My First BDR! Riding Over The Coast Range and Motorcycle Camping: Oregon BDR Route 6, Day 1

  • My first full-length (unofficial) Backcountry Discovery Route adventure was an amazing one! Two friends and I set out to tackle Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route 6, which runs from Coos Bay/Reedsport Oregon all the way over the Oregon Coast Range and the Oregon Cascades to Crescent Lake, Oregon. OBDR Route 6 is short enough to do in a few days, and that's exactly what we set out to do on this trip.
Here on day 1, we meet up as a group and head out from my house in Albany, Oregon down the freeway, through Drain and Elkton, Oregon, and finally to the start (technically the end) of Oregon Back Country Discovery Route 6 just south of Reedsport, Oregon. From there, we headed up into the wilderness and through the Elliot State Forest, before settling down at a convenient logging landing for an evening of motorcycle camping, dinner, campfire, beverages and a Mr. Puff Puff.
Multi-day motocamping trips like this are amazing, especially when you get to explore awesome areas like the OBDR route 6 with good friends. Thanks for watching this ADV riding and moto camping adventure!

When I found your videos last year, I bought a CRF250L Rally. Then I saw your moto camping videos and the lightbulb went on and I said, "Oh my God, that is what is missing in my life!" I did some camping with the Rally, but this year I bought an Africa Twin. Thank you for sharing your journey! It pushed me to start my own adventures.
My go-to camp supper has been a package of Lipton "Extra Noodle" chicken soup with a pouch of the StarKist chicken breast. I got a case (12) of them through Amazon and they are the perfect Jetboil meal. The pouches keep well and don't take up much space.
And Beards...last time I camped it dipped below freezing overnight and I had heated up two small cans of Beanee Weenee over the campfire. Lets just say that my sleeping bag stayed pretty warm that night...

I don't doubt that, Texas is a terrible State for dualsports/adventure bikes. No decent public land and the geography is boring.

Whether it's called the BCDR or BDR, that is some beautiful riding, so far. Locals must feel like there's no else on the road so they assume it's all for them. Really appreciate your more-distant campsite panorama shots as it helps put the site and ambience in context. Carry on!

I really enjoyed how you included the entire day’s itinerary- camp steps - etcetera - makes one feel like they were along for the ride - a nice vicarious road trip for those of us who are still doing the 8-5 days. The “Which bike are you riding” comments cracked me up but I did have the same question, which of course you answered. Curious about how long it takes you to edit your videos - seems like a cool way to spend your work life - glad you were able to make it work!

There is a more fun way to get to Reedsport from Eugene/I5: Crow-Alma-Oxbow Road- Smith River Rd. If you aren't pressed for time. You can make it more "adventurous" by heading to Walton then south at Whittaker Creek, you can ride over Roman Nose, hit up Kentucky Falls, then head on to Reedsport.

I ran route 6 in the summer of 2020 just a couple weeks before the horrific fires that broke out on Labor day. For me personally, route 6 was a blast. Rode from Crescent Lake over to the coast then spent a couple days riding around the southern Oregon coast before returning to central Oregon on route 6. Even though the return trip was on the same route it was a totally different experience. Glad you were able to get out and make the trip!
