May not have much replay value, but serious props to this developer for getting ANYTHING to look that nice on the Atari 2600. That machine is not easy to program for, and that is an understatement. 2600 doesn't even have video ram, so you literally have to program around where the TVs electron beam is... in assembler. With no hardware supported multiplication or division. And 128 bytes of ram... Serious props.
@@rj7250a I guess you're being sarcastic, but I'll reply anyways: there's no such a thing as a pixel in Atari 2600 development. You can technically store 8 "pixels" in a byte, but you'll only be able to pretend it's a pixel in your mind, without any output to any TV screen (:>)
I think that if this came out in the early 80's it would have been a big deal. It's much more colorful than most 2600 games and the animations are way better than most games as well. If this go the full 80's cartridge box and manual it would have been huge!
I like the game but I think it really should of had a scoring system. That would of really added to the replay value just to see if you can beat your high score.
I love the homebrew/bootleg scene. Many homebrew games do things with the hardware that the original developers never intended or knew were possible. For example Miyamoto had the idea for Yoshi during the development of the first Super Mario Bros, but wasn't able to implement him in until Super Mario World, but there exists numerous Romhacks and bootlegs of Super Mario World for the original NES and most of them do have a functioning Yoshi. Obviously it doesn't work quite as well as it does in World but it was possible. Homebrews are especially cool because the people who make them usually take the time to get a better understanding of the hardware's limitations than the developers did. While a developer has maybe 5 or 6 years to understand what a system is capable of, a homebrew dev has years to figure it out, and in the case of the 2600 and NES they've had decades to get a complete understanding of the hardware.
Pixelized Dreams games for the Atari cost around 5$ each, so you're in for a treasure trove. Also, get any game made by Activision. They make the best games.
Lat3ksi 343s games are better than anything bungie has been doing with destiny. I personally think all their games are better than bungie last disgusting attempt with reach. Armor lock, and bloom broke the game. Competitive multiplayer was 100 % killed by bungie. And now they just milk a shitty game costing Day one players of destiny to spend at least 180 bucks on the game to have the full experience. Plus after every update bungie makes you buy the new expansion or you can't even play death match lol. Itd take any company controlling halo over Fucking trash that is the modern bungie. They even tried to steal the halo composers work and money and lost to him in court. The halo composer. The guy that made the most iconic game music in the last decade or more, got shoved out the door without being paid and his work stolen. I just hate it when people rag on 343 is if bungie isn't much much worse even with their last attempt at halo.
Aaron I actually liked Reach a lot, introduced assassinations, fine tuned forge mode, had new game modes, improved firefight from ODST. rag on the armor abilities if you want, but other than that and a couple other things, the game didn't have much wrong with it. was it as good as the original trilogy? no, but better than Halo 5. I'll admit Halo 4 was pretty good though. but after Halo 5, I think, story wise, Halo 6 will be disappointing. and that's the funny thing, seems like a lot of people look over the actual stories of games and only care about the multiplayer nowadays. and I guess that is reflected with how new games are made too, with short, generic campaigns and more focus on online play.
MALICEM12 halos story was never good though. It was just supposed to be some Arcady shooting fun. The stories were never deep or meaningful at all. And armor lock is a MAJOR problem, not just some little op part of the game. It made multiplayer unplayable when people used it, don't believe me? play a few games on the non title updated playslists. Custom and forge were a great step up, but 343 did forge and custom games better in 4 and especially 5. 5s forge is on a whole different level, and with the custom games browser, it's now the best halo game ever for playing custom games and forging maps. Plus 5s multiplayer is meticulously balanced. The first time halo got balancing correct. Every weapon has a use in certain situations which was never true in previous halo games. And bloom broke the feeling of halo. It brought an unnecessary randomness to gun fights. And I care about the multiplayer balance as much as I do because I used to be hardcore into the halo competitive scene. Especially in halo 3. I've played all the halo multiplayers to death and reach felt the farthest from halo. Reach did have the best story though and had the best custom and forge at the time. But like I said, bloom and armor lock had major major effects on the basic gameplay and were HUUUGE balancing issues that no one fixed until the title update by, guess who, 343i. That title update playlist it still there too. Try it, plays muchhhh better. Reach wasn't a bad game, t was just the farthest from the basic halo formula and the least balanced of the entire series. And I've never felt like I've been taken advantage of by 343 like I did with bungies destiny. Im fine with reqs in halo 5 because of alllll the free content we got post launch and will continue to get. I feel like halo 5 and 343 handled microtransactions beautifully and has never felt like I had a disadvantage against someone who pays a little extra. feel like so many people forget how much worse off halo could be and just hate on 343 because they weren't the original creators. I honestly feel bad for them, the halo community is toxic towards them for no real reason. It's different than the orginal halos, they put their on flare on it, but what can you honestly expect? They are completely new people working on a game made for over a decade by completely different people. It's like telling a new band they need to make a new Rolling Stones album and expecting it to be exactly like The Rolling Stones would have done it. It's way too much expectations to have on a studio continuing some one else's art. 343 is much more understanding and involved with fans too.
