Hi J, it seems that invoking a programmable plc still requires buying a bunch of resistors that need to be wired in, regardless of hardwire contactors or programmable plc. Why not use 3 PTC's (or a resetable thermal fuse) and skip the PLC? it appears that there are X and y class PTC's. How much does it cost, did you pay, to buy the electrical and hydraulic famic software? It would be entertaining and educational to see you work through adjusting the excitation on the field (with mechanical rotor input) for the purpose of adjusting a generator output.
Oh yes there are many more ways to skin this cat besides regular resistors ... ever heard of a liquid starter? Basically it's an electrolytic solution and as a contact is pulled in an out of it it changes resistance. As you mentioned cost is the primary concern for any application!
