As an American, I can confirm. It was a shock to find out that America is the ONLY country that CONTINUES to TAX its citizens, even after they've moved abroad! It's also shocking that the process for renouncing is so expensive, and long. Feels malicious. And makes me feel much less 'patriotic'.

As long as you are an American citizen, not having renounced your citizenship, you are literally owned by the government anywhere you go in the world. It gives the term Prison Planet the meaning.

As an American who's well traveled and who has lived abroad forty-six of my sixty-eight years I can say your'e correct. I go back to the States every now and again and still love many aspects of it but I'll be damned if I consider it a "free" country, or the freest place on earth, as my countrymen are wont to boast. Americans are drowning in rules, laws and regulations and must pay for daily abuse. They have no idea. You can't even go for a quiet walk without being assaulted with various and ubiquitous signs saying no sitting, no loitering, no this, no that etc. You can get ticketed or even arrested in most places at the drop of a hat. For me freedom isn't just words in a noble document. It's something you sense and it can't be put into words. It's everyday life where you respect others and mind your own decent business while they do the same. I once saw a bumper sticker in California back in the '80's that summed it up perfectly. It said; "I may not know what freedom is but I sure as Hell know what it ain't."
My trip to Poland and Hungary really opened my eyes. My family comes from Hungary. After seeing how amazing those countries are, im in the process of document collection and language acquisition to get my Hungarian citizenship. Then. I. Am. Gone.
Seeing all the movements and steps towards protecting the identity and culture uniqueness of Hungary, this country has long future. Like most Central, Eastern European countries. The West is already struggling with issues that cannot be undone and will affect the demography, then the economy of these countries.

I'm a Brit living in Bucharest for some time now. A few years ago my bank here, ING, called me into the branch and said the head office needs me to fill in a form as an expat about all my investments. After reading the doc I noticed ther was no mention of European Union, just IRS. I denied filling any info telling them this is for US citizens not EU citizens. They said its for all expats so I asked to see the form in another European language which they couldnt. I wonder how many people fell for this trick.?
The US control of banks all round the world is part of its hegemony. Banks outside the US are obliged to tell the US if any person living in the US has an account there. They do this by asking the client for all kinds of details.
@@eveliinatistelgren172 The fact that the doc only mentioned the IRS and they couldnt supply me with a version in another European language I feel it was for the US government. I refused to give them any details and heard nothing from them about the issue.
@thulomanchay Nah, she had it right the first time. Leaving the US is checking out. But according to the IRS it doesn't matter where you live, you never REALLY left, so they keep trying to tax you.
@@Nomadic9900 Did you know you can do a wire transfer into a foreign national bank? And that not all banks worldwide are willing to give the IRS access to said accounts? Just because you're unaware, or more likely, don't have enough money to make it worth while, doesn't mean the options don't exist.
@@Nomadic9900 Off the top of my head there's like ten countries that don't adhear to the CRS standards. Basically, if the IRS comes a calling and says "we see there are five US citizens who bank with you, and we'd like access to their financials to assess their taxes" those banks will say "go fuck a duck."
It should be noted that in the 1930s the Nazi regime in Germany freely allowed German citizens to renounce their German citizenship. All that was required was for a form to be filled in and then that form to be presented in person at a German consulate. There was not any requirement for interviews etc.

The people in the USA pay 30-40% of each paycheck in taxes. Meanwhile they receive almost zero in benefits for it. All while struggling to survive in a dystopian hellscape.

If you don't live, work, nor have assets in the USA how can they justify taxing you overseas? This goes completely against what the USA was founded on.
My experience is for the most part exactly what you have pointed out. I would add that every US consulate has different forms. For example, Austria treats Citizens like prisoners asking for parole. They suggest more than once that you have a lawyer look over your documents before filing. One question that I found especially disturbing was whether you voted in a us election. If yes, explain. My second attempt to renounce was in Amsterdam. That was even better than Frankfurt where I am officially assigned. They filled out the Forms for you based on the information filled out on their questionnaire. They even confirm receipt of documents immediately. My problem was I do not live there and they rejected my request to my dismay. Not all consulates are the same even though the US flag is flying. This is a shameful nation with regard to how they treat expat’s. My patriotic heart was bleeding and now I only want the get out of jail free card of German citizenship.
I got my Ecuadorian citizenship in 2019, just before the pandemic. It took about 1year, 2 months, and cost me roughly $3K, but it was worth it. I hit some minor hurdles and roadblocks here in Ecuador, but kept grinding forward until I got the citizenship. Worth its weight in gold.

