Something I want to make clear, I made this video when they had about 1 million members, they now have almost 9 million members and have completely changed their moderation team. The group has grown almost nine times its original size. I do not recognize it anymore. I do not recognize the group that at one point, recommended that I take a good look at securities that had potential like ICLN prior to the election. It now is a group of people, screaming about one stock, in this diamond hands never sell ever ever ever way... that is insane to me.
in this video, I mentioned that I do not always agree with them on everything. but I feel the need to say at this point in time, that this is not the group that I remember going to anymore. I don't think any group can grow it's size 900% in a week and retain it's initial characteristics. this appears to be a shell of its former self.

Looking back, I don't think the sub just 'changed' in the innocent way that you are implying. I think they got excited when they gained wide support and realised that even if GME was a meme stock amounting to a Ponzi scheme, as long as they got in early, they could be the scammers. DFV and every other person who got in early absolutely knew what they were doing when they deleted posts about GME losses, or posts criticising the sub, and the only reason it 'appears to be a shell of its former self' is because its original self decided to turn itself into a scam site. I appreciate your comment, but in retrospect I think you gave a little too much charitability to the 'OG' WSB.

Shorting a company doesn't affect the operations of a business. A company's shares represent ownership in the business and that ownership is traded on an exchange. Trading shares on an exchange has absolutely no effect on a companies revenues or profitability. The only ones who got hurt during the short squeeze are the ones who shorted gamestop most likely banks, hedge funds, or professional traders. It's funny because the professionals got burned lol

One thing that's still a bit inaccurate here - the attention on GME didn't actually start with "hey, this is way over shorted, let's fuck with the greedy hedge funds". It actually just started with a guy who was really into gaming speculating on the future of gamestop after they acquired new management and changed their business strategy. Like, they're actually changing how they operate to become more of a space to play games than just a retailer, borrowing from the success of gaming cafes and the like, as well as moving into physical games like board/tabletop/card games. As I understand it, they want to become the new "Local Game Store".
_That's_ what started this - a guy did some research, posted it online along with his _very long_ term options calls that he dumped his life savings into, some called him a retard for a couple months while some actually looked into his research and agreed and bought in, those modest increases made for large gains on his calls, he doubled down, it turned into a meme, people started buying, the hedges started freaking out, and _then_ the fact it was shorted at 130% of its market cap became widely realized and people started tripling down just to spite the hedge funds as they started to blatantly manipulate the price to save their asses.
Just wanted to point this out because even framing it as "a bunch of kids called out greedy hedge funds for being shitty" is still a favorable interpretation for the hedge funds. It started as someone literally doing what they always tell you you're supposed to do - stick to businesses you know, do your own market research, and make informed decisions. What spooked the institutional investors is that this generally bullshit advice finally actually worked for someone who wasn't already "in the club".

Excellent post. Significantly better than the original video. However I think someone should mention that the backlash against WallStreetBets isn't just "hating" on the independent speculator, or some kind of generational vendetta.
Rather, that suspicious price activity like this is exactly what the SEC looks for when investigating potentially illegal collusion to manipulate the market.
Rossman thinks that the only way this activity is illegal is if it is coerced. But voluntary collusion would still amount to illegal market manipulation even if it is done by a larger group of smaller speculators.

Thanks again for your insights. After spending several years in the industry, and being fully aware that doing the opposite of what the neophytes are doing, will always keep me financially sound. There is a great old expression on Wall St. " bulls and bears will always get fed, pigs will always get slaughtered." Most funds have specific parameters they follow (if they are disciplined). When I had clients, my rule was the stock goes against us 8%, I don't care if it goes $2000000 the next day I bought it wrong. We sell the stock, lick our wounds and move on. Understanding your thoughts and being in agreement with 96% of those thoughts is why I am adding this for your viewers. They short the stock, they're borrowing shares which they're going to have to pay money is fees or interest on that amount of shares that they borrowed. Now the situation arises where these guys get together on these platforms and do what they're going to do, so now they're buying the stock. Now there's three sets of shares in a sense that can also be borrowed and sold short. Adding fuel to the fire. First of all this is definitely signaling guy Market top this will be the third major major correction that I've been involved .I mean major correction like 08, 2000 and 87.That said, an Institutional Trader, meaning somebody that works for Fido, Vanguard, Etc. These people get fired for a being that negligent. In the case of the hedge fund managers. if I know myself if I had money with hedge fund manager and the losses at the end of the year if you know made it where instead of me making 20% I only made 6%, I I pull my money out of the account saying this guy's a cowboy, Renegade, or flat-out, a gambler. I watch this game stop Trade I watched AMC trade. I was watching dozens of two three four hundred thousand chair tranzactions going by the time I had seen a few million million and a half share transactions go by. This is when Gamestop was you know, like three hundred bucks. Do the math. These guys are buying that much, that many options, the market makers the Brokers, they have got to go out and purchase at stock. By the way, the love the fact that you you can make fun of yourself. Yeah you're a jackass, like I'm Alex karp. keep doing what you're doing by the way you speak well. Much success. JD

