Just finished the whole series. Excellent! Director claimed they were trying a different approach to wuxia involving financial strategies along with the typical martial arts scenarios. Very fascinating mix and the hero has a very interesting character arc, as do other characters in the story. Well worth watching and judging for yourself. Further, "ingenious", as some have already pointed out, doesn't necessarily mean "genius," but more along the lines of clever. And our protagonist, while clever, does admit that he relies on "luck" for his plots to work and sometimes they do and sometimes they don't but he is skilled at making "lemonade out of lemons" and that's one of the joys of this story. My two cents.
WHY WHY are people thinking they are getting a second 'Mei Changsu' here or comparing this to 'NIF' ??😮 What made you think that ? I never ever thought this was going to be about a brilliant strategist for a millisecond ! It's a totally different premise ... 'Ingenious' doesn't mean the person is a 'genius' It's more that they are inventive or original. Using different thoughts, ideas & schemes to overcome things which forgive me, but in what I've watched so far, the ML does just that! (sometimes with a bit of luck) The title I think is misleading. People seem to think he's going to be this super intelligent super human! No just a man with normal failings! ... Also PLEASE make your own mind up about a drama ... I see people saying 'Oh I won't watch it now then' & I'm like 'SMH' Really!? ... If you were before this at least watch it for 2 or 3 eps & if you find it’s 'not your thing' then fair enough! Remember whilst I really appreciate Avenue X's POV on dramas & her knowledge on the industry is interesting, her reviews are just that ...'Her views' & are at times very personal ... I always decide for myself I sometimes enjoy a drama she's basically trashed & conversely hated/overall disliked a drama she's loved/is obsessed about ... (Guardian prime example) So far I very much enjoyed this drama for the interactions cinematography stories etc ... Yes a few flaws but ... so far I'm happy ... Happier than when I've watched some of the very v average 'fluffy' drama/rom-com's released lately which many here have 'loved'! If you’re enjoying a drama don’t let a review spoil your enjoyment You’re not wrong to do so! That's life in C Drama Land! Take care😊

@@funnybunny3823 The title is a big part of the problem as some viewers do not understand the real meaning of 'Ingenious' clever yes a schemer yes but not Sherlock or MC! ...They should have given it an alternate title. Yes MC in NIF had a v different & extraordinary life He already had his answers & was laying the path to reveal those truths with the help of his allies & friends to exact revenge ... YX is still searching for the answers to those tragedies with the people he meets along the way & then hopefully to receive justice ... In comparison he is just a fairly 'normal' man It's like comparing apples & oranges! ... Have a great day😊
I love clever plots and although I agree with many points mentioned by AvX(better side characters, the sudden romance, the not so ingenious ML) I still find this drama pretty good and very watchable. The only downside of it is in those scenes where it’s just conversations, the pacing gets too slow. Imagine 2 ppl talking and nothing happens and super slow talk 🤣. BUT besides that, I’m still interested to know how the plot unfolds and still trust the ML to uncover the truth. Actually if he’s super intelligent all the time, making no mistakes, I think some viewers would then criticize him for being too perfect eh?

I can't stop picturing Mao as Chang Ru saying "Li Wieyeung!" with that sinister smile on her face. It brings me laughs inside all day long
I suspected that the drama's title was ironic from the trailers - for example the moment the ML jumps from a roof and lands in the FL's arms. It seems obvious to me - and the character actually admits it at one point - luck plays a major role in the success of his plans. And how serious is a mastermind whose only martial arts skill is moving fast? I understand your disappointment if you expected Mei Changsu 2 but I'm happy with the drama. The writing is not strong but the set design is pleasing to the eye and I can always watch Chen Xiao.
That’s the reason i simply skip the stupid parts of the drama & just enjoy chen xiao’s acting.
Finally you just put exactly what's on my mind during watching this drama. I've been anticipated this drama because I like Chen Xiao and also love the supporting cast. In my opinion, Yunxiang is not typical the holy mighty good smart person like Mei Chang Su and that makes Yunxiang more interesting to watch. I just wish the writer would tone down and even make the romance ZERO because that's mostly the weakest and annoying part of this drama. So unbeliveable. Despite all the weak parts, Chen Xiao is still doing great as Yunxiang, so far chinese audiences always praise him and the supporting cast too.
Thank you so much for this review. I have been watching this series in the US with English subtitles and wondered if inadequate translation was why I was skipping through so much of it from boredom and/or confusion. I too couldn't understand why the lead was supposed to be "ingenious". I too was looking more for a Mei Chiangsu-like brilliant strategist who is almost prescient in being prepared for all exigencies even though he lacks martial arts skills. Even more annoying because you don't really know WHY he is set out for revenge. Thank you for showing me that I'm not an idiot in not appreciating what was such a widely touted series.
absolutely! it had so so much potential but i really lost interested when i started seeing all these gaps and 1 dimensionality of the main characters so far .