Writing from Canada, I completely relate to "I don't recognize my country; I don't believe they'll keep me safe; I don't believe they care about me". Also, I contacted the British embassy in Ottawa, in an attempt to determine whether I qualify for British citizenship (my father is British). Firstly, there is no option to speak to anyone unless 'you have an emergency with your British passport', and they don't allow 'walk ins'. Appointment only. So how can you get an appointment if there is nobody to speak to about an appointment????? It's straight out of a Dickens... the 'circumlocution office' where you go round and round and they go out of their way to be unhelpful. no doubt paid by taxpayers.
Your experience with the British embassy should give you a clue as to how much the British govt cares about anyone. I assure you that it is the same with ALL govts. The govt officials see regular people as mere peasants to be used and abused. So I chuckle when I see peasants have high hopes from their nanny govts, that they'll "keep me safe" and will "care about me". I'm an American. Here too most people expect the govt to be their nannies who're supposed to take care of them. I used to think that Republicans were different, but when Donald Trump became president, Republican -voters- peasants were looking to him to be his nanny/daddy and wanted him to take care of them and fix all their problems. Lol, didn't happen. Now that there is no one strong enough to be their daddy, they're lost and don't know what to do. Except America wasn't supposed to be like this. People were supposed to take care of themselves, not rely on the govt or corporations. This is why the people's God-given right to bear arms was protected along with many other God-given rights. The govt's tasks were minimal. The Federal govt here was fairly small even 100 years ago. The state govts too. I think that Teddy Roosevelt was the first guy who pushed for nanny policies, and the peasants fell for him. Today, the govt system is so large that nothing escapes them. Reliance on insurance companies absolved people of more responsibilities and made them further weak. So is it any wonder that people have lost their holiness and are treated like low-class peasants by the govt, the mega-corporations, and even by fellow citizens!? To any Americans reading this- The solution isn't to flee the country. The solution is to destroy the big govt and big corporations, and become responsible yourselves. It is easy to destroy them- just stop relying on them and stop funding them. Becoming responsible yourselves is much harder and I can't give details here. But fleeing would work only temporarily. The 'leaders' in your new country will figure out quick that you see them as nannies, and then they too will start treating you like peasants to be used and abused.
@@JasbirSingh-zj1fg I can agree with you 100 percent. However, many people can game the system and get much more from it than they put in. That is why there is so much illegal border crossings. If a person uses the "system" like the immigrants do, they can have a comfortable life.

Honestly I love all the points you have drawn about this topic. I am a proud Black Woman. And I have been researching giving up my US citizenship. I am in the Caribbean. I am somewhere that I don't have to fear my life. In America, I didn't feel protected. I was in a very abusive relationship. The police were wonderful, though. I knew in my heart they had a conscience because until I left the apartment they checked on me every other day. But the courts are a joke. They allowed the idiot to live 2 blocks from me. And why was he granted bail? He had 2 times with me and 1 time with another woman. He family harassed me. My children that don't belong to him, he stalked them until I sent for them to come with me. With all of this I already made my mind up. Hell no, I will never step foot back in America. I have a computer. I can order things from there if needed. There is nothing I need there. I am no contact with mostly all my relatives. So yeah I have no ties there. I am not going to stay in a country where I have to fight to be an equal and I worry about my two Black sons. They are cute little boys right now. But at a point they will grow up to be men. I am tired of living like that especially when i have other options. Everybody is here for different reasons. But good luck to all. I hope you find your green pastures. Good luck with your process.

