This just hit me like a ton of bricks! 💔 7 1/2 years ago as I sat in the recliner next to the hospital bed where my husband laid in our living room, he was on Hospice home care and he would be asleep but talking about his childhood on this old farm, talking to His parents who had long been gone. 😭😭😭 The day before he passed away he told me "I wish I could box you all up and take you with me". I miss him terribly 😔

This song has always stuck with me for some reason. It sounds upbeat and like a strole down memory lane, except that it's al framed by this story of a good cemaratine saving a man from freezing to death and the old man being mad about it. The emphasis on the last "Man, i wish you'd left me alone" really lets you feel how ready this old man was to die and he felt robbed of it.

  • @mikeholton9876

Craig Morgan just gave you a masters level class in country music as it is based in telling a story, he told a story about someone telling a story. at the same time he gave that poor guy that was sleeping homeless on the street his humanity.
the lesson in this Homily is in the brilliant way the "old homeless guy's" memories reminds us that people are not always born into the situations they end up in, and even though the man was in that happy place in his dreams, he still needed to try to help him.
Craig Morgan was sadly a singer that was overlooked more than he should have been. he's a brilliant artist.

  • @velvanae
    @velvanae 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I would also like to say that I think it is also about " Hey I was almost home in my dreams and not homeless, I was not thinking about my situation but about the warmth and love and carefree life I had and you pulled me back into reality" My wife witnessed both her parents passing, she said there was happiness and calmness about them, so it was also as if the old man was saying "if I died, so be it, but I was happy and calm and would see my mom and dad again" I don't really see it so much as a sad song other than being in that situation in the first place.

I have a slightly different take on this song. Your take is that he was dreaming of better times, my take is that he wanted to die and be home again. I understand it from this point of view because every day I get closer to that myself. When your parents are gone and life has changed so much from the happier days of childhood, and in this man's situation of homelessness in the present while remembering the life he had as a child, it's fairly common to look forward to leaving the misery of life behind.
As for myself, I grew up in a small town. We lived on a dirt road with 2 houses on it and you could count the cars that drove by for the entire day on one hand. Today there is 20 houses on that road and 2 subdivisions that attach to it. The road is named after my grandfather who was the first to build on it and is only a half mile long. Huge change in only 50 years lol. So you can see why someone may just wish to escape today's world and go home. My home is gone and will never come back again and some days it's all I can do to get out of bed and face a thousand cars on my 10 mile drive to work while remembering the days when I could make the same drive and not see a single car. Yeah, I can see the old man's point real well.
You also said you were glad he was saved, but I have to ask "was he really saved?" Yes his life was saved, but when your life is so hard that you really hope to die is keeping him from dying really saving him? I used to think so, but that is fading away and I'm getting closer to believing that keeping someone alive in certain instances like this is more cruel than kind.

Putting labels on music is like putting labels on people, it's what's on the inside that count. All I care about is good or bad, do I like it or not. When it comes to music, it's either good or bad. I'm sure there are some Hip hop or Rap songs you don't like. Doesn't mean you don't like Hip Hop or Rap. I like classic rock and country, but I'll listen to Hip Hop and Rap if I like the song.
Craig Morgan has several songs that will make you think. As others have said, This Ain't Nothing is one of those songs. He also has some that are light-hearted, Redneck Yacht Club and International Harvester.
I enjoy your reactions. You're one of the few that actually listens to the songs and breaks down the lyrics. Keep up the good work.

My brother, from another mother !
I won't say a word bout you like a little country music.
We all need to open our minds, and explore. We true music lovers know. Either it's there for you or it's not. If you can't or don't feel music, you will not hear the message the soul the meaning the depth, the chills thar some songs bring to fruition. We need to turn off the TV, and listen to more music. Without narrow minds, limiting ourselves to a certain type of music.
I am 56, white born and raised Lexington KY.
And since I was a kid, MOTOWN was always my favorite jam.
But, I am well versed in about every type of music.
I am a fan of yours, you have a great style and your very intelligent. Love to see your reactions, and you speak for a lot of people. Keep it up, my young brother !
Keep bringing us together regardless of stereotypes, classes, race, politics and religion.
And believe me, you are doing just that with your brilliance, understanding and love of people and music.
Keep fighting the good fight !

brother, love it. first time I heard this one I was driving, the imagery was so beautiful and profound that I could not see the road through the tears. Every line from the old mans retort painted a living mosaic of some of the happiest times in my life... and a stoic realization of just how easy it is to leave or loose it. I felt for the countless millions the world over who were there right now... almost home where things were good, right and joyous. thank you Sir!