Aren't most of these plot criticisms coming from your expectations? I went in blind without having watched any trailers and I never got the impression I was supposed to think the main character is THAT smart, I enjoyed that this guy who can't fight is slightly out of his element and gets into danger sometimes rather than being an anime mastermind.
Bruh the title literally has the word ingenious. Maybe they should have titled it The Above Average Intelligence One.

now that i've watched it, i lost interest in it in the middle of drama. Drama is not good but quite watchable ,however it lost its main plot n got dragged too long
Yeah agree with the 1st ep, as a jenious man would never do that. I also in shocked, but i think the drama wants to present as a light wuxia drama with comedy and romance, not a serious proper politic drama like Nirvana in Fire.
As for comparison with Mei Chang Shu, Mei Chang Shu prepared 13 years with a knowledge of whole situation and plot in royal, while different with Yun Xiang, small kids from small village, and brought to Yun Tai, study strategic, wisdom and gambling, he might only got little news about Nandu. No google back then right. So we can't compare Mei Chang Shu and Yun Xiang apple to apple. But the script level indeed in different level.
And I think it is not fully adapted from the novel. In the novel the background of Luo Wen Jia is a scholar and has a wife, until he was accused of doing something, being captured and tortured and met Yun Tai leader, and then he proposed to become his son Yun Xiang. So the story also different.
It is my 2 cent of this drama, but it is loveable with terrific cinematography and beautiful talented actors.

Second roles are really soooo good
"The love you give me", this far, it's providing the most embarrasing and ridiculous scenes of dramaland 2023. A 4 old boy with a severe heart disease wandering around alone, even right after a major surgery, saying the lines of a manipulator granmother... A kindergarten deliverying the boy to an stranger guy that claims to know the kid... it's just unbearble to watch.
But it’s sweet and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it

It's not my cup of tea but from a friend who watched it's a cute and fun sweet romance drama with pretty faces, nice to have after a hard day at work that's why it's popular, and the two main actors have worked as a couple for three times so they have great understanding and chemistry with each other. For this kind of sweet romance dramas normally people don't analyze it too deeply and just went along with the sugary sweet moments

@@fatisummer9106 Not even though, there are almost non kissing scenes so far. The leads have indeed great chemistry, but the sriptwriters made a huge nonsense.

@@maybenot5074 Not really. It's because so many quibbles that Chinese audiences might find off-putting are completely lost on international viewers, i.e. those who rely on subtitles. These viewers, who were thus far enjoying this drama, and all the delights of the production values and of course Xiao Chen's many charms are immediately drawn out of their experience and told that what they are enjoying is wrong-headed. This is not, I submit, helpful for anyone on any side of the production, the actors, or this segment of the viewership.

And not to mention the manager of the gambling house who decided to burn the paperwork that would get her out of the outcast rank after all that efforts. It makes no sense at all. Even if the guy does not mind, the law at the time will not permit them to marry each other. She can’t even be his concubine never mind his legally wedded wife. It gets more ridiculous as it progress. Iqiyi is losing their touch.

I like it, although I agree that the ML is really not as clever as the trailers would have us believe. I think it's a reasonable, middle range drama.
I like this series and never attempted to compare the ML with Mei Changsu. Nirvana in Fire is a typical Game of Thrones style drama while The Ingenious One is another typical revenge styled drama. Nothing new.
The Ingenious One has a lower budget compared to NIF which is unfortunate. Otherwise, it would have been better.
Both Hu Ge and Chen Xiao are excellent actors.
Chen Xiao- I just want to see Yun Xiang's scenes in this series.
I watch this series because Rachel Momo's acting caught my attention. She stands out in this series. In fact, I thought she was amazing from the moment I saw her performance in Episode 1.
The romantic plot between Yun Xiang and Shu Ya Nan is redundant and so much time is wasted on the romantic plots. Which is a waste of money and time for this drama.
Other than that, this drama is worth watching.