This country is out of control and getting worse. Does anyone know or recommend countries or (areas in the Caribbean) that have gun friendly laws?
The Mexican constitution guarantees your right to own firearms for self defense in your home or sport or hunting rifles; however, the secondary law restrict to those that are not for the use of the military. They created a backlog so large that if they did process the requests it would look really bad. If the US goes from 2k renouncing each year to 30k it would look really bad. They'd likely make it impossible to renounce in the future to avoid it entirely.
My concern about giving up your American citizenship is how do you protect your money. Where do you do your banking? Which countries should a person avoid if they have a large sum in the bank?
This idea that you shouldn’t say anything bad about living in the US because you could be in this country or that country (citing really bad options) is absurd. Because you aren’t aiming for the worst, you want to make things better and can you do that in the US? Sure if you’re wealthy or have a plan that becomes successful. The thing is that’s not going to be all of us and it’s getting harder and harder to get by comfortably. Think about that, getting by comfortably in the richest nation on the planet is getting harder and harder. So leaving for better options isn’t a bad idea, that’s how most of us ended up in the US to begin with. I personally would love to be in a country that values it’s people enough to provide comprehensive healthcare to all of their citizens. A place were they don’t have a larger prison population than even dictatorships do (all because of a for profit prison system and corrupt politicians). Yet, we lock up non víolent people and have a revolving door justice system for víolent crimínals. We have media that isn’t held to journalistic integrity and propagate divisive rhetoric as “news”. We have a military industrial complex that is dangerous not only to the world but to all of us too (us meaning the citizens of the US too). The łeft in the US aren’t our survivors any more than the ríght is, if 2020 taught you anything it should be that.
My experience in Ecuador, I needed a US government form notorized. Ecuador doesnt notorize documents in English. I was glad to hear the US embassy offered it as a service. One way to get rid of citizenship is to join a foreign army or military back and get your citizen ship revoked which would be what you’d want to have happen and it wouldn’t cost a thing compared to 2300 or whatever you’re saying

Andrew, Isn't it illegal to seize a Oligarch's yacht? I do not understand why a nation would do this since the Oligarch did not cause the war. Which nations are welcoming the oligarchs with no restrictions? THANKS
Let me pose an interesting thought. In Russia, the oligarchs supposedly wield the power. Putin may be in charge, but without them, he can’t last. Kind of how you can’t attain political office without substantial money to fund your campaign. Often, when nations crumble, those with wealth flee with their wealth. The idea of seizing the oligarchs’ wealth as a way to influence Putin makes sense IF their control is that tight. Otherwise, it’s like trying to dam a river by tossing in pebbles. It’ll eventually work, but over time…not overnight. Now, consider the conflict China has with Taiwan. When communists took over China, the ruling families fled to Taiwan with their wealth. Will the world justify seizing the wealth of the Taiwanese interests as a way to make Taiwan accepts forced reunification with China at China’s insistence?

I even know that getting a US passport renewal takes forever. Right now wait time for appointment is ridiculously long. Seems there's a major shortage of staff in gov offices.
I played with the idea of renouncing my US citizenship but my kids will still live there and have their careers there so I still need my passport to return to visit them. I just want to minimize or elminate any taxes when I retire overseas.
I think the only way this is going to get resolved is through lawsuits. People have a right to renounce in a reasonable timeframe and that can be argued in court
I am (still) a US citizen and I live in Germany. Yes, it's true that you should "be willing" to give up US citizenship in order to attain German citizenship, but there are conditions in which "it is too difficult" or "too expensive" to give up US citizenship, one may be allowed to keep it and attain German citizenship as well. Therefore, becoming a dual citizen. This may be a step closer eventually renouncing US citizenship.

It's a Monty Python skit.
Contact the Foreign Office in London and , if you can travel out of Canada go to london and speak to an immigration lawyer .