This is about Options Trading. The more you learn about options, the more you can't understand how it's legal.
It is literally trading contracted shares with leveraged money you don't have and pocketing the difference. It's also how millionaires can go bankrupt overnight.

It's actually much more simple: you borrow the stock and sell it, then later when the price goes down you buy it back and return _the stock_ to whoever you borrowed it from. Instead of "buy low, sell high" you're just changing it to "sell high, buy low".

The greed and awareness goes even deeper. I'll explain
I was part of the early wave of analysts that checked out gamestop in october and realized the massive short imbalance against a not-bad company could be profitable. We bought up hundreds of thousands of shares of stock in october hoping to sit on them but also drive the price up a little, maybe a few cents.
But then an interesting thing happened.
Just as we bought up our shares, hours later, a massive number of "put" options were purchased against us. "Put" options are a type of financial instrument that is similar to shorting, it lets you profit off of downward moves and also drives the price down. It also caps losses. It's essentially shorting but with a few protections in it.
Anyway. These "put" options flooded the market and counterbalanced our share buying within hours of us buying. Someone out there with LOTS of money was ACTIVELY monitoring and FIGHTING us. They did not want the stock to go up. So it's not like they just accidentally went too far with their shorting, they KNEW exactly how far they went, but they believed they were so powerful they could fight anyone trying to buy the stock by countering them with put-options.
But we kept our shares, and we helped to spread the information of how imbalanced the shorts were. More and more buyers kept coming in. But the fighting continued. Whenever there was a price increase the was a subsequent massive order of "puts" to hammer the price back down. But things broke on january 13th. Finally all of our buying overpowered the puts and the price spiked 90% before the other side was able to cough up enough puts to reign it back in.
At that point WSB joined in full force and brought their buying power to catapult the stock to what you see today.
All this shorting isn't simply a case of just going too far, it's active manipulation of the price as evidenced by the put-buying to counteract all of our moves. But as you say, there are too many of us now with too much time to get fooled.

