Can be from any political party. Or even the governor can allow without election if a seat is vacanct.

After resignation of an mla, if he is a minister, he can remain minister till the period of 6 months, in which he can either fight election again and win Election or get nominated by the governor...

Actually Chief Minister Has almost the same powers as The Prime minister with respect to the Governor.
Also, UPSC is a Union exam, and if you see the PYQ, there is rarely any question on CM. You can read the 3 page chapter on Chief Minister in Laxmikant and it would suffice.
