  • In today's video I talk about the extra things I've trained my Seeing Eye Dog to do since leaving class. I've trained him to do things that serve a purpose, and he and I both love it. Training is one of Zenith's favorite things to do!
    Training videos I used:
    0. Targeting- • How I train my Guide D...
    1. Give paw- • How to Teach Give Paw,...
    2. Hind end awareness- • Body Awareness Exercises
    3. Loose lead walking / heeling- • Video
    4. Deep pressure therapy (DPT)- • Video (I did this over my legs like she does in the first half of the video, but while sitting on the floor instead of on a chair)
    5. Retrievals- • Video

Great job. I’ve just had my one year anniversary with my guide dog. I got her from Guide Dogs For The Blind, and she has no trouble walking backwards, I thought they automatically train them to do that for traffic checks? I know every school has a little bit of a difference, and I think sometimes it also has to do with their puppy raisers. I’m really blessed because Reenie a black Labrador is so excellent at healing as well. Now we are starting to work on retrieving things. Great idea about learning how to catch your hat for you in the wind! Keep the videos coming I’m enjoying them

Kay oh my gosh, this video literally came at the perfect time for me. I am applying for my first Guide Dog and my school does teach extra teasks like balance work, deep pressure therapy, and but you’re only eligible to receive a dog who already know those things if you’re a veteran which I’m not. So I was just saying to my grandma house I hope they can give me the basics I needed to teach my dog on my own. Behind and awareness thing sounded really useful skill And that must’ve been so scary that he got attacked, I’m glad he’s OK now and that you didn’t get hurt. And who knows, it sounds like that maybe did save his life.

Marissa Miranda i’ve encountered the same problem, there is another service dog organization local to me that teaches the tasks I was looking for, but they also don’t work with blind individuals. I’m hoping that since the school I am applying to does teach them for veterans, the trainers will at least be willing to give me the basics of like what a good place to start would be four teaching my dog those skills. I’m actually not looking for them for psychiatric reasons, but for physical ones some of which are kind of like what K.. described. The other reason I was thinking that it would be hard for me to get the trainers to show me how to teach task like that is that I don’t really have medical diagnosis is pacifically related to them. Which is why as you said, cave video help me realize that training on your own isn’t bad and I if you learn how to you can do so successfully.
