Wooow! You have a lot of great ideas what you would do after winning the lottery. Do you think it should be mandatory to have a moratorium on the money for at least 6 months and a counselling before receiving the prize? Do you think one would handle the money more wisely opposed to collecting it immediatelly?

It's probably for accountability. They don't want people thinking that some insider working for the lottery commission somehow won. They want it to be random people. Which can also be problematic as this video talks about with other people suddenly wanting all that money for themselves. Maybe they should pass a law that if the lottery is over a certain amount, like say $150 million, then the winner can ask to be anonymous to avoid this "curse".

If so, you might not be able to get the full amount of the money from your winning lottery ticket and then donate about 3/4 amount of this money to charities if you want to keep your winning lottery private, according to the law.

How to win the lottery and not suffer these fates in 10 easy steps:
Step 1 - tell NO ONE, not a soul, no bragging to friends. nothing. Mums the word. You can tell your spouse IF your spouse is a reasonable person. If they are not reasonable keep them out of the loop too.
Step 2 - DO NOT SIGN your ticket. Instead quietly take it down to your local bank and get a safety deposit box. Put your ticket there and walk away. Do it properly at the bank. sign all the right papers, do everything in order.
Step 3 - FIGHT the impulse to get your money right then and there. you have your whole life to spend.
Step 4 - this is the most important step. Go see a LAWYER at a LARGE firm. Tell them you won some money (they don't need to know how much you won) and ask them set up/form a TRUST for the winning ticket. Tell the lawyer you want the winnings to go to the Trust and not to you as an individual. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP YOUR NAME OUT OF THE PAPERS.
Step 5 - Once the trust is set up sign your ticket over to the Trust. Have the lawyers for the trust submit the ticket for validation.
Step 6 - Once your trust has the winnings. MOVE AWAY from your home town - even if just for a year a two. Maybe rent a fancy house or something and buy a FEW things you've always wanted, go on a trip - whatever.
Step 7 - If you want to spread the wealth with family members now you can. Since your name was never in the papers you can say to them "I won at blackjack or whatever in Vegas and I'll share some with you". This lets the family member know they won't be getting millions and a one time win in Vegas is not the sort of well they can keep dipping into.
Step 8 - LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS. Yes, get a nice house (house NOT a MANSION) and drive a nice car (NOT A FERRARI or whatever). Go to school/college and learn about money - you now have the time and money to do so.
Step 9 - over the years tell NO ONE (except spouse) you won the lottery.
    Step 10 : see step 9.

Perhaps it could be because the company operating the lottery need to announce to the public that a real person DID win the lottery. After all, if a lottery company rakes in tens of millions of dollars in lottery tickets but then announces that "We have a winner, but s/he has requested to remain anonymous so we're not revealing their identity." then the public would lose faith, with conspiracies on how the said company only created a fake winner, and kept all the money for themselves.
It would potentially ruin their image and business.

@@lukewhitsell942 yes, as most of them end up bankrupt or dead. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people that win the lottery are poor, or mid range income and that is ultimately what devestates them the most. The fact that they were never sure how to make the money grow initially. Often when hearing people talk about the lottery it's almost always: buy, buy, buy, buy, give, give, give. You seldom hear someone say the first thing they'll do is contact financial advisors, or lawyers. That they would immediately work on building a real estate port folio. That they would find ways to make the big buck bigger. It is unfortunate, but money begets money, and even more unfortunate that the poor will often stay poor.

Besides that, I've never told anyone would I do if I did win big.
I was present when Dad and one of his workmates won $NZ340,000 between the two of them almost 25 years ago. Dad wanted to keep quiet about it. Mother was on the phone to all her friends / family within an hour.
Other guy blew his half in 3-4 months, ended up worse off than he was before the win.
    A lesson was learned.
Keep it all to myself. No one needs to know. I'd carry on working. Giving me time to get used to having all that money, while gaining a decent amount of interest.

There has been too many tragedies for winners that were beyond their control and solely because they're forced to publically come forward.

    • @TheZephyrsWind

I agree, but that makes the lottery thing shady. Who knows where the money goes in that case? That's why there are records on everything, just about. It's best if instead of revealing their names, they just keep their identity hidden and in the government's records so that there's no corruption and you also don't get stalked.
Still, I have no interest in the lottery at all either way.

I think the problem with winning the lottery is that once you win big, the money you get there is all you will ever have, effectively. What you earn from normal work (if you continue to work) will be insignificant in comparison to the millions you just won, especially considering it is usually not rich people who play. So basically, we can ignore all further income and just assume that the winner will never earn money again. But that means that you have to budget differently. If you're used to being able to spend the money you have because that money comes from a regular, reliable source of income, you must change that mindset immediately, or your habit of spending what you have will lead to you spending all your money immediately for a lifestyle you can not sustain, leaving you back where you started after a few years.
If you want to be provocative, you could say that winning the lottery doesn't make you rich, it removes your regular income for the rest of your life (or, less provocatively and more precisely, raises your expectation of lifestyle over what your income can support).

    • @rileyxbell
      @rileyxbell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Not even true. You can make 10% on your money yearly pretty easily. For a $300 million jackpot after taxes that's 30 million dollars a year of income. Without even touching your 300 million principal.