I do have access to property in Puerto Rico it is cheaper over there. They have mudslides and when strong winds come and trees fall they shut the road down and you can't get to your house 🏠
I'm still waiting for you to cover the new citizenship by descent rules in Slovakia and the great changes they made! Or did I miss it?
Thanks Andrew for being out there. Rich
I am a huge gun enthusiast and I have been thinking of taking the leap to a new country. But truth be told I don't want to give up my collection of firearms and that's the main reason why I have been holding onto my citizenship of a country I no longer recognize as my own.
You may own up to .38 but nothing bigger, rifles, but not auto or semi auto machine guns, only hunting rifles. My guess is that there is no other country in the world as permissive with firearms as the USA. Good luck, Have thought about Antarctica? 😊
I left 3 years ago still traped still running will not look back good luck god bless all
I never feel more rage and anger than I do during the annual FBAR report.
Over the last 2 years, I find myself in a situation where I stand corrected by Nomad Capitalist after years of dogging you guys.
Im starting to look at renouncing my American citizenship seriously now.
If voting mattered, they wouldn't let us vote!! Lol just a sick Merry go round!! Lol
lol thats being tried now. So make sure you do vote.
Even IF it did we have no real representation. Both political parties are one singular party masquerading as two. They work for the corporate oligarchy not WE the people. This won't change unless we change the system via revolution tragically.
It depends on the situation, as to the cost. If the person is simply a working person, one that works every day to live, let them go simply by completing a form, no interview. If they have built a business using this nation, the people and its resources, there should be a cost.
Wrong, the cost has been paid through taxation! To charge anymore is punitive and infantile 👶
Having been to the US Embassy's in Russia (was the best service I had every received), Germany, Vietnam provided great service.
Very well stated and informative. 👍
Fascinating topic. I agree with all your points.
Thank you.
I wasn’t born in the US but I’ve been here since I was 10 now at 33. I gotta say I love this country more than the country I was born in. It gave me so much opportunities and a better life.
Which country are you in now
which country were you in??
Excellent commentary 👌
Thank you.
2 is 1 and 1 is none!
As a US expat, I have thought of renouncing, however the cost is prohibitive for me. I am a disabled pensioner, and so the nearly $2500 is just too much ~
Them: oh you don't want to pay US taxes
You: So
I once thought of fighting for this country. I now believe I must have hit my head not too long before that. It’s too corrupt and that corruption spreads to vast across this landscape to think there will be any immediate changes in my lifetime. I’m not wealthy by any means at this point in my life but I plan to grow my wealth as I desperately daydream of renouncing my US citizenship. I have always said after realizing I left a domestic abuse relationship I was still in one with my country. Everyone here is weather they admit it or not is up to them.
In Europe people pay very high taxes but at least Europeans get more benefits from their government but the United States is high taxes and the citizens are being bully to submission and no help for anything whatsoever.
What does the average EU born citizen get for their ridiculously high taxes? Health insurance, that they could purchase or that their job should provide?
@@stephanied143 it is horrible to get insurance through an employer. If one gets fired or needs to quit due to harassment it is almost impossible to do. An employee has to put up with an abusive boss only because of health insurance. No way. No system is perfect but the United States is going from bad to worse. I advice people with green cards not to get citizenship it is not worth it.
@@vickiecordon7887 ...Of course u would zero in on "harassment", "abusive"....I'm betting u have filed numerous complaints in that area, LOL. U can buy private insurance in the interim between employee provided insurance. The taxes those countries pay, I flat wouldn't work if they take that much of my check...period.
I complain about my tax already, can’t imagine what it must feel like paying taxes in a country you don’t live in or work in!
Of course they want every penny of your money foever.
Thank you for providing us this valuable😮, life transforming information!!!❤
Interesting and informative! Thank you for making it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad to have you, Joseph.
Amen sir! I totally agree we have become nothing more than revenue in their eyes.
They provide this service one day a month and it costs $50.
Its funny, the US embassy here in Ecuador is like a fortress with fences, wire, barriers blockades etc. You are confronted by at least four guards before you even get inside while the Swiss embassy is just another building on the street.
One way to get rid of citizenship is to join a foreign army or military back and get your citizen ship revoked which would be what you’d want to have happen and it wouldn’t cost a thing compared to 2300 or whatever you’re saying
My sister is disabled and living on SSI. I told her to renounce her US citizenship cross the border and request refugee status so she could get more benefits
Why would anyone say wanting to avoid paying taxes in a country you no longer live is a bad thing??? That makes no sense.
LMAO ...I am of the Quichita band , of the western tribe of the Cherokee nation ... we've been trying too renounce our ties for hundreds of years , thru legal means , thru kinetic action , thru diplomacy , thru closing our eyes and chanting la la la la , and the bia told us no ...lol good luck upon you folks
Lucky my wife has Canadian citizenship and has lived in Canada since college. She travels with Canadian passport and has never renewed her US passport. Good luck to all.
Keep updating us
Andrew, Isn't it illegal to seize a Oligarch's yacht?

