Sam, just because you wouldn't have something, doesnt mean everyone else wouldn't... as someone who's restored a 1996 LS400, it isn't about the money or worrying about the logic of having a 'concourse car', its about the enjoyment and challenge of the process and connecting with the car. Considering you bottled your Abarth build, its pretty easy to see why you don't get it.
No need to get personal, haha. The point I was trying to make is are we going to see more nut & bolt restorations of “cheap” cars as we keep turning our heads on new cars… and is it worth it on £5-10k cars if the work costs 2-3 times that amount. A personal “project car” is very different… the 205 we were discussing was not a personal project… it had been done by an independent company and was for sale for BIG money…
I appreciate the insights that Sam and Tony bring to car culture, but it seems they may have a more limited perspective regarding the broader context, both within their country and globally. While I enjoy their content and admire their passion for cars, there are moments when I feel they could benefit from a deeper understanding of the diverse interests and enjoyment that many individuals find within the automotive community.
@@BehindTheGlass I was merely giving an example from your personal history to give context as to why you may not get it. It might not make sense to you, but clearly there is a market for it if there are enough examples for sale. Also buying and restoring such cars is still way cheaper than buying your average car these days as everything is incredibly expensive, so I can see the appeal on that front. Long term, it could be worth the gamble! Nice to you see you replying to comments though, new years resolution ;)

There was a Ferrari 412 at the Southside Hustle car meet in Wimbledon last month. The design seems to have come of age recently and it looked really nice. It also actually looked quite small compared to modern stuff.
HNY. Nice to see the excitement for the new year. How about for one of your episodes you bring your better halves and ask them questions about how they feel about you guys being car guys. I think that would be an interesting episode.
A possibly interesting point with the McLaren Senna, I remember Damien from DDE saying sennas could be good news investment wise in the future. Reason being it doesn't have the hybrid system like that in the McLaren P1 which is supposedly a pain and expense in years down the road. Take that with a grain of salt obvs
I often go to Greece in the summer holiday as it is relatively closely to me, depending where I want to go in Greece, it can be anything between 6 hours and 18. The coastal or island roads ar fantastic for an enthusiast driver. The best ones I've encountered were in Halkidiki peninsula, especially in Sithonia arm of the peninsula but also in Lefkada, Kefalonia, Creete and Corfu islands. Not all were great and not all were particularly good asphalted but, for driving enjoyment, they are pretty nice!, also, on the continental Greece, if you cross the mountains, you can find some unknown gems of a roads, mostly deserted. Ffs, even the high altitude highways through the mountains are interesting, flowing and fun. From Thessaloniki towards Ioannina and then down to Igumenita, Parga, Syvota, Preveza or directly to Lefkada, very enjoyable roads...some of them bumpy..but very enjoyable. Anywhere you get of the highway e90, best to do it around Metsovo and towards the sea level..or do a stop and take the road to Meteora, you will have a blast. Just, don't go there in a GT3 😬 Tbh, I feel like Greece is the rugged, balkanic, bumpier version of the Alps. Great driving roads everywhere...most of them empty, if you are not in the middle of the summer, which you shouldn't as it is way too hot, and a little bit of a challenge due to their asphalt and technical nature(lots of off camber corners, lots of blind corners) at speed, because probably no one believed, at the time of their construction, that loonies in fast cars will run them at twice or over the speed limit.
I'm in North Greece. Driven all over. What you said. Not sure how Ferraris and RS Porsches would deal with some of the roads. A car with compliance and some suspension travel is a definite plus. Or stick to the roads with "good" surfaces which limits options a bit. But yeah, deserted driving roads (with free scenery) literally everywhere with some real peaches.
Great to have you back. Interesting podcast. Apols about the length of comment .. I've got 3 of the cars you mentioned and road trip them all. My feedback on your thoughts. 488 .. why wouldn't you go Spider instead of GTB. Other than a small hike in price and the decrease in structural rigidity Spider is the way to go. Weather's a non-issue with that back window that drops to enjoy the v8 and when the rain stops the roof can go down on the move. RS Spyder .. the roof is a non-issue. Put 6000+ miles on mine with 2 road trips in 2024. I'd always take the roof with me but only used it for a 3 out of 8 days in Austria / Switzerland when it rained super-hard. It would have been undrivable without it and for hot trips you'll need the bikini roof configuration in place. Finally, I needed a car that filled the gap between the 488 Spider and RS Spyder which Mrs H would also come in with me on road trips. Options were Bentley GTC, AM DSB Superleggera Volante or 812GTS. We've had the Bentley and it's too sedate for me when I'm on my own. The 812 GTS is around £120k more than the AM so I picked up a 2020 DBS Volante from AM Cheltenham on the 30th Dec. Off to Portugal in it in April .. so go buy some new metal boys 🤣

Sam, I find it really weird that you shrug off the 4RS... when looking for my next car I drove a 992 GT3 and 4RS back to back and the 4RS was the clear winner for me. The sound in the cabin is in a different league to the GT3. Maybe give it a second chance, I think you'll change your tune.

You live in a different world to me and my mates and the cars we like and are interested. Its shown often in the statmeents like cars being coming affordable then saying 80 grand 😂 But thats the point theres loads of different people out there and i dont hang out with your side of the car world so its good to get an insight how you guys view things. For example a old ferrari being restored would be of less interest to me than an escort rs cosworth for example. Because ferraris are just rich boys toys but escos of similar are for the enthusiast i see a proper car guys.

Now the motor industry is in such a downward spiral of poor or over priced products I am simply switching off. 😮 it’s such a shame..
I think M135/40i and M235/40i are some terrifying cars in the wet big turbo torque and power, skinny wheels, no LSD and crap suspension, I've had some new trouser moments in my M240i a few times
1. They have very good ESP/DTC 2. They did in fact have an optional LSD from factory, just dealer-installed instead of factory-installed 3. Outside UK they were available with xDrive 4. Any even slightly capable driver can use the throttle according to conditions...feeding it with feel rather than blindly. (And again: they have very good ESP/DTC) 5. They do not have skinny wheels (or tires), they have pretty good grip.
Funny coincidence you both absolutely LOVE cars again after the complete slaughtering you’d taken in the comments of the last video 👀 🤣 I love the pod regardless and people were overreacting. Just be yourselves
There are some modern enthusiast cars that scratch that itch, the 718 GT4/Spyder, the Lotus Emira, the Alpine 110, however the Supercar space is sorely lacking, as the manufacturers have released a lot of very expensive hybrids with reliability issues. The last car Ferrari released, that I'd want, even with Euromillions in the bank, is the F8, the last Mclaren, maybe the 600LT, the last Lambo would be the Performante, and even then... would I want an F8 more than a 458, would I want a 600LT more than a 675LT, I think the Gallardo Superleggeria might be as much fun as the Performante. The new non-GT Porsche's are too big, too fat, too heavy, the 991 was the last to have a Porsche silhouette. There's a lot of reasons to look back, few to look forward, which is concerning.
Happens to every generation, they fall in love with a type of car and don't want the world to change. Even an mx5 will give you simple driving please, why chase an F8 you can't wring out. Even the 458 is too wide and powerful to fully enjoy. I have a 981S, no fo-mo here
