You have to look at your wires before you disconnect them to see what they are plugged into on your old thermostat. Everything should be labeled and you can take a picture of it. Once they are disconnected then that’s going to make it much more difficult to know which wire is what.
Looks like it might be better than the Nest thermostat that I spent 5 days trying to get working and finally sent back. I do have a C wire now. Not sure I want to mess with it. Thanks for video.

Thank you for this video. I am interested in the product too. My thermostat wiring setup is same as your thermostat. One question, your didn't connect the loop wire from RH to RC on your new thermostat. Did you experience any issues with AC cooling function. A reply will be appreciated.
Hello, I have had zero issues. I read online the red loop wire wasn’t needed with this and I’ve had no issues. I often switch between heat and cooling throughout the day this time of year and it’s worked perfectly. I know someone else who had the R loop wire too and they didn’t use it either with this and it’s worked fine. Obviously systems vary but I think you’ll be fine.
@@ChristianBimmer You should not need the jumper. When you have the little blue plastic piece slid in the up position that basically creates the jumper for you. Colors don’t really matter. It’s about what letter corresponds to each wire. You need to match those to the new thermostat. If you can access your control board at the HVAC system (probably in attic or crawl space) you might be able to see where the wires connect and what letter each color is then match them up correctly. Everyone may have different color wires so what’s important is if you have a W wire for example that you connect that to W on the new thermostat.
So living in a Lennar home which is an Amazon home this seems like a way to join the house together while having the familiar wiring of Honeywell for the technicians. Instead of T6’s they can buy a few hundred thousand of these
After installing, I removed the jumper wire, since I have a heat pump I wired the white wire that was previously to my aux and now to the W2 or Aux on the new Amazon thermostat, when setting the heat function, my temperature goes down..any help would be much appreciated
Absolutely! I actually made a separate video for that exact thing and I use it every day in my house with no issues whatsoever. Check out my other video on installing 2 of these.
I only have two wires plus the c wire 1 yellow wire going into w one yellow wire with a red stripe going into RH and the c wire is bridge between RH and RC I have a steam furnace what a smart thermostat work with that
When you say that you turned the power off before touching the wires, Do you mean powering off the existing panel or do you mean turning off a switch at the circuit breaker ?
Good question. In my breaker box I had one labeled as A/C so that’s what I turned off. It should be low voltage anyway but turn off anything in your breaker labeled AC or Heat or furnace or Heat Pump. Leave the old thermostat on the wall so you can see it turned off. Keep in mind your old thermostat may have batteries in it so remove those first so when the power actually gets turned off at the breaker the thermostat will power it off. If the batteries are still in it then it might not turn off letting you know you cut the power. Hope that helps.
Hi, I have the same settings as your, just want to check that since your old system didn't have C-wire it didn't require one for you? I am asking this since most compatability tool indicate that a C wire is needed for smart thermostats. Thanks for the help
I wired mine up exactly the same way this gentleman did and I got nothing on the screen at all I made sure power was turned back on old thermostat works fine
Do you have a c wire? That’s what supplies the power. Another viewer said his c wire was disconnected from the breaker box because his old thermostat used batteries for power.
@@lookwhatifoundmedia the old thermostat didn’t it used a red jumper wire between R and R2 and it also had batteries so not sure. Actually the thermostat you took off is almost identical to the one that I took off so I will set up the same way it was not using the brown copper wire either
@@lerr001jr7 The colors don’t matter so much as they’re different in each system. But you need a C wire for power. Might be blue. Mine was brownish but it could be blue or a different color. If you don’t have a C wire you need the c wire adapter from Amazon.
@@RandomEarthMedia I hear what you’re saying but the old thermostat set up did not require any other adapters are connections it was just a red green yellow and white wire being used that’s it
From what I can tell if it’s set on auto it will automatically use heating or cooling to get to the desired temperature range. So if you want it to stay between 72 and 74°, the system is going to use whatever it takes to get within that range whether it be heating or cooling.
Thanks for the helpful installation on this product. Just purchased the thermostat, coming Saturday. I hope it’s going to work. I have a separate boiler for heating and a separate cooling system.
Hello! How did the install go? Did you have RH and RC at the old thermostat? My old thermostat has 'RC,' 'RH,' 'Y,' 'W,' and 'G.' When I go downstairs my to my furnace area I see the same color wires except 'RH' (at the thermostat) is going to 'C' and 'RC' (at the thermostat) is going to 'R.' Does this mean I can get a thermostat with the 'C' option? I didn't want to assume and just get it.
In my old thermostat there are two yellow wires connected to the same terminal, one of them come from the group with other colors (red, green, white),,, the other yellow come from other site what I have to do whit this?, , how should they be connected to this one from amazon?