I really wanted to like it because I like Chen Xiao but I just couldn’t bring my self to continue watching.
I think the story is more like a comedy, so there's no comparison to Nirvana at all. I was surprised to see Chen Xiao playing a funny character who always finds himself in an awkward situation and saves himself/ gets saved at the very last moment.The actor did a good job imo. Only one can't expect of him being a Sherlock Holmes or Lin Shu, though he's smart-ish :) The script is meh indeed, this is the general issue with so many dramas of these days. Pity.
Cause cdramas PDs or scriptwriters are formulaic (greed)

omg... I really feel sorry for the production team but yeah... I only dropped off it just bc its ok-ish aesthetic and not so impressive fighting choreo, esp it was directly after watching Pledge of Allegiance. You know, it's inevitable to compare those two. I actually wanted to pick it up again, but after I watch this review, I must reconsider it... meanwhile, I enjoy watching Back from the Brink and I asked myself, what's my standard!!! 😅

The Kou Yuanji character was brilliant and should play the villian in Nirvana in Fire 2. It will surely make NIF2 on top of my favorite list. He is one of the most despicable character I've ever saw in a chinese drama. Anyway, watch it till the end. It was suprisingly satisfying in my opinion.
Pick it back up and watch through ep. 19. That episode is great. Also, maybe you haven't had the misforune to be kidnapped or suffered abuse, but this series deals with this and how those who didn't prevent it deal with their guilt.
The reason why you are disappointed with this drama is because you are comparing it with Nirvana in fire. If you go in with no expectation then you will be okay

I dont watch trailers or read books( if drama is based on a book), so i dont have any expectations at all before watching it. All i want is a series that are all-connected and no abrupt scenes( i find those came from bad editing) that just appear out of nowhere. I can tolerate long dialogue,and few movements. Those wont mar my viewing pleasure.
I find many chinese dramas with titles so ridiculous,or so funny, or so plain or so lazy to think of a title( think of the many dramas that have PRINCESS in the titles), that i ignore the english title but rely more on its chinese titles. So ,again,no expectations there.
Since he had lived in the mountains at a young age, still he is a man who can appreciate a beauty when he sees one. So,he can flirt,but of course, he is just an ordinary man who gets attracted to the opposite sex. If he plays a monk who removes all bodily desires and still get attracted to pretty ladies,then, that does not go well with his character. So, i'm ok with the male lead trying to vie some attention from the female lead.
I think i will continue to watch to know how it will end. I only discontinue if its too stupid to view or the storyline doesnt make sense

i think this is one that i kept trying to watch and just kept stopping and starting and just gave up on. I can't remember the exact reason, but i finally just told myself to knit a sock and let this one go. so annoying.
I recognize Xia Ke sabre guy from one Three Kingdoms dramas and last year's "Heroes". A real actor, as far as I'm concerned.
I don't get Chen Xiao's looks. I remember MXT from "Love O2O" and maybe a couple dramas from around the same time. In this drama, something with shape of her eyes makes me think facelift.
I would think that ML's entire clan getting wiped out would make him more conscientious about minimizing loss of innocent lives while carrying out his plans, but nope. Some say that he is (again) one of those cold, unfeeling, self-involved people who will slowly learn how to be more compassionate. First, the secret sect that raised and educated him didn't do a very good job. Second, cold, unfeeling and self-involved don't seem to go with the desire for revenge. What can one get out of it?
My problem with The Ingenious One is that I can't even get into it. It is totally failing to hook me. I struggle to finish each episode so I've only made it to ep8 and still haven't found anything that interesting yet.
I personally am enjoying the show.
After 18 episodes, I had to pause because I was so torn between the ML being portrayed as a likeable character, that I wanted to be safe and him being this insufferable twit who thinks he can control/manipulate everything and everyone, but this level of self-confidence is totally unfounded.
It’s by pure luck no other important character has yet died by his stupidity.

Can he control a falling log in a burning house?
Can he control that an evil person suddenly decides no to spend money for the assassination of a character he had tricked into loosing her internal strength?
Can he control the fate of a whole guild after incapacitating their leader and protector?
Any halfway intelligent person would realize that they put their own revenge (btw, how about something else as character motivation, once in a while, iQiYi?) above the lives of all those around them and would at least have *some* self-doubts.
I really hope the second half shows him getting his comeuppance for his arrogance. (As opposed to other people paying for it)
I enjoyed much and evaluated worth watcing. I love every his blink. In Chinese drama world, revenge means a lot, but protagonist pursued truth rather than bloody revenge, let foes go and redeemed owing results. he is ingenious.
I paid for the VIP subscription just to watch this drama. And immediately regretted it. I have not been able to watch a single episode in a single sitting. Now I am scrolling through the iqiyi platform looking for dramas just so I can get my money's worth. Any suggestions, anyone?