***** as far as your criticism for Destiny goes, I was only talking about Halo, not other Games by bungie, so that's a discussion for another comment chain, I didn't even play destiny that much anyway. For the part of Halo's story, I disagree. I think it's a very good story for a Sci-fi FPS game series. Sure, there are better, more engaging stories out there that make you question things, but by all means the Halo trilogy, and as you said even Reach, had a good story. Halo 4's story showed promise and had potential, but the ending was kinda disappointing. I mean compare Halo 2 or Halo 3's ending to 4, plus the boss fight was just a "push this button, ok now mash this button, OK you win" type battle, which was lame. And not to mention the new bad guy introduced died in the first game of that trilogy, so kinda made him insignificant later on and be replaced by a new bad guy. Not to mention that when 343 took over they added a TOn of lore to the series and expanded it like crazy, so that made the story of some of 4 and 5 confusing due to all the little hidden lore bits and stuff that they didn't really explain, by comparison, the original trilogy had books that expanded the lore, but if you didn't read them then you could still make sense of everything in the campaign and not get lost, as they kept the campaign a little simpler. But in the end 4 was decent in story and promised potential, then 5 came along and not only dropped the ball, but out right had the trailers lie to our faces. You know how you feel about bungie's financial dishonesty in Destiny, that's how I felt about the story of 5. The whole to.e there were on about how chief went rouge and finally was being his own man and looking for Cortana, mean while Locke was being lied to and thought Chief a traitor and was sent to hunt him down, that could have been an amazing story. But instead we got " Chief and blue team run after Cortana (even though blue team didn't really do anything, they were just kinda there) and Locke chases Chief and they fight once for a minute in a lame slow fight and then chief runs on and in then end they all make up and Cortana is the bad guy all along." Story wise, 5 was the most disappointing Halo yet. It was a complete waste and wasn't anything like they made it out to be. They also took out the most of the character customization from Reach, and split screen ( odd when a sequel takes steps in reverse) true, the multiplayer was good and balanced, but at the same time.e it just felt like something was missing. Don't know what. I get that your a competitive player, but most, and even I remember that armor lock was kinda annoying in Reach, but it feels like you are judging Halo more on the technicalities of the multiplayer than the sum of all it's parts. Even with the balancing issues, Reach was still really fun. Whereas with 5 , I didn't really get as much milage out of it, even if it had better balancing and better forge. It lost too much else. 4 was good however, that was a decent game across the board. I'm glad that 343 isn't scamming people for money like many other games are nowadays, but the hope I had for them with 4 was killed by 5, and let's not forget that 343 was created ONLY as a means of milking Microsoft's #1 shooter for all it's worth. I think that's why the community is "toxic" towards them as you say. Honestly when Bungie said they were done with Halo after Reach, I was sad, but wanted Halo to end there, and them just move on, I didn't want Microsoft to pull a Hollywood and ride a great series for its money, I would rather have it simply die and remain a classic. But if 343 pulls another H5 , it's gonna be like the Terminator sequels all over again. Hopefully they truly listen to fans as you say they do, and make 6 better than what 5 was. Because as good as H5's multiplayer was, Halo has always been more than just Multiplayer. I don't "hate all things 343" as I very much enjoyed H4 ( though I miss the old art style) but there is a reason why 343's Halo games aren't held to be classics as the original trilogy was. They just don't have the same soul that they used too. But of course it could be worse, it could be like the newer Call of Duty or resident evil games. Also sorry if this was alittle too long.