Any idea if what could cause my thermostat keep restarting like every 5 minutes. My own thermostats got a battery so there is a tuck away white wire I assume that would be the C wire. And my blue wire is actually in W section. I did not use the jumper. Everything was fine until I used the heat fan on mode which making mine keep reboosting. Any suggestion on would I could do
I just bought this one after my thermostat stopped working . I do have a jumper blue that was in the rh and r holding a red wire as well . How would I install that ? I have heating and air in the same unit .
I believe you can do this but honestly it seemed a bit confusing in the app for scheduling things and setting up scenarios like that but I think you can if you can figure it out. You can also use voice commands like Alexa set thermostat to 70 degrees or Alexa sex thermostat to heat.
I bought one when it first came out easy to install but had to add a c wire from the furnace the old thermostat was battery operated so didn’t need a c wire so there was only 4 wire from the furnace but furnace has a c wire terminal but after that it was easy I didn’t want to use the c wire adapter, thermostat works really good with the app I like it but some people think it looks to basic for them because it doesn’t have a screen saver on it or led screen but that’s why you use your app I think it’s a great buy for $60.
I have 15v from R to C at the thermostat. On the furnace I have 28v from R to C. I know that's why my unit won't power on but where am I losing the voltage?
So if we installed this at our cabin which is in a different town, could I turn the heat up or down from my phone app? (Say like a before we would get there) I guess I am asking, how far away can I do this?
Absolutely! As long as the thermostat is connected to wifi in your cabin you’ll be able to access it from your phone from anywhere and see the current temperature in the cabin and adjust it as you want.
Both of my old thermostats used the jumper but it was not needed on the new Amazon thermostat. When that little blue plastic piece is slid up, that automatically creates the jumper.
I just got mine today. I have an old A/C control but I already had it installed C-wire by a tech. Let's see if goes with it. Thanks for the installation video.
If you mean can you set a temperature and it’ll turn heat or A/C on as needed to keep that temperature, then yes. However, when using the AUTO feature, it only allows a minimum 3 degree range. Example: 67-70 or 70-73. You can’t set it on 72 and expect it to stay on 72. It’ll only allow that small 3 degree range. Hope that answers your question.
It is compatile as soon as you have a C wire (common wire) if not, you need to call a contracto to run a C wire from your heating system to the thermostat end
The colors will vary from system to system so I can’t specifically know what letter your blue wire corresponds with. On your old thermostat, which letter was the blue wire attached to? That should be where you put it on the new thermostat.
Installation of the Amazon thermostat was easy. The thermostat has one big drawback for me that's unable to change its deadband. I'd like to turn my AC on let say at 82 and turn it off at 79. Amazon thermostat can't do it. It's firmware seems to programmed to have only 1°F difference between turning on and off. It turns AC or heater too often. Not good at all.
That’s how it worked on my system but that won’t be the same for all of them. Although you most likely don’t need the jumper you may have some other wires that need to be moved around. I know someone who just installed the same thermostat and they were having an issue with the heat pump on their system not working correctly. Amazon support actually said to move I believe it was the W wire to the O/B connection on the thermostat which fixed the issue. But to specifically answer your question, if you have that red jumper wire, you should not need it. But there are other things to consider besides that as well.
@@lookwhatifoundmedia thanks for the reply. My current system has a Green, White, Red, Yellow, and jumper from RC to RH. House was built in 2005 so hopefully it’s as simply as your set up was. I will be installing this within the next few days and will update with my results. 🤞🏻
I'd like to piggy back off of this question. My tempstar system installed this year, has 4 wires at the t-stat, 1 red for R, 1 blue for Y, 1 green for G, and 1 white for W. My old honeywell has the metal jumper from R to Rc but this new thermostat says its not required. However, when I install it according to the instructions, it does not power my ac. Should I install the jumper with this new thermostat? It does not specify when the jumper would be required. TIA!
It sounds to me like you're missing the C (Common) Wire which provides power to the thermostat. Mine had a C-Wire (brownish color). If you don't have a C Wire, you need to order the version that includes the C-Wire adapter. I think you're fine not using the red jumper and only connecting to R with your Red wire but if you don't have a C-Wire for power, it's not going to work.
So good news, I installed my thermostat. I had to connect the c wire to my furnace and then to the thermostat. It was already ran through the wall so that was easy. I did not use the jumper that was installed in my previous system. I plugged the red wire to R and left the blue latch closed. Both heat and ac work just fine. Thanks for your help!
