I only just came across this vid. Some of you may know that besides playing Hop Sing for the entire 14 seasons on Bonanza, Victor Yen Sung was also an accomplished chef of Cantonese cuisine and had published a cookbook. Sadly, at the time of his death he was in poverty. Pernell Roberts paid for all the funeral expenses and gave the eulogy. RIP to both of them.
That is sad to learn. I knew the Dortorts who created the show. I asked them about Hop Sing, they told me at one time he owned a restaurant here in Los Angeles.
I remembered him as more of a cliché. It was nice to see my memory was wrong. He was a comic character of course, but not a silly caricature of a Chinese man. And there was obvious respect from the Cartwrights for for him.
Hop Sing was a wonderful character. I loved him in Maestro Hoss. "Sounds like old China." I cried when he wanted to get married and couldn't because she was of a different race. So sad.
Hop Sing was Bonanza,,,he was The Man..He was The Dude,,, Hop was respected and known by all of us growing up in So Cal The hard working familys we broke bread with every Friday and Saturday nights in their wonderful down home good vibe, restaurants ,they treated us like family and so did we,,,we played on each others baseball teams,,, The hard working familys we went to High School with The hard working familys that helped us with our laundry and dry cleaning And no regrets we shared that life and time with them and are with us to this day The Chinese population helped build So California brick by brick yard by yard and I am grateful and blessed I worked right beside them and went thru school with them,,they are brothers in arms,,,
I understood the gist of the Cantonese that Hop Sing was saying in that clip! From 2:11-2:13, as he's closing the door, he was definitely saying "Working from sunrise, working til nightfall!" Afterwards, the gist of what he's saying (if I understand correctly) is, "and then these moments where I have to deal with these added hassles" or "this added craziness" or "this added foolishness", etc. Hope that helps!
I remember going over my uncles house to watch Disney then Bonanza because he bought a new Zenith color TV a couple years before my dad bought one. Loved this show!!!
Nice to see a tribute to Hop Sing - he was such a great character. I'd love to know what some of his Chinese "mutterings" actually said. Thanks for posting.
It's great to see all the Cartwrights behave like gentlemen towards women according to the 19 century rules of polite society. They help ladies off the horse, let them go first thru the door, hold the door for them, carry heavy packages, pull out chairs for them, get up when a lady enters the room, and respect other society rules. It shows that despite living on the remote Ponderosa ranch, they had all received exceptional upbringing from the East Coast, abroad and from Pa Ben.
I truly liked Hop Sing. In one episode he helped solve a murder by using the Chinese method to identify people through finger printing, which the U.S. didn't know of at that time,{c. 1860's for the show}. Another time some bruts dishonored him by cutting off his pigtail, and the Cartwrights had a fit about those bad guys. There was another episode when he fell in love with a girl named Missy.
I remember seeing the finger print episode, I even remember him saying that fingerprints were called "chop" in Chinese, and they were accepted as evidence in Chinese courts.
Hope they did a Magnum PI and make Hop Sing the secret owner of the Ponderosa. Just saw a TH-cam episode where he speaks perfect English. More evidence he was playing everybody! Hope his great grandson returns in a reboot as Bruce Hop/e and kick some butt!
No problem! My pleasure! As an aside, I actually watched my very 1st Bonanza episode a week ago as part of some Film, TV, & Society class @ university ("The Fear Merchants", where Hop Sing gets beaten up in Virginia City, & his cousin, Jimmy Chang, is accused of a murder he didn't commit)! Afterwards, I did some TH-cam checking, then I stumbled onto this vid!
It was interesting in this episode at the beginning when Hop Sing was speaking with other Chinese men without using the "put on" accent he used in front of the Cartwrights.
I'm glad that you enjoyed your 1st Bonanza. I hope you'll watch more - there are some really great episodes. If you like the ones with a Chinese element, try 'Day of the Dragon' and 'A Pink Cloud Comes from Old Cathay'. 'San Francisco Holiday' also featuires Hop Sing and his cousins quite a bit. Enjoy!!
I really love the character of Hop Sing I just wondered what was it like for him to work on a set because very few Asian American actors were here on TV at that time and I wonder did he have any problems betraying a character that could be considered Politically Incorrect these days... his real name was Victor sen Yung
Oh God, this representation is 100% correct. All my Cantonese workers I bring from Hong Kong to my western country to work in my restaurant, act the same, funny, hardworking and charming. Nothing racist about this character, and my parents are 100% Cantonese.
Siempre me llamó la atención q Hop Sing sea el único empleado de la casa para todos los quehaceres, de una familia de cuatro personas. Lavado de ropa, pisos y cocinar.???????????😓👎
Victor was wonderful and his death was tragic. In reality he spoke better English than most of us. He was the perfect example of Hollywood's bigotry against non whites of the time.
Kevin Doran Ridiculous comment. Racists always want everything to be about racism and will always find a way to try and make it so. He was an actor playing a role.
Yeah, fine, he spoke better English than you, but Hop Sing, the Chinese immigrant had room for improvement. He spoke better English than Wu, so he has that going for him.
But I say real truth back then the American West you couldn't even walk inside a saloon without being discriminated whether you were Native whether you were black or whether you were Asian or whether you were Hispanic or Jewish
I think only someone who is unsure of their own racist attitude would have a problem with Hop Sing. He was a very interesting character on a TV show and I am sure this Hop Sing would have been well taken care of.
It is actually true, the characters story. The Chinese would work and earn enough money to open a restaurant. When a gold miner struck it rich they would hire the owner/chef to cook for them. It would be a lot easier to cook for a few instead of a bunch so they took the job. If you can cook Chinese food you can cook anything and they got top wages and were in demand.
why did you cut it off at the end??? hop sing was about to catch a beatin off those 4 guys, like he did every time he went into virginia city. you skipped the best part.
the sage of annie o' toole... the rescue...the fear merchants,..... i think enter mark twain....and the one with the donut cant remember...lol....hope this helps...
hop sing,,el cocinero chino siempre decía,,,el señol hoss lejal silla le lela lompel el olto ,,tenel la muy glande ,,hacel lonlonear a hop sing ,,hop sing sel mujel le hoss,,,

