I don’t know why you’re surprised Eddie fell in love so fast. He was coming out of an addiction and needed something to cling to besides the gunslinger of course he was going to fall in love with the next girl he saw.
Started Dark Tower inbetween some really big fantasy series like Stormlight and Wheel of Time, and was cought off guard with what the series was plot/structure wise compared to WOT/Stormlight. One hell of a ride and so many "WTF" and "HUH!?!?" moments. Finished Song of Susannah few weeks ago and will take my final ride with Roland to the Dark Tower next week. Long days and pleasants nights sai.
I just finished reading the Drawing of the Three, and in about to go onto The Waste Lands, and I'm pleased to say that I'm agreeing heavily with everything in this video! I adored the Gunslinger, and this book has just continued my adoration of the series so far
All these people who dislike the first book are just objectively wrong. The first book was easily the best in the whole series. I love how he wrote it in this cinematic style which painted surreal images in your head. Those images are like album covers that invite you to interpret them. The first book is definitely the same King who wrote Different Seasons and who still had artistic and literary aspirations. The next two books, by contrast, are more like entertaining comic books (which is fine), and from book four onward, the series definitely seemed like it was being written by the same later king who wrote Dreamcatcher or Bag of Bones, unfortunately. Dismissing the first book in favor of the ones that came after is like saying you like Cell more than Pet Sematary. "It's my opinion hurr durr subjective huhuh gate keeper!" No. There's a guy who posted a comment on some other video somewhere that was complaining about "all the talk of universes" in the first book and thought the scene in the golgotha at the end of the first book should have been trimmed. It's like, are you f*cking serious, dude? I don't mean to be a jerk or anything, but that is not an "opinion," it's straight up mental illness. That scene is one of the best things about that book because it hinted at the cosmic significance of the Tower and incites your imagination. It's a long time joke that King's readers don't like many of his endings, but that particular ending is one of the best in any book he ever wrote. To end a book written in a cinematic and visual style which evokes Sergio Leone's westerns with something like a Space Odyssey psychedelic vision is just awesome on a stylistic or aesthetic level. Just the idea of that is great. There is no fantasy horror western directed by Leone with a psychedelic Kubrick ending, but shouldn't there be? In a perfect universe, there WOULD be. In the best of all alternate universe timelines, you can be certain that particular movie exists. And this guy is like "yeah, he should have just taken that out." What the hell? At some point, you just have to say "f*ck your opinion. You are wrong."
Man, you are almost a natural at this. You have some ground to cover in terms of acting totally natural, but holy shit man. You're doing good shit. Im here for stephen king and my girlfriend is here for Dune, so keep it up! Loving it so far
*Happy new year!* I've only read Gunslinger, but your appreciation for the first two books has me wanting to go back and get through the series now. I was in the camp of trying to read King's books by publication order (har-har), but that's crazytalk.
Thanks Sandra!! I'm glad you're thinking of giving the series a shot again. I'm on the 4th book now and haven't binged a series this fast since I read HP as a kid. Trying to read King in pub. order sounds like a crazy, insane challenge I'd want to do one day...one day
I got sucked into it and I literally can't stop. I want to read the extended stuff afterward. I'm already on Wizard and Glass and I see no point of slowing down, lol. I guess I decided on a reading order XD
Thanks Liz! Cheap champagne is the 2021 mood. I'm glad I'm convincing you about DT. Lots of people hate the gunslinger but LOVE the rest of the series, so it's definitely worth a shot when you have some space on your probably very lengthy TBR, lol
Just finished an agreed with all you said. What a stark contrast from book one but both really worked for me. Looking forward to reviewing these on my channel and also continuing to watch your reviews. Love your stuff dude
Hey, thanks! Can't wait to see your review. This series has been one of the best parts of 2021 for me. I'm on book 5 now and loving it. Can't wait to see what you think of book 3
Read Drawing over a week and a bit and going to work in the morning, I had to peel myself away from it. I just felt like everything worked against me just sitting down with it, but man, I did the last hundred pages at least in one sitting and it was the best! LOVED this book! Great review also man, we seem to agree on almost everything.
Of all 7, Drawing of the Three was definitely my favorite, I actually read the first 3 books in reverse order (Wasteland then Drawing of the Three then Gunslinger) and it was definitely strange reading Gunslinger after the other two.
i read stephen kings opinion about idris playing gunslinger, he stated something like “when i write a character, i don’t see how they look from the outside, nor this skin color” so i read the book, and all king talks about is how the gunslinger is a white man with blue eyes, and it plays a major part with odetta and detta when it comes to how and why she hates the gunslinger , it’s like the people who made the damn movie didn’t read the second books and wanted to cast a black man as the gunslinger….. but all in all, my least favorite part of this book was when he was doing the detta voice and talking about jim crow laws and race, just took me out of the fantasy aspect
Yes I always tell people to carry on with the series if they didn't like The Gunslinger. I, personally, still struggle with that book even after finishing the series and re-reading it. But this is a great review
I was raised in a hyper religious house and I honestly was made to believe that even touching a Stephen King book would somehow open you up to demonic possession. So when I finally started reading him it was so trippy. I’m really glad I have read him and my opinion of his writing has only gone up.
yeah I finally got my mom to start reading the series and she finished Drawing a few months ago and she fell head over Hills in love with it. she also had the same exact complaint you have with how quickly Eddie falls in love with Susannah.. it doesn't personally bother me although I don't know why cuz it normally would but I totally understand why that creative decision would be disliked
They really are. If the first doesn't hook you in, the second definitely will. Everyone is bound to enjoy SOMETHING from these books, considering all the genre hopping
@@ManCarryingThing there's a point, several books later, where it peaked for me and never quite recovered. But still worth reading to the end, after such a strong start, it felt like a series I'd be a traitor to not complete
The difference/similarity between The Gunslinger and The Drawing if the Three truly reminds me of the difference/similarity between Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat. The first book in each series is the foundation for the sequel(s). Some prefer book two over the first because the story is able to expand on the world and events. Movie fans say the same thing about The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and The Godfather Part II. But one must not forget that the sequel could not tell the story it tells without the existence of the first one.
I read first three books of the Gunslinger Saga and I stopped. Since I had a long pause after that I decided to go again from beginning. I still cant believe he lost his fingers to a overgrown lobster. So infuriating. He is the best gunslinger from the old world. THE BEST! That is why i dont like him loosing his fingers that easy at the beginning.
i hated the gunslinger, took me 3 times over 3 years to get through it , this book helped me get back on track, liked it much better, but still waiting to get hooked….
Right now I'm reading Drawing the three and it was interesting for a while but too draggy, detailed and a little boring.Does it get better in the third installment?
I've read the first 2 books and they were a struggle to get through. I don't understand why these are considered such great books. These have put me off reading for the next month. Are the other books any better? I'm still willing to give them a chance since I'm a fan of King's other books.
I'm half-way through it and I honestly think Gunslinger was better. Something is being set up but I'm losing interest as the writing is not pointing to anything besides these seemingly random people. I love Eddie tho lol
Eddie fell in love within 2 sentences.
😂
I don’t know why you’re surprised Eddie fell in love so fast. He was coming out of an addiction and needed something to cling to besides the gunslinger of course he was going to fall in love with the next girl he saw.

