AoF - CEO Message (Q3 2024)

Welcome everyone to the latest quarterly update on the activities of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance (AoF).
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary and Financial Research (HKIMR). The HKIMR was established by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in 1999 to conduct monetary and financial research that are of strategic importance to Hong Kong and the Asia region. With the establishment of the AoF in June 2019, the HKIMR became the research arm of the AoF and its remit was expanded to include applied finance research in cross-sectoral areas.
Thanks to the support of our Directors, Advisers, staff, and our dynamic networks, today, the HKIMR is a well-respected and established name among the international finance community. As a research institution, it has accumulated a repository of over 600 working papers, many of which are published in top-tier journals and are frequently cited, and it has published 14 applied research reports since 2019. Through its visiting scholar programmes, the HKIMR have also welcomed hundreds of international scholars over the years that have fostered a rich exchange of ideas. It has been a truly amazing journey. Looking ahead, we plan to continue our commitment to cutting-edge research, dissemination of knowledge, and consolidating Hong Kong's status as a leading international financial centre.
Switching to our Financial Leaders Programme (FLP) Our 2024 Programme has progressed well on the quarter. In addition to a number of interactive dialogues with financial leaders in Hong Kong, a delegation of participants from across three FLP cohorts completed an overseas field trip to ASEAN in late September. The trip provided an enriching experience for our future financial leaders, as they met with local corporates to discuss a wide range of issues related to enhancing cooperation between Hong Kong and ASEAN. On a related note, application for the 2025 Programme will open in coming weeks, so watch this space!
In Q3, we welcomed the latest joiners to the AoF family at a New Members’ Gathering. We also successfully launched a new Brown-Bag Lunch series where prominent speakers are invited to speak on the most topical issues in our industry.
Following the publication of our two Applied Research Reports on Decentralised Finance (DeFi) and The Metaverse, we hosted a series of events to share our findings with a wide range of audience, from high-school students to industry experts. In addition, we held several high-level seminars with the IMF, BIS, ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office, and the Dubai Financial Services Authority on a number of key global macro topics. There are a number of large-scale events in the pipeline, including the Annual flagship China Conference this month, and the Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit in November.
