In West Germany, in the summer of 1987, a friend and I would listen to this song almost every day on the way to work. He didn't know who sang it, and I've been searching for.......well 28 years. I just knew there was a line like 'Away......' and something about a knife mentioned at one point. I just heard it on an 80s mixcloud mix just now and Shazamed it. Can't believe I've found it. I was always worried that it wouldn't be as good as I remembered it, but it holds up all these years later. Man, I still can't believe this.
Wunderbar! Thanks for sharing such a WONDERFUL story 💜 I LOVE this song and have many good memories growing up in LA and listening to KROQ. Best time for music ever
Cool Story. I had a Similar experience. I taped this song off of a college radio station. Had the cassette tap all of these years but never knew who the artist was. Decided to try Shazaming the Taped song and it pulled up The Bolshoi. I I mediated lye purchased it on iTunes
+Seán McGuinness Count me in, almost the same story as yours. I first heard it around 89 here in Houston, Tx. It took some time, like 20+ yrs to finally find it through extensive research
+Seán McGuinness here in portugal at the same time, 87, I listened bolshoi away tracy chapman fast car and cocteau twins treasure full album in a basf cassette...
What I appreciated the most about The Bolshoi back in the 80's was that they sounded like a really great "blend" of all the awesome bands from that genre then, all rolled into one. Peter Murphy, Psychedelic Furs, The Cult, The Church, Simple Minds, Flesh For Lulu, etc. the list goes on.
... I hear ALL those too... "the list" would also include Lords of the New Church, Comsat (or CS) Angels, The Mission, Sisters of Mercy and a bit of The Alarm
Many people saying no one knew about these guys here in the US. ILOVED THIS BAND and always felt like I had the wrong taste in music because no one I ever spoke to about these guys had heard of them. I loved this song soooooo much. My heart aches for that era. I’m 51 now only to findI I’m not the only one. Many years spent an isolated fan.
This song was played constantly when it came out in a Punk/New Wave Club in South Florida called Echoes back in the mid to late 80's. I LOVE this song STILL. I truly feel lucky that I had that as a teen...
It was played in Louisiana in Lafayette at a club called the kingfish. I have loved it for many years in top 5 fav songs of all time. A timeless classic.
One of the rare occassions when youtube recommends something worth watching. Great lyrics, guitar work and tight rythm section. Thank you, The Bolshoi, for such a wonderful track!
Ever since a friend of our played this song for us back in the 80s, it instantly became one of my top favorites. What an amazing, uplifting song and makes you just want to dance, enjoy life, drive or have fun. Great music, absolutely incredible and timeless.
I'm addicted to this song, first time I can't spend a single day without listening to it 😍. I just subscribed to Spotify and it was suggested ! I'm only 25, so I'm sorry I've never heard of this band, it was a bit of a shock to discover that there is only two albums, they deserved much more recognition in my opinion, this song is timeless and a true classic. I love the lyrics and how they are sung.
This song brings me back to my youth in Manila. I was wearing semi-bell bottoms , twisted red cross shirt , mohawk hairdo , army medic bag and black trenchcoat. Come to think of it, that later that became Goth. Best of times, punk and new wave were being played by DWXB 102.7 FM. Good times.
Great song, great scenery. I miss the alternative music of the 1980s. Singer has smooth movements and chilled out expressions. 1980s Euro alternative music was the best ever.
So glad I came across this song somehow in the mid '80s in Florida. Difficult at the time! Listened to my cassette constantly and bought the CD years later as my tape was on its last legs. Still listening all these decades later. Though after a lyrics search I'm glad I wasn't imagining two lines about a baby that is cut from this.
Just listening for the first time ever, and I am shocked I didn't hear them back in the 80 when they came out. Their sound is so tight and compelling - this song could have been at the top of the charts. Thankful at least for finding them now.
Ahhhhhh the genuine 80’s music is soooooooooooooooooo refreshingly awesome compared to what’s out there today. Today’s junk focuses too much on profanity and bashing people and making sure their junk is making them money instead of just giving music fans something to enjoy listening to like 80’s and the 90’s artists did. Pretty sad
I have the pleasure of seeing Trevor Tanner play locally every so often and truth be told, he is a true guitar god. He just keeps getting better. When he gets to open her up it's amazing, he deserves every listen
This song helped me through a miserable time; my sony walkman always had it nearby when I needed it. To be a teenager again! Nope! I do love this amazing song.
This is example number one of thousands of how good the music was in the eighties. NO one knew who these guys were back when, so many brilliants bands played, came and went with narry a blip.
I was a music rep in the 80's.. These guys blew my mind w/their dark, surreal melodies and lyrics.. In later yrs I ordered everything from Amazon. Thank God.. Got it all now..
It never ceases to amaze me what hidden gems I discover from the 80s and yet I'm 51!!! I think free radio never played anything but the popular hits. Sirius XM's First Wave station has changed all that for me several decades later. I could listen to that station all day long.
The extended mixes of this song in the club take you places in the mind and your body just follows. Some of the best music from this Era. I'm lucky to have lived it
I had this on a crappy old TDK tape when I was a teenage goth in '97 (in Argentina), and I swear this is the first time in my life I see this clip. My 16 yr old self is at peace with the world
Banda extraordinária. Excelente guitarrista e compositor, Trevor Tanner.

I bought the album in 1987 on the strength of this song alone, and I was not disappointed in the slightest by the rest of the material. I had it on LP and on tape cassette, and constantly played the cassette to save the album because I was wearing the thing out! A really really good album this was, there's a lot of strong songs on it, all up to the calibre of this single. I was disappointed they did not get farther than they did, because there was enough hairspray around in 1987 to light most of Minnesota on fire by aerosol can. The Bolshoi definitely broke through that, at least to me, and made an impression. I'm here right now aren't I? It's thirty plus years later and this song is still class. Added this to my playlist again some months ago after not hearing it since the 80s along with books on the bonfire. Everything about it brilliant, bass line, the drum fills and the lyrics that you could visually make your own video up to in your head. Tony

In Brazil, they are famous for this song and Sunday Morning ❤

True, they didn't get much of a push but cool stuff.

Sim os arranjos são dos góticos dos anos 80. muitos das bandas underground dos brasileira dos anos 80, pegava esses arranjos britânicos!

The popular music of today lacks the sophisticated lyrics found in this song. This requires true intellectual firepower; something missing today!
Great song, great scenery. I miss the alternative music of the 1980s. Singer has smooth movements and chilled out expressions. 1980s Euro alternative music was the best ever.

at 1:32 a line is missing
Money's scarce, but family honor
Brings it home brings it home(brief but awkward pause)
The light shows up the dust
That plays around your face
The full line on both the album and 12 single is
Money's scarce, but family honor
Brings it home brings it home
And down the shop, the tongues they snicker
TV dinners, beer, and liquor... oh yeah
Skeletons fall out of cupboards
Curtains drawn fall open to allow
The light shows up the dust
That plays around your face
Now my question is thus:
Was this censorship,, budgetary reasons, label interference or the band's decision. ?
