    Technicians with your skills will be in high demand as more of the older lenses are no longer serviced by their OEM. Great work.

      Agreed! It's sad to see Canon consider EF USM lenses like this & my EF 70-200L f4 IS "old" & abandon keeping them in service beyond early 2025.
      And abandon us loyal customers too! I've been one since the mid-80's, far back enough in fact to recall them claim the wonderful new EF mount predicates itself to be forward compatible w/newer technology. I guess pretty much across the line including pro eqpmt they decided it a worthy ditching to see how many of us will jump on the RF bandwagon. I for one am not interested. If it reaches a point due to lack of parts I can't keep my eqpmt going I'll definitely be looking at another brand.
      Meanwhile, since they recently refused to clean the internal fungus from this lens that's otherwise mint, I'm hopeful these videos will assist me getting it back in service myself. The only more serious issue w/mine is it appears the focus group needs cleaned too. 🤞

    Judging by the other comments, this lens seems to be very susceptible to fungus growth between front and focusing lens groups. Fortunately this video made it very easy for me to understand how to simply pop the front off and get at the affected both surfaces to clean them. So thank you, it was very helpful!

    Nice work. Thanks to you, I manage to disassemble mine. One of the plastic slider was broken and caused an Err01. With my 3D printer, I created a new one in less than 5 minutes. Everything works fine now. Let's shoot again. Great tutorial by the way.

    You got lucky with those rear flange screws, every single one on my lens snapped clean off at the head and had to be drilled out and retapped.

      Sometimes that happens if you don't use the perfectly fitting screwdriver. I ordered multiple different ones, and check which fits the best.

      Gelo, where was the fungus sitting? Mine seems to be on the focusing glass after the first big lens block where it normally occurs.

    Hello! First thanks for sharing this video with everyone. The quality of the step by step on how to disassemble the lens is perfect. I would like to clarify a doubt if possible: I have a lens similar to this one and Error 01 appeared. The autofocus is working normally but the lens only works at 2.8 aperture. Which flat cable would I have to change? Do I need to disassemble it to the end? Thank you very much!

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely the aperture cable is broken. You can use this video to fix your lens.

      Hello! Tks for your answer. @@CamerasLensesEtc I bought a new flat cable in China and it is already arriving here in my country. I will soon use the assembly video. I already disassembled the lens and everything worked fine. Thank you very much!!

    Hi, this is great thanks. Would it be very different to the 100mm 2.8L IS USM? Having some IS unit issues.

      I have never repaired the L version of this lens, but my guess would be that the two lenses are very different.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the time you can buy the repair parts on ebay or aliexpress. Also, Canon is selling repair parts for end users, so contact the (3rd-party) Canon repair service if they have and sell the part you need.

    Good job! I’ve got the same lens. But it has a problem with the focusing. The motor goes back and forth every time. Have you any idea what it could be?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would start with cleaning the focus strip. I have a video about repairing the same problem on a Canon 17-85mm lens... check that video.

    Hi! I’ve successfully disassembled and reassembled this lens (I had fungus) thanks to you. Thanks ! But since I’ve did it, the aperture won’t work anymore... looks like it’s stuck at f32 but it’s not showing on my dslr. Any idea about where it could come from ? Thanks

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Disassemble the lens, and check if you can open and close the aperture manually, if yes, then check the conductivity of the cable, if it is fine, then clean the contacts with scratch pen.

    I bought this lens on ebay, and it has signs of mold on the focusing lens (of which you speak at min 13:00 ), when I take a macro mode photo, it comes out with these small dots that ruin the picture. I've tried to find this spare but i couldnt find it, do you know where i can buy it? Regards from Chile

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is not on ebay or aliexpress, then most likely you can't buy it. Maybe buying a same, broken lens which has the same problem then replacing the lens element (then selling the broken lens) would be a possible solution.

    Hi! Is it necessary to do tuning and/or calibration of this lens after replacement of aperture block?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The aperture block doesn't contain any lens element(s), so there is no need to calibrate the lens. (Just mark the eccentric screws at disassembly, and assemble it at the same position.)

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check ebay or aliexpress. Alternatively, you can contact your local lens service center, usually they sell Canon repair parts if the lens is still in production.

    Hello, first of all thank you very much for your great videos !
    I managed to disassemble the aperture units. Once disassembled, should the aperture units be fully closed (F32) when operated by hand ? On mine it blocks before. Not a bent aperture blade.
    I don't know if it's the aperture units or the flat cable that's knocked out.
    Any opinion on it?
    Thanks in advance

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if the aperture unit is completely closed, there is a small hole in the middle.
      I would recommend to check the conductivity of the flat cable with a multimeter.

    Lets say that the rear element has fungus, is it accesible for cleaning by following these steps?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you follow the video, you will have access to all the lens elements.
      I think you just need to remove the rear cover, PCB, and the cover behind the PCB, then you can remove the screws from the rear lens, then you can remove the rear lens.