C-wire requirement is just a cheap-out by Amazon. If you don't have a C-wire, just buy a different smart thermostat, because to install the adapter, you will often need a professional because the wiring does not color coordinate like you would think.
do you need c-wire adapter or can you just move g wire to c position and jumper y and g wires. one description says fan will only come on in ac mode and not heat mode. also what is the diff between heat pump and other heating . i have a gas heat unit with a blower , is that a heat pump
Unfortunately I do not know the answer to your questions regarding the wiring. However, it sounds like you have a gas furnace, not a heat pump. I have natural gas heating in my home so this is not a heat pump and I had absolutely zero issues with this thermostat. But I also have a C wire so if you don’t have that you might need to get the thermostat with The C wire adapter. I don’t know if you can just move another wire around in place of that.
HELP! i connect everything just like the video and my amazon thermostat doesnt turn on, i also have the jumper of red cables the only diffeence is that i dont have the copper cable, and my last thermostat was a Emerson
Interesting. I have one with (If I remember correctly?) 7 wires and they discontinued the thermostat. (not that it ever worked well in the first place) I've been trying to figure out what to replace it with. (Gas furnace) Old (dead) one is a Honeywell also. Just did the compatibility test on Amazon. Wires are W Y G O R B C. It says no. I did look up what the letters mean and it says O and B is for Reversing valve for Heat Pump systems. Since I do not have a heat pump can I just tape that those off? This is the only thermostat in the house that has this many wires (and the only one that never worked correctly)
I also have gas heat (no heat pump) and don’t use O/B at all. I don’t even have that wire. You may be ok taping it off but I don’t know for sure. Might be worth trying.
If you don’t use a c adapter will Alexa still work I had a electrician tell me Alexa would not work unless there was a c adapter I wanted to see if anyone any experience with this? Thank you!
I replaced my Honeywell with this Alexa model. My Honeywell did use the jumper between the reds, but all other connectors were the same, so its a very typical setup, for a newer built home. When I powered up and configured the Alexa, and set it on cool (blue snowflake), air would blow, but no coolness to it. I let it run for about an hour, since it was a hot evening and the ductwork probably warmed. I watched the temperature rise a few more degrees before removing the Alexa, and putting the Honeywell back on. Anyone else experience that?
You can give each thermostat a specific name in the Alexa app and be able to control them individually. When you open the Amazon Alexa app you’ll see them listed and can select which one to open. And by naming each one separately you can speak that name to your Alexa device to control it.
For those who have a Honeywell thermostat already: you may save a lot of time installing the hardware. My Honeywell thermostat has the exact same wire connector, which makes my installation extremely easy. Just need to pull the old one out and plug the amazon one in, took me 10 seconds.

Do you have a W wire? If so, try moving it to O/B. That’s what a tech told me for heat pump systems.
Any thoughts on using this thermostat with a dual zone system? Specially if you can ask "Alexa raise upstairs temp to 73" for example?
Absolutely! I actually made a separate video for that exact thing and I use it every day in my house with no issues whatsoever. Check out my other video on installing 2 of these.
Thank u for your response . I don't think it is the fuse because the old honeywell thermostat is working fine
Do you have a C wire for power?
I only have two wires plus the c wire 1 yellow wire going into w one yellow wire with a red stripe going into RH and the c wire is bridge between RH and RC I have a steam furnace what a smart thermostat work with that
Yes l think l have a c wire but by the way how do you know if you have c wire or not. How does c wire look like.
You need to take a picture of your wires while they’re still connected to the old thermostat so you can how they’re labeled.
You need to trace the wires from the thermostat to the system, and see if you have one of the wires from the thermostat connected to the C terminal.
I have a orange wire that goes below A and the AC doest work
Hi, I have the same settings as your, just want to check that since your old system didn't have C-wire it didn't require one for you? I am asking this since most compatability tool indicate that a C wire is needed for smart thermostats. Thanks for the help
My old thermostat did have a C wire. I connected the C wire to the new thermostat.
I just ordered one. Its going for $47 right now on Amazon.
@@RandomEarthMedia I hear what you’re saying but the old thermostat set up did not require any other adapters are connections it was just a red green yellow and white wire being used that’s it
I can’t get my heat pump to turn off
If you want to set it to auto, can you keep the temp between 72-74 without using the heat?
From what I can tell if it’s set on auto it will automatically use heating or cooling to get to the desired temperature range. So if you want it to stay between 72 and 74°, the system is going to use whatever it takes to get within that range whether it be heating or cooling.
having a problem finding the option set the reversing valve. I have heat when it should be cooling
good presentation, easy to follow and thorough, now I will try to install mine.
Thanks for the helpful installation on this product. Just purchased the thermostat, coming Saturday. I hope it’s going to work. I have a separate boiler for heating and a separate cooling system.
Hello! How did the install go? Did you have RH and RC at the old thermostat?
My old thermostat has 'RC,' 'RH,' 'Y,' 'W,' and 'G.'