My favourite curiosity in this vein is "Aperture" for the TI-99/4, which is a port of Valve's "Portal" written in TI BASIC. Surprisingly it is a challenging set of Portal chambers, with perplexing puzzles and high replay value. A brilliant 2-D homage to one of this generation's great 3-D games.
Very nice. I must have missed this release. I'm still waiting for Starcraft 2600. Thanks for showing so much of the game, the sound effects sound so familiar. Venture 2600 comes to mind.
@Ogma01 Now that you mention it, I think it's pronounced "freeze"... I remember reading about that in an interview with him or something. Dang it, I'd been hearing it the other way I just got used to saying it that way.
Nice review. I was stoked about this when I got it, but in reality I share mostly the same sentiments. Regarding replay value though, it should be noted that the difficulty really ramps up after you complete it once, good for people that enjoy a challenge.
That actually doesn't look half bad. As an 80s kid whose first system was a 2600, had I saw this I would have bought and loved it. Looks a bit like Adventure or Riddle of the Sphinx. Both good games.
It's always interesting to see when old consoles like this get new games. I think developers in Japan have released a new Famicom (NES) game in 2016 on cartridge.
You can either use a flash-cart that will let you connect it to a PC and put it on there, or you can go the difficult and permanent route by buying an expensive EPROM writer, and some blank EPROM chips, and then solder it into an existing cartridge. I'd really recommend the flash-cart method, for obvious reasons.
This game honestly has more gameplay than 90% of the 2600 games I've played (which is about 100 or so). -- They're literally just the same thing over and over, and they get boring after about a minute or two. -- Berzerk kind of has no point, because you just keep going forever, there's nothing to aspire to, there's no way to beat it. -- If this is basically the same as Berzerk, except that the scenery changes, and it's beatable, then it's already better.
Have you tried Raiders of the Lost Ark. That pretty involved. Most of 2600 games are simplistic. Like most games at the time. But i wouldn't say they don't have any gameplay.
So I've been watching your videos for years, when suddenly this was in my reccomended, probably missed it way back in the day because youtube messed up our sub box around then, like they do in a new and exciting way every week nowadays. Anyways, where I was going with this was... the intro, the nostalgia. I do miss the cracking the can and the fizz sip :')
Okay, have seen this one already even back then. Took me a little while, but the moment I saw the little sprites they made for the covenant I realised I laughed my ass off just as I did back then

They released a Doom for the 2600 already but it got recalled because the game had too many bugs and complaints from people who said it was not fully developed and using all of its 4 megabytes of memory, But now we have gone full circle and people need to release a Doom game for this system once again. In that princess rescue game they completely filled out all of the data on that 4 mega byte cart data limit they had to install new chip technology to increase the games data limit, but the problem with Princess rescue is they only released about 300 copies of the game world wide and each copy sells for as high as 150 dollars , they made alot of these Halo 2600 games theres got to be more than 300 im not sure how many, but it is my wish that when they do come out with Doom 2600 it will be similar to how princess rescue was able to maximize the data limit and such i really do want the programmers to fix all the bugs. Also i would love to see a larger game world for Army of Darkness too, i noticed how the game is just like the first area in Krull, and then i noticed theres a horse riding scene in the movie as well as Krull, yet no one put this on the game, there were other areas in krull as well, id like that spider web area get converted into that one area from the movie where you find the Necronomicon the book of the dead, also theres a giant boss scene too id like to see that get some kinda adaptation as well, and then all you got to do is just take Krull and transform it into Army of darkness somehow. I would not buy Army of darkness right now for 150 dollars though even though its rare and has only like 60 or so copies of it released, if the game was bigger in the way im sugesting i think it would be worth more so some people might be more willing to pay 150 dollars if the game was made larger like i suggested. I suppose someday they will come out with Doom 2600 though.
Once I emailed the dev about adding this to that retro arcade app that used to be on XBL. He was actually in charge of that project and did indeed try to get H2600 added but it fell through.
This actually is really cool and it's an OK looking Atari 2600 game. In various countries people still make retro games brand new so this doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me is that the creator of this game is a former high ranking member of Microsoft and Bungie gave the green light for this game to be made. Very cool piece of info.
3:18. The irony is, this statement is true of most the halo games as well. The easiest way to beat them is to just run through to the end without fighting. There are only a few places where you actually have to kill enemies or achieve other objectives to progress.
