play yet ;-) Camera: Sony FDR-AX53

Making a 7 String Acoustic Guitar
มุมมอง 1.7K8 ปีที่แล้ว
This small foto series shows some impressions on how I made my 7 string acoustic guitar with armrest bevel and combined piezo/microphone pickup. Top wood is spruce, sides and back are indian rosewood, finger board is ebony. The binding of the body was done with mahagony veneer, fingerboard binding is maple. The pickup uses 4 small piezo discs which are glued on the bridge plate and an electret ...

Just imagine musical people that got inspired by war routine. Went through PTSD and almost freed from death fear(and any other), they make masterpieces. Really otherworldly motives but close to us in reality, make you feel that fear and maybe accept it. That how I feel this. Be in the time and place where people can make smh like this and be somewhat popular. And feel senselessness of all violence cuz they feel it and play their music about it.

Really beautiful! Where would I be able to get an oud fingerboard like this? I have an oud that has high action and the fingerboard was removed and then something else was stuck on in place of the fingerboard. I think if I put a new fingerboard on top of it, it will cure my high action. Maybe!

Looks nice and sounds nice! I like that you put the effort to play something authentic for the instrument. Although as you noticed, it can easily be tuned and played like a guitar. Ouds are awesome instruments! I would also like to build one, but am unfortunately a complete amateur in crafting. Might be a waste of wood... What do you think about bridge material? How does heavier wood like ebony compare to light wood for bridges?
