Because of Germany (they killed about 6 million Poles, including 3 million Polish Jews - only during 2WW) and other countries that attacked Poland and killed their inhabitants, Russia occupied Poland from 2WW to 1991 and cut this country from the world.
If you have been a country that has been attacked so many times and those who attacked you always wanted to destroy your culture, your language, your national identity, and the allies who promised help and support betrayed you as usual, the level of trust in others will be at a low level. The Poles have been through many traumas and tragedies, too many.