I'll say again that should have never subtitled it 2600... they should have just called it Halo to allow for the franchise reboot esque subtitle of Combat Evolved in the original game to make sense.
The 2600 and NES were made 8 years apart for one thing, and use very different hardware. "8-bit" simply refers to the underlying hardware architecture, and 8-bit hardware varies widely across systems. It isn't just a single visual style!
I have never actually played Halo. Maybe I should start with this game.

How is that bad?
20$ with a cartridge and a pretty label like that isn't bad.
+DynVec I think its worth more as simply a collectors item rather than as a game in its own right
DynVec Yeah what a steal! Are you joking me?
My favourite curiosity in this vein is "Aperture" for the TI-99/4, which is a port of Valve's "Portal" written in TI BASIC.
Surprisingly it is a challenging set of Portal chambers, with perplexing puzzles and high replay value. A brilliant 2-D homage to one of this generation's great 3-D games.
Very nice. I must have missed this release. I'm still waiting for Starcraft 2600.
Thanks for showing so much of the game, the sound effects sound so familiar. Venture 2600 comes to mind.
Love your videos homie
Thank you!
+Lazy Game Reviews i love how you actaully responded
dude cant believe I've been watching you this long was one of my first lgr videos :)
the fact that you mentioned "Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes", I never met anyone else that had that game. most don't even know about it. Awesome
Classic movie it was based on as well! Weird childhood memories.
I only find the title screen impressive as it shows off what the console is really capable off.
+johneygd
Check the title screen of SwordQuest , that will impress you.
@Ogma01 Now that you mention it, I think it's pronounced "freeze"... I remember reading about that in an interview with him or something. Dang it, I'd been hearing it the other way I just got used to saying it that way.
There is nothing like the 2600 games - very cool review.
there will be a way to teabag. there is no halo game without teabagging.
wat.
Dafuq?
wow i thought everyone knew about teabagging
good ol ghost teabagging
Halo Wars didn't have teabagging.
Nice review. I was stoked about this when I got it, but in reality I share mostly the same sentiments. Regarding replay value though, it should be noted that the difficulty really ramps up after you complete it once, good for people that enjoy a challenge.
This guy always makes my day
man, you've gotten so much better over the years...
@Zito773 I have 241 unique titles at last count, and about 270 if you count label variations.
Next time you ask your friends if they want to play Halo, pull this out
I remember seeing this in the traveling "Video Games and Art" exhibition at an art museum once. Had no idea it was a real working cartridge!
Perfect port.
Awesome art on the cartridge. Very cool!
It may not be vary deep ,but the Theme song is still good!
How ironic, this video is now as nostalgic as Halo 2600
That actually doesn't look half bad. As an 80s kid whose first system was a 2600, had I saw this I would have bought and loved it. Looks a bit like Adventure or Riddle of the Sphinx. Both good games.
I have no idea why I do but I always liked the old intro to these videos.
Now I want someone to make a potato-bit arrangement of Blow Me Away.
NightfallGemini I wonder if Breaking Benjamin would be okay with that
@Dragondraikk Hmm, now that you mention it...
They nailed the music though, Props for that.
I miss these old intros where you drink soda
It's always interesting to see when old consoles like this get new games. I think developers in Japan have released a new Famicom (NES) game in 2016 on cartridge.
Another golden oldie, so cool I never knew this game existed.
Okay...that's adorable :D
I love the music in the beginning of the video!
Is there a season pass with exclusive DLC?
O....wait. Back in the day we talked about add-ons! :')
Knowing what we know now about the creation. It's honestly more admirable.
Great review
The keys reminded me of the atari title, Adventure. :)
That is so badass. Hats off.
Love seeing that Blazing lasers game in the opening. Awesome game.
it's remarkably well polished, would have been big if it was around back in the day!
really good video dude . gained 1 sub
I'm very impressed. WOW!
This seems to me very creative that they have made halo for atari.
@majora1993 Watch the video, starting at 1:18. I got it directly from Al at AtariAge
You can either use a flash-cart that will let you connect it to a PC and put it on there, or you can go the difficult and permanent route by buying an expensive EPROM writer, and some blank EPROM chips, and then solder it into an existing cartridge.
I'd really recommend the flash-cart method, for obvious reasons.
oh, I'm going to love this
What happened to Halo 5 through 2599? lol
+Man from nantucket:
You have a nice body.