I do love the climax, Roland basically used Jack basically as a GTA character in a roleplay server 😂
Wow that is a very apt description. He steals ammo, pills and guns. Knocks out a couple cops too lol
"Roland didn't know who Magda was, or what She had seen.." Cracks me up everytime.
“I don’t know what a Tooter fish is but it sure is delicious”
"Eddie stiffened as he felt Roland stiffen inside him"

This "choo choo" stuff and what I'm assuming it entails really put me off carrying on with Drawing Of The Three.

If I'm correct, there was a fire and he lost his outline for this series and had to rewrite it. That's y it seems differential from the 1st book
i wish the whole series was written the way the gunslinger was written.
the only other book i GAF about is Wizard & Glass.
Started Wizard and Glass yesterday, really excited to see more of Roland's backstory
Wizard & Glass also at the top of my list.
Ahaha, your first time. Great good stuff man.

Thanks jim! It's been such a joy to read. I'm on the 4th book now. Classic King, and truly inventive fantasy
This book is essentially a sitcom starring paraplegic twoface a recovering junkie and a guy who is currently dying from an infection
Do I really gotta read the stand before starting the drawing of the three?
i hated the gunslinger, took me 3 times over 3 years to get through it , this book helped me get back on track, liked it much better, but still waiting to get hooked….

And that instant romance between Eddie and Odetta is unrealistic and ridiculous!
I feel like those who don't like the second book probably won't like the rest of the series. It more or less sets the tone (book 4 being an exception)
Hearing about jim crow laws kinda detached me from the whole fantasy aspect.
I just finished the Drawing of the Three and I jumped into the Stand because I’m a sucker for extended mythologies.
I've read the first 2 books and they were a struggle to get through. I don't understand why these are considered such great books. These have put me off reading for the next month. Are the other books any better? I'm still willing to give them a chance since I'm a fan of King's other books.
I'm in the same position. The drawing of the three definitely dragged for me near the end... Want to keep going but, kinda sucked of all enthusiasm..
Jack’s death was felt kind of epic. I mean, he was being chased by police while he was on fire and he just walked in front of a subway train.
Have you ever tried eye liner to fill in the gap under your nose? I’ve been told it works....from a friend....no experience myself. /s

still waiting for a decent dark tower film if someone actually put effort into it it would be a big franchise oh well

Wastelands is better IMHO. Nice listening to a literature buff not shit on King.

Odetta, detta, was the hardest part of this book to read. I really wasn’t a fan!
Wheres my wastelands review dammit
nevermind Im dumb and cant use the youtube search bar
The way King writes Odetta/Detta is unforgiveable. Nauseating.
I really disliked this book.
