- [S7 E02] Black Stone, Neoliberalism, and the Housing Crisis
David Harvey examines the relationship between wage repression, rising housing costs, and homelessness, presenting a stark critique of capitalist systems that prioritize speculative profits over meeting basic housing needs. He explores how inflation in housing markets, driven by financial speculation and companies like Blackstone, exacerbates economic inequality. Harvey critiques the Democratic Party’s failure to propose robust housing policies that address the needs of the 50% of Americans living on $30,000-$40,000 annually, emphasizing the irrationality of empty homes coexisting with widespread homelessness.
He advocates for housing as a non-speculative, accessible resource, suggesting municipal and cooperative housing initiatives instead of supporting profit-driven developers. Harvey calls for a reversal of neoliberal wage repression policies established since the 1980s, arguing that addressing wage inequality is critical to solving housing and inflation crises. He concludes by highlighting the lack of political will to address these systemic issues, noting that speculative housing markets and inadequate policies fuel inequality and social instability.

Stay in good health, David, and thanks for the insightful analysis!
A privilege to watch you online. Have a good day, David
Thank you so much, Prof. Harvey. It is such an honor to listen to your insights. I wish more people knew about your analysis and theory.
So much deeper than the NIMBY / YIMBY drawl that we are subjected to in mainstream discussions on housing. Thank you.
Excellent explanation of the economics of modern housing and commercial property. More people should tune in.
Enlightening podcast on one of the main sources of inflation and poverty. Thank you Harvey sharing your ideas with us.
Thanks for giving these talks!
For a long time Black Stone was calling me, nearly every day. It took several years before I could understand who was calling me, and why they were calling me.
Greetings from Colombia. Thanks for this podcast.
greetings from Brazil. Thank you for this discussion!
I have arrived a little late, but good to listen to you. My best wishes for you. I read you in Spanish language in Akal. Thank you about all your works about marx and marxism
Glad to hear from you again. Down with Capitalism!
Great video
Yes Blackstone owns lots of housing and it costs citizens 40-60% of earnings to rent. Tell us more about the guy in the beard at the back. Love that guy.
You make so much sense. If the Biden/Harris administration had done as you suggest, they might have earned the support they needed to squeak in a victory against Trump despite the horrific genocide in Gaza.
Loving the sweater vest, as usual
David's analysis is easily turned into policy positions to inundate local and state governments with and to share as commentary. Change can happen from the bottom up. There's a lot of power within local, regional, and state political organs.
At these scales, virtually everyone wants people housed and working.
My mother lost her house under such conditions.
You'd think the OCGFC would want us rabble more comfortable.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Sir, great proposal ! However, American economy already became Growth by rent seeking. Government supplyed low rent house will reduce rent level, which means low GDP growth or negitive growth. House owners will not allow it, and Trump will reject it.
The life is very old
Religion is very old civilization which continue upto today
Listen song,circle of life
All looks like the Heavy Duty Chronicles to me while your playing the anti capitalism character 🤣
You and what army will make this happen?
The Mario brothers and all their friends.
@someonenotnoone I heard they were throwing Mario's brother underneath the dungeon. Hope I'm wrong.
Well you certainly wont be in it will you. Small mindedness is what got us where we are
