Having done both long haul and short/medium haul in the same airline, the best way I have to describe it is that short/medium is more tiring during the work itself, but long haul is definitely more health damaging. I really enjoyed the fact that I had to go to the airport less times while at my time at the A330, but those long night duty periods were really killers...

Great video once again, I've watched all your videos but can't remember if you talked about how you decided you wanted to get a career in commercial aviation. Would love a video on your personal route from a young age to your position as a Commercial pilot

Hi Mentour! Now you have done the T/O handling video, I would love to take some information about landing the 800. What the proper technique is, how you maybe like to do it which may differ from Boeing's method etc. I also would be very happy to see some pictures or maybe a short video about what you see exactly in your seat. How high and close your eyes are in comparison to the glareshield (and yes, that is because I would like to have the most realistic viewpoint possible in Flight Simulator :) Thank you so much for your video's, I hope you are getting enough suggestions for content because I always do stay tuned until the end!

Thanks for another great video. I understand it a lot better now.
Can you explain your pay structure, amount perhaps, difference in crew, and w you get paid (ie:pay by distance flown, hourly, or salary).
    Have a great vacation.

Hey Mentour I really like your videos and wish you the best of luck and was wondering if you can make a video talking about the terms and conditions that a pilot is most likely going to see with his airline and what are the usual benefits the pilot gets from his airline and I'll be looking forward for that video thank you

Hi Captain Mentour. First of all, awesome videos! Very helpful. Could you please make a video on holding patterns and Captain fuel. Basically its about the captains decision whether he decides to takeoff with the planned fuel or if he thinks he should carry more fuel than planned. Thanks

Wow, this was seven years ago! Not an aviation question, but I'm curious, because I love languages and wish I was raised learning more than English. Now I continue studying Spanish & German. Do you and your wife try to teach your kids Swedish, Spanish, and English?

I know that you have talked about how the pilot job can get "boring" or less entertaining through the years of working in the business but my question to you is, how is it to for example sit on a 3 hour flight monitoring, does'nt it get some what boring to you?

  • @lewiet662
    @lewiet662 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear MenTour Pilot,
becoming an airline pilot is my biggest dream.
I still have some anxious feelings about the idea that a pilot might become bored by possessing the same workflow.
Please, do not think that the work of an airline pilot is boring. I love the work of an airline pilot but some people are saying me that I have a wrong perception of pilot's work.
I just would not like to do a job with an ordinary routine.
Is each flight as structured as the other flight?
Do each flight bring a new challenge for the pilot?
Are all flights unique and quite different from eachother?
I will be very glad, if you answer me.
    Yours sincerely
    Lewiet

    Medium or long Haul?
Example: In Canada flying from Montreal to Vancouver is 6 to 6 1/2 hours, the difference being caused according to direction by the jet stream. given Canada's low population density, extremely busy areas are less than in other countries. Aside from Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL), I think most would be quiet compared to much in Europe.
In such a roster you might fly non-stop or you might do the "milk run" stopping at toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton International (Near Nisku AB) and finally in Vancouver. I don't think they land reasl heavies inn Sydney on the Saanich peninsula (seiving lower Vancouver island. If I remember in 1985 we had to change planes for that short hop, which only went up to 7000 feet,.and took less than 30 minutes I don't think that airport would have enough land to make the length of runways needed to land large airbusses, but the longer flights used to use Lockheed L10-11's.
How would such flights likely compare for pilots from Europe if they were flying such routes? Would they like such a roster or not? time zones as follows:
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I.: Atlantic, 1 hour later than Eastern. Quebec and most of Ontario: Eastern (same as N.Y.C.) Manitoba: Central time (1 hour earlier than Eastern) Saskatchewan: Central with an anomaly: Saskatchewan does not use daylight saving time, whereas other provinces do seasonal (change dates same as U.S.A.)
Alberta: Mountain time (2 hours earlier than Eastern) British columbia Pacific time, same as L.A.X.)
I have excluded arctic flying as it is quite a different matter. Differences between true North and Magnetic North become much more exaggerated, and, of course ice and strong wond issues are a much bigger challenge, and there is much more.
Sometimes in trans Atlantic flights problems occur, not necessarily in the plane, but on the ground or in distant airspace which may cause a need to land before arriving in major Canadian or U.S. destinations. This happened during the 911 air shutdoew where planes with huge numbers of Americans had to lane in relatively small airport in Gander Newfoundland. The is a town of only 10,.000 residents, and the "ground rescue" situation came up roses under the circumstances. Gander is in Newfoundland time, 1 1/2 hours later than Eastern, but it is also a cold and rough climate!
There is quite a video on You Tube about that event, which many of your followers might like, but on the other hand I wouldn't want pilots to think that Canada is all "a perpetual icebox" - If you came in July or August, and there were ladies along, they might like to also bring their bikinis! I personally have known temperatures from -45 C with an added 60 mph wind to +37 degrees in a combination of Montreal and Toronto.

My reserve is typically 20 days a month. This month I am in the air for more than 75 hours and still have another weeks worth of reserve days to cover after that. My days off are broken up. I have no more than one day off at a time until the end of the month where 7 of my 10 days off are blocked together. It's exhausting and frustrating. But the rules in Canada say I'm legal to do it. Amazing how you get 4 days off in a row. I would kill for that.

On top of that my pairings switch from early mornings to evening shifts. Very difficult to get well rested. There is no time for family, exercise or personal development. Just grind away for years at a time hoping things will get better.

that's insane.....everybody else in society is entitled to 2 days off per week. Considering the enormous responsibility of a pilot I'm shocked. I'm Canadian and I think we all need a scheduled routine to be happy and productive and in your case, 100% safe. But obviously with serving the publics needs as a pilot, that's not possible.

  • @BrucexfromxCanada

As you remarked briefly about the added time complications of night flying, it reminded me of something bizarr that comes from the arctic. Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport (YUL) in Montreal has frequent flights north to places like Kujjuak and Iqaluit. the flight would be about 3-4 hours.
there passengers would chage to and from small flights to many Inuit settlements along the Povungnituk river and in the vicinity of Ungava Bay.
One night in Dorval (which is where YUL actually is, about 10 miles west of downtown Montreal), I mer two ladies while boarding a local bus. apart from their somewhat sallow complexions and different appearance from Montreal locals, they were functioning in a way that suggested as if it were noon, not 7 ir 8 PM. when I asked them where they came from, sure enough they came from the Arctic. I surmise that their being used to the Arctic 6 month day and 6 month night, or close to, they were naturally that physically adapted to the different body clock that they would normally have taken that totally for granted.
(I also mentioned noghting language differences. I a flight like that, you would need a cre capable of as many as 8 different dialects of Inuit, Inuktitut etc, and they are all very different from Western script and more!) These peoples are also known to have very strong family bonds, much more than Us in the south!

I haven't done it yet I'm starting next week when they send the confirmation email. Their are a couple famous online atop courses put their. If you apply for an airline finishing the atpl online do they think like, going to a school is better so I don't think the likeliness of an online atpl graduate from an online source is in our top choice?

2 different types of aircraft it is better to compare boing with boing and airbus with airbus
More then basic controls are the same
From engineering prespective lots of difference not that we will feel it on the controls maybe on handling