Hop Sing was one of the best comic relief in this show. I loved it when he would chew out the Cartwrights for something.
Hop Sing was wonderful - amazing - spectacular - wise - funny. There will never be another like him.
Hop Sing and Hoss were my two favorite characters on that show!
I remembered him as more of a cliché. It was nice to see my memory was wrong. He was a comic character of course, but not a silly caricature of a Chinese man. And there was obvious respect from the Cartwrights for for him.
I love hop sing
i love it when hop sing scolded hoss for taking a donut classic!
Hop Sing was a wonderful character. I loved him in Maestro Hoss. "Sounds like old China." I cried when he wanted to get married and couldn't because she was of a different race. So sad.
Ich habe die Serie geliebt .Schaue sie mir heute noch an . Auf Sat Gold .Hopsing war mein absoluter Favorit .👍🤗

Hop Sing was a big part of this show.

He was great in the Charlie Chan films. Only spoke in Cantonese (?) when he was scared or angry. Born in San Francisco.
It wasn't until recently I learned Hop Sing and Jimmy Chan (Charlie Chan's #2 son) were the same person. Victor was very good looking in his 20s.
He was beautiful when he was young.
Hope they did a Magnum PI and make Hop Sing the secret owner of the Ponderosa.
Just saw a TH-cam episode where he speaks perfect English. More evidence he was playing everybody!

Hop Sing-the real hero of *B*O*N*A*N*Z*A*

HOP SING IS THE MAN!
His ultimate threat was: "Hop Sing quit!"
Thanx for the heads up on those episodes!
I'm glad that you enjoyed your 1st Bonanza. I hope you'll watch more - there are some really great episodes. He loved playing Hop Sing. Just stop with the PC nonsense.
I've got news for you. Very few Asian Americans are on tv now.
I think the one with the donut is from Feet of Clay :-) Great video!!

No I believe it was Philip Ahn
No...It was Philip Ahn. He and Key Luke were 2 of the Shao Lin priests in Kung Fu.
Hop Sing was not speaking Cantonese. He was speaking Toisanese. Most of the early chinese migrant workers were from the region of Toisan.

Kevin Doran:I have noticed more than once that foreigners speak & write better than British/American born.Sad comment on teaching these days.