Mech Tasker
123 Fake Street. Springfield, USA.
this game is great thanks Ed Fries
This game honestly has more gameplay than 90% of the 2600 games I've played (which is about 100 or so). -- They're literally just the same thing over and over, and they get boring after about a minute or two. -- Berzerk kind of has no point, because you just keep going forever, there's nothing to aspire to, there's no way to beat it. -- If this is basically the same as Berzerk, except that the scenery changes, and it's beatable, then it's already better.
Have you tried Raiders of the Lost Ark. That pretty involved. Most of 2600 games are simplistic. Like most games at the time. But i wouldn't say they don't have any gameplay.
i just bought this game this week, the week before Christmas. There's still more of these second production run Halo 2600 games for sale on Ebay.
When you kill something in this 2600 game the sprite for it dying looks very similar to missingno in Pokemon eh?
you are one of the lucky owners; congrats :D
So I've been watching your videos for years, when suddenly this was in my reccomended, probably missed it way back in the day because youtube messed up our sub box around then, like they do in a new and exciting way every week nowadays. Anyways, where I was going with this was... the intro, the nostalgia. I do miss the cracking the can and the fizz sip :')
Okay, have seen this one already even back then. Took me a little while, but the moment I saw the little sprites they made for the covenant I realised I laughed my ass off just as I did back then
That Atari Halo them is love
I'm working on a 3D Zelda and Minecraft for the Gameboy Advance!
Damn, it looks difficult no joke.
I loved hearing Trilobit's Tom/Jones running in the background :P nice one man! I'm more of a fan of Trilobit's Doctor
cant wait for the online being implemented
Still a better game than WarZ.
it's 01.30am here. energy drink in one hand, mouse the other. I just watch the reviews and I feel the tranquility. I'm whole again. Woodgrain prevails.
Will you do more Homebrew stuff?? I find this stuff really interesting 😄😄
We need Doom 2600!
The gameplay might be short, but I'd get it just for the awesome title screen. It REALLY feels like Halo on the 2600. ^_^
I know this isn't related to the video topic, but what song did he use in the intro? I like the tune of it and want to listen to it in full.
Love the intro.
I always loved Halo. This would be a game I'd play too.
Aaaaah~, that music~! 😄 How lovely and nostalgic. I would've liked to hear the full 8-bit version of it, though. Unless that _was_ it.
Remember the hunt feature on the old Oregon trail game? Looks like that
cool channel, man.
Thank you! This is quite an old video, if you like what you see here I think my newer stuff is much better :)
Ed Fries makes some fun Atari games! His time at Romox was great! Ant Eater IS AWESOME!
WHOAH? are you using the must from the Doctor atari demo in the intro?
I imagine most people get this because of the uniqueness, play it once and put it on a shelf.
that 8 bit warthog run though
Once I emailed the dev about adding this to that retro arcade app that used to be on XBL. He was actually in charge of that project and did indeed try to get H2600 added but it fell through.
This actually is really cool and it's an OK looking Atari 2600 game. In various countries people still make retro games brand new so this doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me is that the creator of this game is a former high ranking member of Microsoft and Bungie gave the green light for this game to be made. Very cool piece of info.
Wow! Halo was so f*** epic back in the days, who knew the idea already existed :o
GamerZEVEN Do you even play Halo?
I still need to order this one but there are so many great homebrews on Atariage I've been wanting to get too :)
0:20 is that the trilo-bit doctor music from the 2600
3:18. The irony is, this statement is true of most the halo games as well. The easiest way to beat them is to just run through to the end without fighting. There are only a few places where you actually have to kill enemies or achieve other objectives to progress.
Why did you put up a pic of Daniel Radcliffe when you said Ed Fries
I'll say again that should have never subtitled it 2600... they should have just called it Halo to allow for the franchise reboot esque subtitle of Combat Evolved in the original game to make sense.
Either way I'd love this game for my collection.
Can i ask you a question..
atari 2600 is 8 bit and nes is 8 bit too, right?
then why is a huge difference between these two consoles' games??
The 2600 and NES were made 8 years apart for one thing, and use very different hardware.
"8-bit" simply refers to the underlying hardware architecture, and 8-bit hardware varies widely across systems. It isn't just a single visual style!
ok thanks.