Yes, this was a big disappointment. The actors are capable, and the cinematography is adventurous... But the writing is dull, and the two lead characters are just types, no depth to them. Nothing to keep me wanting to watch. I gave up, and went back to re-watch 'Nirvana in Fire'.
I shall be so sad when 'Oh, no! Here comes Trouble' finishes airing...

Watch it, Watch it! She is a Brilliant actress I loved her in "Love 020". She was Brilliant in that too....he's brilliant also.

Honestly, I love the ML after a wonderful performance in dream of splendor but I can’t get pass the first episode of this one..not gonna lie, I remember mei changsu when they introduced his character. But i guess its not..
I concede that you are very knowledgeable in many technical aspects in the art of film-making, but I do find that you are often swayed by your pet peeves, often superficial, in making premature judgements on any drama. Things like background music, dubbed dialogue, and in this particular case, a hero who doesn't meet your expectations as "an ingenious one" like Mei Changsu (right from epi 1), straightaway leads you to brand this drama as "unwatchable". Whilst you may have caveat that we may not share the same opinion, you have to accept that many of us, including me, still value your judgement, and in this regard, based on your review, could have just given this drama a miss. And though I admit that your critique of those items that you have brought up, if done properly, would add to the enjoyment of the drama, they are by no means the sole criteria by which a drama should be judged. I think the most important aspect is the storyline, and its ability to entertain. In this regard, I think you owe it to your viewers to at least see through the whole drama before you give your judgement, rather than dismiss it because of some personal "irritant" or of certain technical aspects that do not meet your high expectations. While we certainly appreciate your input, which are great learning points to further enjoy our dramas, I would have to disagree with your assessment and say that I am enjoying this drama and its storyline, the good cast and the cinematography.
I would say it is good when they stay within the period, but the last half episodes got worse, so she made the right decision. I liked the main characters more. But being lucky is not that bad because no one can calculate what will exactly happen. The thing is to always put yourself in the best position and on average, you can come out ahead more often. Almost no superstar athlete always wins every point. Yes, some things did not make sense like her examples, but the protagonist could move very fast, so he could still have escaped on his own and may have pretended to need the heroine’s help.

Presumptuously counting myself among people with "high standards for clever plots", actually I find the plot of this drama... intellectually engaging, thing that I like, beside liking in general wuxia poiesis & aesthetics (for which a good part of international audience and artists, in particular Westerners, like Q. Tarantino, developed a true fetish: heroes facing tough choices in a tough world in which it's hard to distinguish good from evil, right from wrong and the pace of struggles regularly conveys smell of rain /or snow/, blood and dust, an emotion we cannot realisticy sense but somehow we do) this drama certainly contains. While agreeing with your critics, I will argue hereafter the reasons why I think you've underrated this drama (disclaimer: to this point), deserving our (and yours) further time and attention.
1. Many C-dramas have bad, wrong or unrelated titles (including Nirvana in Fire), lets' pretend the title is "In Search of Truth", because it is its Leitmotiv or, if we are to focus on the ML, the title "The Scheme-Master Seeking the Truth", because scheming is the main skill ML developed during his Yun-sect apprenticeship. Whether these schemings are realistic enough to be perceived as "ingenious" or not is of secondary importance, I find many things in Sheakespeare's dramas completely unrealistic (The Tempest is my favorite, and its title only marginally relates to what is the drama plot about to tell), but these things never impacted my (and general) impression we read or watch a true art.
2. You are wrong to compare this drama to NiF, because the two dramas do not belong to the same set, and according to what we all have learned in primary school mathematics, we should always distinguish the sets and never compare different sets. NiF belongs to "inverted criminal story" also known as a "howcatchem": the audience knows from the very beginning (or starting episodes) that the Chiyan (Lin) army was set up, they were unguilty of the crime of treason, i.e. of the guilt which was functional to the "high powers" and the Emperor's paranoia who tried to block revealing the truth in every possible way. All Mei Changsu's efforts are directed to REVEAL the truth, which we (the audience) all know, more or less. This type of narrative largely differs from a classical "sherlock-holmes" find-the-criminal with your wits" (and this is how investigators actually are to find the criminal, in real world, even today, anywhere in the world) and if you must compare the same sets, maybe, The Ancient Detective you have praized (and I've seen thanxs to your recommendation) is better. My point here is: it's easier to write an "inverted criminal story" and get the popularility: the most watched (and the most winning awards) detective-drama of all times is (Lt.) Columbo series (11 seasons!) than the truth-revealing story.
3. You (and some other fellow-followers of your channel) are completely right about the FL: it would have helped if the audience could relate to her in the same way as we relate to the ML. Chen Xiao is indeed Chinese "Johnny Depp"), but the great fault here is not to reveal the FL, her conflicted feelings/thoughts as it was the case of the ML (whose thoughts, we relaten with= are revealed through flashbacks).