When I go downstairs my to my furnace area I see the same color wires except 'RH' (at the thermostat) is going to 'C' and 'RC' (at the thermostat) is going to 'R.'
Does this mean I can get a thermostat with the 'C' option?
You shouldn’t need the jumper. The new new thermostat has a built in jumper by sliding the plastic piece up as shown in my video. Hope that helps.
What are the routine commands like, can you have something like “Alexa, goodnight” and it will go to a desired temp?
So, the Alexa thermostat doesn't need the jumper wire even if mine has a jumper?
Both of my old thermostats used the jumper but it was not needed on the new Amazon thermostat. When that little blue plastic piece is slid up, that automatically creates the jumper.
I am installing mine can you help me
I just got mine today. I have an old A/C control but I already had it installed C-wire by a tech. Let's see if goes with it. Thanks for the installation video.
Illinois, Comed 6$, Nicor free if I remember correctly. Check you utility for deals. I have separate garage heat so it worked out well.
Excellent video walkthrough. Thank you.
Is there a “hold” temperature setting feature for the thermostat?
If you mean can you set a temperature and it’ll turn heat or A/C on as needed to keep that temperature, then yes. However, when using the AUTO feature, it only allows a minimum 3 degree range. Example: 67-70 or 70-73. You can’t set it on 72 and expect it to stay on 72. It’ll only allow that small 3 degree range. Hope that answers your question.
Nicely done sir.. I liked,, shared and subscribed..
I like this but are they going to sell this to Google and let them totally mess up the system like happened with Nest?
Just installed this in my system (heat pump) but it only blows hot air. Even in cooling mode it blows hot air.
Looks a great product which would suit my system perfectly but it is not available in Australia.
Will this video work for heat only thermostats?
It’s hard to say. Please check the compatibility checker on the Amazon website to be sure.
It is compatile as soon as you have a C wire (common wire) if not, you need to call a contracto to run a C wire from your heating system to the thermostat end
Does a C wire prevent or enable the thermostat to have power?
I am not able to see Amazon thermostat in Alex app
Can this be used if you only have heat and no central air unit?
Yes, Tim. No problem...
Can the thermostat be locked so my kids can't change the temp????
Not that I know of. I don’t see any options for that.
Hi
Im confused i bought the one without a c wire.where can i put the blue wire?
The colors will vary from system to system so I can’t specifically know what letter your blue wire corresponds with. On your old thermostat, which letter was the blue wire attached to? That should be where you put it on the new thermostat.
Installation of the Amazon thermostat was easy. The thermostat has one big drawback for me that's unable to change its deadband. I'd like to turn my AC on let say at 82 and turn it off at 79. Amazon thermostat can't do it. It's firmware seems to programmed to have only 1°F difference between turning on and off. It turns AC or heater too often. Not good at all.
So since I have a jumper going from RH to RC and only one red wire in RC, I don’t need to reuse the jumper? R will run both heat and cooling?
I received mine today so this Will help in my setup. Thank you.
The green wire went to the c so I don’t have anything plugged into the g. Seems to work OK but who knows what might go wrong later
do you need c-wire adapter or can you just move g wire to c position and jumper y and g wires. one description says fan will only come on in ac mode and not heat mode. also what is the diff between heat pump and other heating . i have a gas heat unit with a blower , is that a heat pump
Thank you!
Does this thermostat have "Temperature Swing" aka "Differential Temperature"? and if yes then how much?
No it doesn’t and I returned it for that very reason. It short cycles like crazy!
@@jaeglo I don't know why smart thermostats in this age aren't smart enough to let us input customizable swing temperature points
I'm so happy you're looks just like mines hope I don't have trouble with it thanks for the video
Just not seeing any lights come on on mine. No power it appears
Anyone know if it’s about the same with LUX 500? I’m replacing that.
Can I control it by just phone?
Absolutely. I control mine by phone 99% of the time. I rarely touch the actual thermostat.
Did you figured out what was the problem?......mine ac doesn't start at all
@@mrfuel1866 I replaced that one, and the new one is working fine.
Thank you so much you are so helpful
How do I take it off. I messed up the wiring and don’t wanna snap it off the wall
It’ll pull off with some force. It snaps on pretty hard but just pull straight off and I’ll unsnap.
How does it work if you have multiple ones throughout the home? Can you control each one?
You can give each thermostat a specific name in the Alexa app and be able to control them individually. When you open the Amazon Alexa app you’ll see them listed and can select which one to open. And by naming each one separately you can speak that name to your Alexa device to control it.
I really appreciate the video! Thank you!
Thanks for the info. Am sold.
Great overview and installation.
Thanks for watching. Hope my video helped!
