I feel like Sydney is like the New York City of Australia. It's the most famous city in the country, therefor it's where all the tourists go, which means you've got many events that happen there. But it also means that traffic is ridiculous and property/hotel/general amenity prices are through the roof. This is (somewhat) circumvented by the fact that as the largest city in the country, it's where most of the jobs are found, too. You probably have to have some sort of degree to get into most of them, and most of them (while paying over national average) probably still don't pay enough to live comfortably in a city such as itself. Having said that, the only difference between Sydney and New York City from what I can tell (other than being in two different countries) is that Sydney is a good place to go on vacation to, but not to live in. New York City is bad to go on vacation to, and bad to live in as well due to excessive crime rates
