I have a much smaller commercially made one which has a basic lunar cycle ( divided by four). I would love to try this, though. Balancing the light will be interesting. I wonder what kind of structure paste/plaster they used, as a normal plaster will be opaque except in the barely skimmed over bits.

The moon can even be red (bloodmoon), there‘s no one colour since the "colour" it has is just off bouncing light from the sun that hits it.
