One a.i companion that I really like is Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite, not only is she genuinely delightful to travel with, but she also doesn't get in the way when a fight happens. She also finds ways to make herself useful like opening locked doors with lock picks and tossing things like first aid kits, ammunition and bottles of salt when you need them. She can also open tears to help in a fight as well.

What I hate is when my AI companion immediately forgets where we just came from. I mostly get this from Skyrim. I'll have Lydia, Marcurio, or whoever I decided to bring on my magical journey. We'll go in a cave successfully kill everything, loot the entire place, and come out. My companion will then immediately say, "hey look a cave. I wonder what's inside?"

i think one of the absolute best examples of properly handling the walking speed issue with allies is ghost of tsushima. in that game, the ai actually matches the player speed, meaning that if you walk, they walk, if you sprint, they sprint, and when there is a forced walking section, both you and the npc walk together. They will even summon their own mount if you summon yours. it's honestly so satisfying

    • @terrabits
      @terrabits ปีที่แล้ว +38

In Yakuza Zero (and other games on the series, I presume), when you have to follow a NPC, you can simple hold R2. No need to steer, wait or run to catch up. Releasing R2 let's you free roam again. Was surprised when I saw it, it's a simple but nice feature. Also, pretty much everybody moves at the same speed when following you, so no need to wait for them too.

I've lost a number of games due to an ai companion wandering right into my attack, then proceeding to turn on me and help the enemies beat me to a pulp when it's there fault they decided to walk between my weapon and the enemy, or run into a hoard of enemies making it impossible to spot them as I swing madly for survival...

On the plus side, it sometimes it works out kind of hilariously, when said huge rival is on the far side of their space from you, several turns away even if you wanted to send reinforcements, making your declaration of war is basically an empty gesture. They're thrilled enough at the prospect to sweeten the deal with cash and technologies, and you don't actually have to do anything if you don't want to.

You can't really get too far ahead, fall too far behind, or wander off without the fog taking you down. (The monkey taking a circuitous route could be its own problem.) But when you get to the end, the circle of no fog runs into a place with no fog, so you run into it, glad to be free... but the monkey urges you to come back to her so she can finally go where you just were.

#2 goes along with one of my earliest memories in video games. When I was a kid playing FFVII at a friend's house, the moment (spoiler alert) when Aerith got murdered, I panicked, thinking all her equipment was gone forever. Luckily you do get it back but, I mean, to be fair, that cutscene does show her materia falling off and sinking into a seemingly bottomless pool of water, so what was child-me supposed to think??
I felt guilty when I realized that I pretty much valued her equipment more than her actual life.

Kingdoms of Amalur does the AI walking speed thing pretty okay for the most part. They just make them run full tilt wherever you need to go and have you chase after them. The trouble is when they get themselves killed and force you to reload a save because they weren't supposed to die and make you fail the quest.

She stays out the way, and I don't have to protect her from being kidnapped or killed. She throws me stuff when I'm low on health, salt, or ammo, and she opens up tears for stuff I need. I also don't mind her dialogue with Booker. It's one of the few games with a voiced protagonist that doesn't make me want to stab my eardrums out.

I was clearing out the guard towers for him and near the end he got way ahead of me on one run and kept getting killed before I could get there. The autosave was at a bad point, so I actually had to go back a bit earlier so I could keep him alive. When you're helping that camp in High Fulgen (just as you enter Alabastra) get all its people back, one woman in a cave can get killed. You also technically fail the whole quest if you got everyone back, but then someone dies in the final battle against the Tuatha. So yeah, NPCs can definitely die, but it's more down to bad timing and such than the game being difficult. I still play on the original hard difficulty, because the new Very Hard difficulty is bullshit. All they did was make enemies so damage spongy that weapons are nearly broken after just even a bit of fighting and it's not fun. I read somewhere about the reasoning for that walk/run speed. IIRC, the speed in between walk/run is so if you get stuck or wander off to the side a little they don't get so far away that you can't catch up. That they also implement a stop/wait to alleviate that speed problem but sometimes the NPC can get stuck. So it's easier to just go with a slower speed. But ultimately it's a choice between annoy people with the speed or risk even greater headaches if they don't.

Yes, I am talking about Donald Duck in Kingdom Hearts. How'd you guess?

If some companions can’t seem to follow you close enough, there are others who will follow you entirely TOO closely and it just looks weird when you start sprinting and they are 2 feet behind you, somehow not getting their shins ruined by your battle hardened boots.

Anska in High Gate Ruins. Skyrim companions are already quite a ride, but that woman is constantly breathing down my neck, pushing me onto traps, and in general trying to stand inside me. Seriously, give me some space! Five feet back, you pyromaniac!

Happens in both Fallout and Skyrim - break stealth when you're not discovered yet. Enemies get slightly alert, and your followers suddenly decide to rush them, even though you haven't been found yet. Or maybe you want to escape and hide again, and yet they're not paying attention to you being in stealth mode still.

Judgy companions can be great if they're sufficiently likable and well written though. My doing the right thing in Disco Elysium was about 10% out of any genuine moral feeling and 90% so I wouldn't disappoint Kim Kitsuragi, the greatest sidekick in gaming history

Definitely Jane. We all know she's the secret final boss, so loading her up with the worst equipment right before her inevitable betrayal will make that fight way easier.

NPCs disappearing with their gear is definitely the most annoying thing. I’m always glad when a walkthrough warns you ahead of time to remove equipment from an NPC that’s about to leave the party.

I find it annoying when your companion scolds you for doing things they ignore other NPCs doing or, the hypocrisy, do themselves. So many times a Skyrim companion has told me to “watch what you’re doing” because I slightly nudged a moveable object then pathed into them self and send it flying without comment.

Mitsuru in Persona 3 Fes. Set her to heal/support hoping she'll actually use her healing abilities when you need it, but instead she just spams Marin Karin (a spell used to charm enemies that almost never works).

I couldn't help but notice that, for number 7, pretty much every single clip was them being in one spot and you strafing around shooting them as you passed. All but one even had them on screen the entire time.
So yes, in that case, it definitely is your fault 😛
It did genuinely used to be a major problem though, in the early days of AI companions.

If you think AI spoiling the puzzle is bad, how about AI giving you a faulty hint.
In Jedi Fallen Order there’s a puzzle on Zeffo infamous for having a “hint” that actively misdirects players.
“Maybe we can use the lids to keep the fires lit” Cal says… while next to a waterfall… so everyone tries to line up the orbs for a force push to keep the fires lit…
When the actual solution is to carry them over to a different area… and the lids are completely irrelevant.

tbh i hate it when an Ai companion just up and dies via walking into obvious traps. then you have to reload a previous save or try and carry all the loot they left. like in elder scrolls, they walk right into tripwires, releasing deadly maces, or falling logs, rocks or swinging ax traps in skyrim or in those wall smashing ones in oblivion.

Shadow of War: your recruited orc captains are way too weak/constantly betraying you.
Sorry I’ll say it, the Nemesis system was tuned to have your captains betray you or get killed way too often. They might have tuned it down later, but I definitely remember having to face 4 captains with 1 betrayal, 1 blood brothers of the betrayer, and 1 dead by ambush of an enemy captain.
How about letting me have some control instead of screwing me over with RNG?

The "walk faster than your walking speed but slower than your running speed" is pretty self explanatory though, it's so you can catch up if you dawdle but not force you to walk the entire way. Optimally they'd program them to match your speed but that's too much work I suppose