What I would say, as a person who was a broker briefly, you shouldn't be depending on Brokers for information ever. They are to help facilitate your transactions, maybe to educate you a bit, but I would not trust their information.
The best hot tip you'll ever get is it there are no such thing as Hot Tips. If somebody really had inside information, then using it would be illegal, and you don't want to play games with the SEC or the IRS they will eat you alive. And if it isn't real inside information, then it's no better than what you can find out yourself with a simple internet search.
I was a broker for about a year, I hated it. I love investing, I love digging for information, I hate trying to sell other people. Because a lot of what you're basing this on is risky, and I don't want to risk somebody else's money. I especially don't want to do it for a commission.
So I was a failure as a broker, but a success as an investor.
This is the investing philosophy that has served our family very well: if you use a company's products or services, and you like them, and you would buy from them again, then that is a company you should seriously consider investing in. Let me give you an example. This is how my parents taught me.
My parents gave me an Apple 2 computer in 1980, along with a single share of Apple stock. The stock certificate held with the transfer agent. At that time you could send off a check for any amount to the transfer agent and once a quarter they would take the money that people had sent in and would buy shares. You didn't gett choose the time or price, but zero transactions fees, and partial shares.
I was 10, so it's not like I was throwing down big checks. But it got me motivated out there cutting grass, finding services that I could do for the people in the neighborhood that they would pay me a dollar or two to do ( some of which would get you arrested today, a ten-year-old killing squirrels with a 22 for pecan Growers). And every week I would send off a check for what I had earned. It might be $10, it might be 20. But I was very consistent about it all the way through high school and college through the years when we thought Apple might actually go out of business, I kept throwing $25 here $50 there at it. Ironically I gave up on Apple around 2004. I stopped investing in them, but I didn't sell my shares. Today, that is by far my single largest position.
Another example, the first PC I built, I built with an Athlon processor. So I started buying AMD. And I bought AMD from 1996 until the present day. $50 a month.
It used to be free, now generally there is a small amount that you are charged, but it's a very small fee, and because you can buy partial shares, it's worth it.
For example, I've been buying Amazon for years, but I am putting $50 a month into it and I can't afford to buy full shares, but through Computershare I can buy $50 worth of Amazon a month, and I have since 2010.
You see I'm not talking about massive amounts of money, generally I have between 8 and 10 stocks that I invest in every month through either Computershare or Equiniti ( depending on whether or not they are US traded securities or ADRs). Those are my regular Investments. When I accumulate a chunk of cash, I'll use eTrade to buy a chunk of stock.
I'm 50, but without ever really having earned a huge income, I've done very very well.
Yes, big companies, major Traders, hedge funds, mutual funds, they can move the market in the short-term. And no, it's not fair, but if you ignore them, and just do the dollar cost averaging ( and that's the term you need to look up), in good companies, then you will benefit in the long term.
I buy stocks whether the market is up, down, or sideways. I have now for 40 years. Pick 8 stocks that you like, put $50 a month into them through Computershare (Intel, micron, amd, Amazon, alphabet, Pfizer, Apple, McDonald's, coke, tsmc, southern company, etc), don't look at the stock, unless there is a real good reason.
Anyone who tells you you can time the market, is a fool and they are misleading you. Choose good companies, whose products you use, and would again, and then invest in them.
I've had my ass handed to me many times. For pity sake I followed Apple from the time that Jobs was fired, until he was rehired, and it was not certain that Apple was going to stay in business at all. Same thing for AMD, buying at $60 a share and following it all the way down to around $1 a share. I bought stock in a A123, who was the battery maker for Tesla, and they flat went out of business and I lost every penny of that money.
GE has been a painful road. So has BP. I mean huge losses on both, but the win out weigh the losses, by a lot.
Crashes are painful, to watch 60-80% of your paper value go away overnight, but they're also very exciting because that mean everything just went on sale, and you look for whatever company that you still have faith in that got hurt the worst and go and start buying them.
AMD for me, has been probably the happiest story. Because I was such a fanboy for them for years, and just watch them slowly drain away. Then, lo and behold, ryzen... and all past sins were made up for, and I am as happy as I can be with that.
The point is, I'm not a doctor, I'm not a Wall Street analyst, I'm not being paid half a million a year by anyone. I've had solid but not extremely lucrative jobs my entire career, but I made a choice to live within half of my annual earnings, and the other half got invested from the time I got my first real job.
I know this is a book of a post, but you can do it too. It just takes persistence and consistency.
Don't look for a fast Buck. This GameStop thing while I have enjoyed it, was not real investing. It was my taking a gamble quite frankly. And it paid off. I can laugh about it, but I don't have any delusions that it was some Superior intellect or decision-making that led me to it. It was just a whim with some spare cash, that happened to pay off, like buying a lottery ticket.
For serious investing, see my philosophy above, also investing means 10-year Horizon minimum. If you aren't willing to leave that money in that investment for at least 10 years, and be at peace with annual variations of value of 60-80 plus percent, then you're not ready for investing.
I've seen my portfolio get cut in value on paper by 80% in a day. I called my Mom who is our family's major investor, and we just simply started strategizing who did we want to buy who was on sale. In that case, Apple, McDonald's& Dollar General.
I wish you all the best of luck, I understand the suspicions and the hatred you may feel toward Wall Street, because like I said I was a broker I understand. But it remains that investing in stock in my humble opinion is the most reliable ticket you can have to leverage the money that you earn and turn an income into wealth.

The massive shorting wasn't the main reason to buy into GME, it was RoaringKitty doing incredible DD on the Gamestop financials and believing in its value. He thought people were too much hung up on the digital/physical games thing to see the value if they could change things around. He was laughed at but kept making bank on it. Even back in July the short-selling was noted to be high but more as explanation why Gamestop was currently undervalued. WSB eventually started believing him and by then the short-selling had continued way over 100% too, which was just one more reason to make this bet and stick it to the hedge fund morons.
