- At least 15 people, including two children, were killed as tornadoes ripped across the heartland. Homes were leveled and as many as 80 people were trapped inside a collapsed gas station in Texas. NBC News’ Priscilla Thompson has more on the extent of the destruction.

Storm cellars were the norm & now most homes & businesses don't even have basements to keep building costs lower...
That's what I don't get. Why don't states that experience tornadoes require shelters? Homes should be mandated to have underground shelters built.
There was a man who immigrated from Mexico and he excavated a storm shelter inside his home that didn’t have a basement. He saved his family and many neighbors.
Gotta pay upfront or on the back end

Given how religious America is, perhaps your prayers are not working? I have never prayed and never suffered a natural disaster. Could be proof of a vengeful god, more likely proof of how geography determines weather. Try substituting prayer for building stone houses, maybe that would be more effective?
Try to imagine the time and money being spent by insurance companies in their efforts to find ways to avoid covering the property damage costs.
Meanwhile, way out west, insurance companies are canceling coverage for homes that didn't even see a fire except as a distant glow in the sky.

Absolutely, but unfortunately money is more important to corporations than human life. They make it impossible for a average income family to afford shelter, let alone people with even lower income. They also build homes with the lowest quality materials now days, but charge an arm and a leg for it. Brick homes are for the rich, everyone else gets siding or mobile homes. It's do sad how greed has taken over society.

@@ilsavv Aw, don't sell subsurface walls short when it comes to heating the place-- or, keeping it cool. You can put in skylights, or just put earthen berms around the walls. Even just having a livable basement helps, as others have nored.

I'm so sorry to hear what you are all going through. I'm in New Zealand, we only started having very small tornadoes, only 2 in 5 years. But I had a nightmare about what you might be going through.

If you live in a tornado prone area you should definitely have a storm shelter.
Where
every time severe weather is reported without the mention of global warming it effectively avoids any proactive action being taken, nbc. we need a new system because insurance is not a viable business model any longer. if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
As an Atmospheric Physicist with the National Weather Service, (retired) I have noticed that as well. The problem is many reporters just don’t understand Global Warming. I still call it Global Warming because that’s what it is.
The TV meteorologists who do mention global warming get death threats from the public. It’s pretty unnerving to get death threats when people can find out where you live and you worry about your family. Meteorologists are always the least paid TV broadcaster, even below the sports reporter. So they can’t afford the home security system their colleagues often can.
Therefore it’s going to continue to get worse and the right wing side of the spectrum will continue to deny Global Warming and instead say it’s God’s judgement of the USA and a sign of the end times instead of acknowledging what we’ve told everyone for 40 years that this was what was going g to happen. It will continue to get worse.

The Dome home- is the most disaster resistant building that can be built at a reasonable price. A wind of 250 MPH (used in FEMA 361) pushes with a pressure of 300 pounds per square foot. If the wind speed increases to 300 miles per hour the pressure increases to 404 pounds per square foot (psf). Wind speed of 300 MPH is considered maximum for a tornado. A Force 5 tornado pushes with 4 times the pressure of a Force 5 hurricane. No normal building can withstand that much pressure. Many Monolithic Domes are buried up to 30 feet deep. They must withstand pressured up to 1 ton per square foot (2000 psf). The fact is, Dome home is not flat and therefore never can maximum wind push against more than a small area.
Americans are getting extreme tornados and here were getting extreme heat waves, weather has been very erratic this year.

Things are escalating very fast

I woke up to sirens just today. My mom screaming to my dad,“Derek there are tornado sirens!” we turned on the news as I shivered in fear. I heard thunder,saw lightning,and branches fall to the ground, heard loud booms and crashes.Our bedroom fan that sits on the floor started slowing down, then starting back up again, along with the TV starting the glitch. We continue watching the news for about a good 2 minutes of so , then boom all the lights turn off and currently still aren’t on after the storm had passed. I’m assuming it’s probably on account of a branch falling on electrical wires. Me and my mom scurried to find our phone in pitch darkness, turned on our flashlights and stayed in the living room. I’m not a Christian or a prayer, I don’t go to church anymore like I used to. But this time something in me felt like I really needed to pray. As I prayed I noticed my sister and mom fell asleep on the couch. My dad was also sleeping in my parents room. I ended up getting really tired and ended up falling asleep as well. Luckily we woke up safe and sound. Really traumatic and scary considering it was my first tornado in YEARS.
