I appreciate you viewing these videos so quickly and engaging with them! I kind of painted that issue with a broad brush, but yes, as we can see with government regulations today, any time the government puts artificial restrictions on the market, small businesses end up paying the price. By "pursuit of happiness," Jefferson is referring to economic freedom - to be able to do one's job free from government picking winners and losers. I'll post some videos on Jefferson's philosophy, soon.

I've got to be brutally honest with you: Not having a reasonable balance between government regulations and economic freedom is a recipe for disaster. Countries with too much economic freedom are a lot like Icarus - their economies might seem strong and prosperous at first, but sooner or later, they end up taking a long and painful fall because they flew too high. I'm not bashing anyone here - this is something I feel every American needs to know. Lack of moderation, _especially_ when it comes to economics, is asking for trouble. Does that make sense?

Thanks a bunch, Erica! Glad to hear it! I'm going to try to put out a US History video each week along with my European History videos, so I hope that some more of what I do ends up being useful to your class.

Doing a great job with the videos. I use yours in conjunction with my own as reinforcement for my US Government classes. Keep up the good work!

David Koogler Glad to hear it! I teach AP Government to students who have already had US History - most of them with me - but my goal is to be able to use these videos as resources for students who need to review this content that I don't really have class time to reinforce in the AP Gov classroom.

The East India Company had high quality Asian tea, but were near bankruptcy. American colonialist preferred lesser quality tea smuggled in by the Dutch. The EIC sold it's tea to wholesalers in England. These wholesalers were competing w/ Dutch smuggler. The Tea Act allowed the EIC to sell directly to the colonies, cutting out the middlemen, undercutting Dutch profits and saving the company from bankruptcy...and the Americans would get high quality tea more inexpensively. The Americans balked b/c they saw it as Parliamentary Sovereignty all over again. THAT'S what led to the Boston Tea Party.

The whole idea was to wipe out the local small tea businesses by undercutting them completely. All to establish a road to monopoly.

    • @tomrichey
      @tomrichey  9 ปีที่แล้ว

I've got a few topical videos on it and will do a more formal one sometime. Search Tom Richey Declaration of Independence or Tom Richey Pursuit of Happiness. In one video, I'm actually reciting the whole thing!

Actually small colonial businesses suffered because they could not afford the "Stamp", which was now required by law in order to sell tea in the colonies. Leading to the monopoly. This was essentially corporatism.

This is a terribly biased account.
    1. Once again, this came back to taxation without representation. The goal was to protest British Parliament's tax on tea that was imposed with the colonists still not having any say in the matter despite being British citizens.
    2. The Monopoly put American tea merchants out of business.
    3. The British East India Company had a surplus of tea that was just sitting in their warehouses. That's why they were willing to sell it at low prices.
    4. Yes, Americans prefer freedom of choice. If the British East India Company could sell low-cost, high-quality tea, let them compete with others. Why do they need to forcibly put other people out of business and out of work? This is not an unreasonable thing to be upset about.

Did Britain ever forbid the colonies from minting coin? And did Britain demand the colonies pay all their taxes and fees in gold only?

it wasn't just about the tea prices, i mean.. the government (British Crown), the colonists had it pretty rough on the receiving end of The Crown, unnecessary deaths, bullying, assaults, thievery, you get all of that, and then the tea incident basically said this.. you have but 1 option, and that pretty much put fire to gasoline, oddly enough all the core reasons of the RW, are mirrored to our current government.. the only exception is, our government is worse.. tyrannical government throughout history, not just in America.. have fallen to "the people" , you would assume, governments would catch on lol but.. I'm proud of our ancestors for fighting, killing, and removing the grasp of power, controlling government, and i will be more proud of me.. and my fellow Americans who remove our current power hungry government in RW2

+BigBubba8410 i'd say americans were better of under british rule in 1766 than under the modern american governments who are bribed by corporations.
At least the distant British gov of the 1700s were democratic.!

This guy looks like Matt Damon with a southern accent, which is ideologically surreal because our good teacher Richey here is a right leaning objective brilliant, fair and balanced patriot of history, whereas Damon is a woke leftist whose very gospel on the american past is Howard Zinn's people's history of the united states (watch the Bostonian "Good Will Hunting" for reference)