We obviously didn't see the same drama. Except for the acknowledgment that all the supporting actors are great, I don't agree with much of anything in this review. It's a shitty review of a great drama.
I am enjoying the drama for the ppsitive reasons you listed, but can clearly see the flaws too. I'd never seen Rachel Momo work before, but thought she was a proper actress. She is not impressing me though. And let's not even talk about the romance, ugh
I did not bother with Ingenious One since Nirvana In Fire is probably still much better. Instead, I watched Grandma's New World which has many interesting small stories with length of 1 episode or 2 episodes.

It's goldmine/landmine for me, the FL is not convincing for me, her acting feels very expressionless lol, the best thing about this drama is the production and cinematography
agree, she's the main problem to me, she looks too modern and she has no chemistry with ChenXiao at all despite already 3 times working with him. I just wish they dont have any relationship at all.

I finish watching all 36 episodes ....yun xiang character is really a slap to the face of many men. In every fighting scene he will hide behind his girl friend. I wondering why the script writer portray yun xiang in such a bad shape? If he is not a tip top martial artiste at least he able to use his wits to fight back and defend himself. Such a loser indeed...his famous catch phrase .....YES OR MAYBE NO.....I really feel want to punch his face with this kind of answer. He is merely taking his partner like a fool.

just finished ep. 28 and for several episodes he is now permanently drunk and cannot get over the split up, stumbling around but still plotting. It is embarrassing, he needs professional help with his drinking problem. Maybe joining the AA. Absolutely boring.
No, I’ve watched till Ep 28 too and he’s still solving problems, still on track with his revenge plot and uncovering the truth. Being drunk doesn’t affect him at all nor make him useless. Besides, I have a feeling he’s faking it.

GUYS, SHE 'S NOT WRONG. I honestly thought why she gives much Negatives for dramas but then i realized what's wrong with the drama in the middle of it while watching the drama . She has Honest Reviews , Great insights and thankful Warnings ahead to NOT WASTE OUR TIME FOR THAT DRAMA. Maybe this drama is not for anyone but the plot is ok and the acting is good enough but the problem is you'll feel like it's getting lost its plot and dragging you along with the drama for long. At last, you might lose interests in it n end up skipping a lot even after you've watched. AT THIS POINT, the TH-camr deserves a lot more followers than right now. Because unlike the famous youtubers who only post new drama n some ratings.. reviews, she's much more worth to follow! BEEN HER FAN FOR SOME TIME but this is my first Long Honest Review
I think you saying Song Weilad is a terrible actor is way over the top! I like him in a League of Nobleman a lot and others. You are going to be doing great damage to people's careers and the series and movies they are in. Serously, back up and watch what you say!

Nirvana in fire is completely a joke show. Nothing special. Rise of phoniex is the best to compare with ingenious one.
despite its flaws, i found the interactions between the two leads to be quite engaging. they're very cute together plus the supporting characters are all very fleshed out. the cineatography is quite good as well.chen xiao's character compared to mei changsu has more funny moments
lets not even compare both of them. Chen xiao's character has nothing going on for him to be a "genius". Mei changsu is faaaar superior in all ways
lets say this ingenious one are so sloppy n coincidentally always lucky..hmm? coz most acts are ridiculous n did he need a romance at an early point of his journey? but again selling romance for d audiences, his serious mission aside n enjoy love life..hmmm, but what i enjoy most are the butler and big sis romance n mysterious silent understanding only with little eyes n body subtle gestures, they are the most interesting love story and very well acted in this drama.. so yeah another wuxia disappointment..