I’m not sure Any of the government offices are actually working. We are still trying to get an income tax refund from 2019.. initially stalled due to C17.. still I can rarely get a person on the phone at the IRS. And now they need extra docs filed.. starting the process all over. This is ridiculous.
I am on green card and eligible to apply for citizenship having completed my 5 years stay. My concern is is it worth applying for citizenship if it’s going to be hard or near impossible to renounce in future, if I want to? Am I better off staying on my green card status, which maybe easier to give up?
if you can renew the green card, you're better off
Just keep renewing your green card. You'll be better off.
My husband is on a green card. Once we move out of the US, there are a set number of years he is required to file taxes. I think it’s 8 years, then he is free from the irs.
Thanks for the advice

The real impediment to renouncing US citizenship is not waiting in line at at embassy or having to wait a few months for an appointment. Rather it is the draconian exit tax that applies to covered us persons. Can you please discuss this?
AMEN! Couldn't agree more. Lived in EU in 2018/2019 and was 'red pilled' on what the US is really like on the world stage. Desperate to get back to EU and working toward that end now.
Try Latin America! 🌴
Eastern Europe is better than Western Europe.
Why the EU is now a complete fascist state
South East Asia is where you want to be
Where in the EU's schengen zone did you live @ A.J Lane.
I just want to minimize or elminate any taxes when I retire overseas.
when the Dollar collapses future for kids will be bleak
A crime against humanity it is to create humans in the USA. Guilty you are as are numerous others it's a cruel fate you've bestowed upon them.
🤔please do a video discussing what countries have citizen by descent
I think the only way this is going to get resolved is through lawsuits. People have a right to renounce in a reasonable timeframe and that can be argued in court
Where? In their kangaroo courts??
I am (still) a US citizen and I live in Germany. Yes, it's true that you should "be willing" to give up US citizenship in order to attain German citizenship, but there are conditions in which "it is too difficult" or "too expensive" to give up US citizenship, one may be allowed to keep it and attain German citizenship as well. Therefore, becoming a dual citizen. This may be a step closer eventually renouncing US citizenship.
@@Timithos Germany is thinking about allowing dual citizenship in the future.
Time for Nomad Anarcho-Capitalist!!
Looking over your shoulder will be the norm, no matter where you are. Governments won't even give you any choice anymore, so why comply in the first place?
@@Timithos I'm saying that they'll make it so that you can't fully comply and reach your goal, or it will be near impossible to do so, in the near future.
Just look at the last 2 years, we are already half way there!
Great info, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
FYI, if you tried to make an appointment with a US embassy to start Social Security....you'd find it near impossible since Covid started....to get an appointment. Getting tax refunds for 2021? I'm still waiting (11 months since I submitted the tax return for a lousy $800 refund). There are various functions of the government which simply aren't working as advertised. They all use the argument of Covid.
Scamdemic
How can you have been waiting 11 months for 2021 returns when 2021 ended 3 months ago?
They shut the US fedgov (inc - 1871) bureaucracy down. The real problem is that the US bureacracy and income tax even exists. Why not protest that?
Well, it was quite useful to fix the 2020 election. Some of the executive orders in various states have been made permanent which means it will be just about impossible to have honest elections anymore.
@@GilmerJohn Like elections have ever been honest.
It has always been selections, used to put in place people they want to, they did not get rid of monarchy for nothing
Imagine being in a place where you can't access your own embassy...
Try manila. Tried 4 times but first you had to pay $174 for an appointment. Forget the phone. It is never answered or calls are never returned.
Hi... Are you American too living in Manila?
Do you still pay tax being away from US?
Im considering desicions for myself. Please let me know.
Ironically many people waiting for the US Citizenship here in US. It's life!!.
Lol
Its still a good place to make money, but when you have money its time to leave.
Exactly... if you talk to some in certain countries, they literally DREAM of that blue passport. the grass is not always greener either way
They are open and providing service in Canada now.
