Hi matt Like I said on Bachmann video it too expensive for what it is. Your review great some great camera work. I wonder if Bachmann have an more djm in the pipeline Keep safe arp
Thanks for the quick look at the EFE Rail J94. I’ve got one from my wife waiting for me at Christmas in the LMR livery. It looks great, and will go nicely with my KWVR inspired layout. Hope yours remains reliable. Initial signs look promising. It does seem a little expensive, but compared with normal Bachmann prices I don’t think it’s too bad, especially considering both Kernow Model Rail Centre and Bachmann will be wanting to make money from them,
I like these but do tend to go for military locomotives. I would like the Amy green version and possibly this too as I have two LMR wagons. Thx for posting.
Good review! This brand of J94 seems better than Hornby's own. I recently had to trade in a Hornby J94 because it just kept having problems running, not being able to complete a full circuit of my small layout. All my other locos work fine and my track is regularly cleaned so the issue wasn't my track. I sent it to be serviced at a local model shop and they couldn't find the problem, I even sent it off to Hornby's repairs department and they said they couldn't find what the problem was. After trying to find the problem myself and giving it the best possible service, it still couldn't be corrected. So in the end I gave up and traded it in. I am tempted to buy the EFE Rail J94 as I am disappointed by Hornby's product quality on models in recent years, apart from some exceptions. Would you rate this J94 better than Hornby's?
They are a slight improvement, running wise. That LMR Blue does look nice tho! Price is on the high side, also I've heard its extremely difficult to fit this with sound,
Bought one of these as my starter loco and it ran relatively well at first but has since become very stop start/jumpy and is also quite noisy. Other loco’s I’ve since bought run fine on my line - I can accept the noise but the hesitance is a pain. any tips on improving performance where possible would be welcome. FWIW I think they look fantastic
Ive got both- hornby has stronger motor, metal con rods, a sprung axle, metal sprung buffers and only 2 slight issues of part of the gearbox visible and moulded injectors and dart. The djm/dapol has nicer dart, no exposed gearbox, but still moulded injectors, a weak motor, split chassis design, plastic sprung buffers, plastic con rods, and a weird design where the motor stays with the shell when disassembled- so you never get an exposed running chassis if you get problems. Mine has problems of either not freely spinning motor if screwed together correctly or not properly meshed worm if shimmed even a little and because of its design its impossible to tweak to get a solid performance
It's a great model but the higher price rise does put a few people off. I know a few people questioned Bachmann about the pricing on their TH-cam channel and they said it was due to a new motor. The other locomotives in this range have also confused the model railway magazine journalists and a recently couldn't understand why they price rised the Heljan class 17 diesel in the EFE range when the same loco is still slightly cheaper from Heljan.
The new motor excuse is just a cover for the price hike. It’s the same motor as used in the Ivatt tank and the J72 neither of which have an RRP which is even close to £150
@@jamesscobie6374 it's the same with the Heljan locomotives in the range they are more expensive in the EFE range than the ones sold by Heljan themselves.
I am interested to see if the mechanism is still the sprocket nightmare that was the DJM one, or if they do something coiherent for a OO model, one criving axle and the two others running with the coupling rods instead of three driving axles and a cosmetic coupling rod. And there is no LNER version, the one I've bought from DJM. For GBP 130, not worth the price for me because zero dfie-cast. the last 0-6-0 I've bought, the Oxford Rail J27, is far better even at a price of less that GBP 100, even if it have some issues (detached footplate and chimney on mine on arrival, and unblackened axles extremities).
I have three DJ Model Austerities, I will admit I love them but they are troublesome... Severely tempted by the WD Waggoner variant in green though may have to eventually get one myself!
Hi Matt. I've got 2 DJM j94's. Never had an issue with either. They still run very smoothly. If I'm honest, that's far too pricey for me. Like the livery but it
I know Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost my login password. I love any tips you can give me!
@Jaxxon Leighton Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Hi Matt, only comment I would make on your short review, apart from the high cost of the model, is why you didn't show the original DJ models one you have running alongside the new one to compare their running quality. Other then that I quite like these J94's, I'd go for "Amazon" myself but the cost is too high for what is an 0-6-0 tank engine, so I'm still looking for a smart high powered industrial engine for my coal mine scene. Best regards Dave.
I had my over one week now and it runs well but i've have trouble over one set of points, But the reason I choses the J94 over Bachmann pannier tank and because it was very different and re-engineered. It's only let down is the price but is it Bachmann way to say EFE rail range exclusive.
I believe I read in the Hornby Magazine that they retail at £149 which is in my opinion about £50'overpriced and your comment at the end saying 'Not the best but a nice model' just makes the point. I'm afraid at £150 for a tank loco I'd expect it to be the best modern production methods allow. To give some perspective during lockdown I bought two Hornby locos new not second hand, an S15 DCC fitted for £129 and a Q1 again DCC fitted for £158 both plus shipping. I suppose it's down to what you need/want for your layout, I'm sure there are people out there that would question me for paying nearly £250 each for two Dapol Westerns with DCC sound although it does seem to me that Bachmann's pricing is out of step with the other manufacturers.
In my opinion Matthew the (LMR) Long Moor Railway J94 seems to be a better quality than the oldest J94 and also a larger cab but a simler boiler plus the (LMR) Long Moor Railway has a better livery and a very good running quality back and fourth on the layout. JJ ❤
Nice little model but i think the price is horrendous for a small model completely made of plastic should be around 50 to 60 quid...maybe they would sell more at a reasonable price 😎
Even better the Bachmann pricing has confused a model railway magazine as well on both this model and the EFE class 17 diesel which was confirmed as a Heljan model by the magazine as they looked in the maintenance documents and it said that for technical assistance please call Heljan. Bachmann are charging slightly more money for the class 17 as well.
Awful model- pricey, plasticy, exposed screw heads by wheels (obvious when weathered), weak motors, and all the joys of spit chassis with the added benefit of the motor staying with the body when disassembled- always fun when trying to fix problems. Hornby (ex dapol) far superior model
I love all steam engines, real and model alike. The only type of steamy I don't love is the Southern kind, with the exception of two: Oliver Bullied's Taw Valley and Richard Maunsel's Sir Lamiel. I do like Sir Lamiel a bit more than Bullied's Pacifics, if only because Sir Lamiel has a sharp bark that I liken to a GWR Tender Engine. That aside, your model of the J94 Saddle Tank Engine from the Longmoor Military Railway is stunning. I don't have a J94 in my collection, but I do have the tiniest Side Tank Engine of all. It's an A1 Terrier Tank Engine, whom I've affectionately named Timothy, in South Eastern & Chatham Green livery. While the J94 is expensive to buy price wise, she's not the most expensive model on the shelves. In my own line-up of GWR Tender Engines, there is a Limited Edition steamy who I bought online from Locomotion Models Shop in Shildon, and she cost £149 to purchase. She runs on my railway perfectly well, and I got what I paid for. Her name is City of Truro. She is a superbly detailed model engine. Top that if you can.