I completely admire your thirst for new things. I feel though, that no matter how hard you want to "get" these songs, and the words, you can never truly know what it means unless you lived it. By that I mean a lot of us who love country music love it because it takes us back to our childhoods growing up in small towns and the country. Unless you have swam in a cool mountain steam on a hot summer day, drip dry on the bank stariing up at the sky.. you don't know how beautiful these things are. So simple, yet so awesome. Running through a field, or the smell of freshly cut hay.. oh my. In the same sense, I don't know what it was like growing up in a city. I am sure there are things that take you back to your childhood in the city. I don't understand it, but it brings smiles to your face. Same thing with country music. It brings smiles to our souls because we lived it, and most probably really really miss back then. Craig Morgan has some beautiful music.. I am glad you like him.

My dad passed away Dec 9th from COVID after being in the hospital since Halloween night. Yesterday, Dec 22nd, was when we laid him to rest with full military honors.
This song has been a fave since I first heard it on the radio, but it made me think what my dad's "Almost Home" was. Well, it took me back to just before I called the ambulance to get him. I called them because my dad was having hallucinations and he was talking things that didn't make sense. For instance, he said we lived somewhere we never did, we've lived in the same place for 46 years. My mom asked him, "Where is your home?" He then pointed at her and said, "My home is with YOU." Not only was it real sweet and sincere, but that was something dad never did, publicly display affection. He loved my mom more than he would ever say, but he often did things to show is affection, because he thought people threw around words like "I love you" with such reckless abandon they lose any meaning.
So back to the song and how it relates, I wonder what "Almost Home" was to my dad. My dad served in the Navy from 1961-65, being stationed in San Francisco, Seattle, and Hawaii. He didn't talk about his military life much, but he did talk about Hawaii, and how if you stayed away from the tourist traps it was as close, as he could conceive, to be heaven. Looking at pictures of Hawaii he took, I can see why. Also taking a look at his pictures from when he was a kid, living on a farm with his 6 siblings, building race carts, fishing, trapping, and hunting, I wondered if that was "Almost Home" for him too. Then I saw pictures of me sitting on his lap, or in his arms, as he read to me, and other pictures with my siblings, and his grandkids, and I wondered if that was "Almost Home" to him too.
He went through so many ups and downs in the hospital, and almost all of it was under sedation or medically induced coma. So I hope that while he was sedated and comfortable, whatever home or all the homes he preferred, was where he was, that he was "Almost Home" in all of them. To exist in a dream or memory that is so real, so comforting, that you just don't want to be woke up and to live in it to the hilt, I hope that is what my dad went through till the good Lord called him Home. To think how much peace and joy he'd have puts me at ease, even though his funeral was only yesterday. It still doesn't feel like he's gone. We see his "ghost" around every corner, every place we'd find him relaxing in this house, but right now we are getting used to the idea that dad is Home enjoying the best times with the best people he knew and loved that passed before him.

The smell of a field that has just been freshy cut.. Wow!! that brings back memories. If you ever have a chance to spend some time on a farm and work in the fields and with the animals, yeah I know all of the smells aren't always enjoyable ones but, there's just something about being on a farm and experiencing it... I wish everyone could experience that feeling. You really don't can't understand farmers until you've experienced their life. God Bless all the farmers and country folk out there. I know city folk like to talk it up and take credit for almost everything, but Farmers and Country folk, You really are what this country is all about

This is something that I have never understood . Believers, stating well it's a good day I woke up on this side of the grass. Or like you said" I'm glad he saved him. "
A woman that is aged out and is on the downhill side of life I totally get this song and I hope when I have my dream of going home that no one wakes me.
I am not suicidal by any means but I have a real understanding of this thing called life. From the moment we breathe our first breath after being born, we are destined to die at some point. If we believe in a higher power we should understand that when the body starts to give out and you feel you are no longer serving a real purpose, other than saving your loved ones some sadness, the dream of going to a better place should be a totally natural thing. That is the end goal isn't it.
If you are not a believer and are correct in your thoughts, then it's just over and you won't know better anyway.
So as I see it, those who fear to face death are those who are a little unsure of what they believe. That's fine with me , but don't be grudge and older person in pain for wanting to have their journey over.
I don't mean this to be morbid I just have always seen it as a natural part of the cycle of life.

I first heard this song on the radio years and years ago and burst out in tears. I can’t help but cry when I hear it still. It’s so touching. I haven’t been thru your whole video repertoire but “He stopped Loving Her today” by George Jones is another touching song.

My mother always told me that the people you hang around with are a reflection of who you are. So, if they’re your friends, they have to be good people. So it wouldn’t surprise me, once they hear the music, they’d like country music as well.