I thought you might added a few wagons to the loco to pull around for a few minutes, but nice to see anyway.
How does it compare the the Hornby versions, l got a Hornby one last year for £66 so that is double the price is it really twice as good.
Ive got both- hornby has stronger motor, metal con rods, a sprung axle, metal sprung buffers and only 2 slight issues of part of the gearbox visible and moulded injectors and dart. Oddly enough the bogie China clay wagon is exactly the same price as the ones Kernow still have in stock, strange coincidence or what?

Great loco mate I’ve got Waggoner I was very happy but there were afew blemishes on the body
Nice review matt in my opinion it seems a little over priced for what it is but that is just my opinion.

Thanks so much, you saved my account :D
@Caleb Lyric glad I could help :)
Great video Matt they look like ok models in my opinion
Does this tooling have factory fitted speakers? Thanks
Hi Matt, only comment I would make on your short review, apart from the high cost of the model, is why you didn't show the original DJ models one you have running alongside the new one to compare their running quality. Good review, my headline is OK for £60, have they stuck with the coreless motor?
no front coupling hook on the efe version?

My DJ Models J94 runs just fine. Maybe I was lucky? Not sure if I would pay £50 more for the new EFE J94 though. Afterall is only an 0-6-0.

Try paying $800 for new tank engines. Don’t forget how lucky you Poms are.
Hi Matt its a very nice looking model but being all plastic I do think a RRp of £130 + is a bit expensive.........Cheers Kev
Nice loco and Model
They look decent, although I’m more of a Modern-Image fan than a steam, I know! I’m crazy 🤪

I have 3 DJ models 2 of them were locally based. It is a nice model a bit overpriced. Good review though.
Nice little model but i think the price is horrendous for a small model completely made of plastic should be around 50 to 60 quid...maybe they would sell more at a reasonable price 😎
Nearly dropped when I saw the price matt , I have a hornby one and theresn no real difference 🤔

so , whats not to like ....... £130 of plastic ! I think Matt is out voted judging by these comments , he hasn't replied anyway ....................
65 pound tops

The P class is a smaller side tank...
Bachmann selling cheap tat, for high prices.
Too pricey.
Over priced.
