    The first time I heard this song was on Armed forces Radio Vietnam. We had had just arrived at some dusty tiny fire support base in the middle of nowhere . And I heard the song and was struck by the power of its story. Fifty years and a little more have passed by since then. and I am still moved by it. Rest in peace Kenny Rodgers

    A lot of people think this one is too mawkish and melodramatic but I always found it very moving. It was a cautionary tale about just one of the ongoing problems that many vets faced - and you could extrapolate from there. Great delivery by Kenny.

    Every time I hear this song, which I have a love/hate feeling for, I am dragged back to my Basic Training in the Army. My fiancé took her love to town when I was at quite a low time in my life. We broke up as soon as I got back, and I then I met the girl I needed to be with. We’ve been married 50 years this month. I thank God every day for that breakup.

    I was 17 and my buddy and I flew from Denver to Gunnison, CO in December 1970 to ski at Crested Butte. The plane was a Frontier Airlines Convair 580 turboprop and the trip from Denver started out with the plane aborting takeoff due to excess weight because Kenny Rogers and The First Edition had too much weight with their amplifiers, PAs and lighting equipment. They off loaded the equipment and put it on another Frontier jet flight to Grand Junction where it could be trucked to Gunnison. Once we were enroute, the weather deteriorated so we couldn't land in Gunnison. We ended up in Montrose, CO where Frontier chartered a Continental Trailways bus to take us - me, my buddy and the band - to Gunnison. It was a blizzard and we were moving at 10 mph through snow drifts. We ended up stopping until a plow came along to clear the road. They were all so cool. They had their acoustic guitars and played Ruby and Condition while we passed a doob. True story. Damn I miss those days.

      I loved the song but it was a sort of depressing song. I don't understand why Kenny turned it into a "happy" song with a speeded up tempo and people clapping and singing along.

    • @rickloera9468
      @rickloera9468 ปีที่แล้ว

      @jusssayin480 Jackie Wilson did the same thing when he was on Ed Sullivan. He was singing Lonely Teardrops in an upbeat tempo while snapping his fingers smiling at the audience. My wife didn't see it until I brought up the song on TH-cam. Bug difference.

    So funny at the end to hear the yells and applause of an apparent kids' matinee crowd after hearing a song that wasn't exactly bubble gum pop! A very underrated song...brilliant words by Mel Tillis, and the usual greatness of Kenny Rogers. Not many people can sing intense lyrics like that with such a quiet but fierce delivery. I wish music today had the classy edge that this songs like this used to.

    The Lead Guitar ( TERRY WILLIAMS ) makes the Hit , coming in with his perfect Riff : 40 Something about the tone, and the musicianship is stellar. The arrangements are perfect. Those guitar flourishes are perfect and perfectly played. How can anyone listen to this only once? “Ruby is a real life narrative about a soldier coming home from World War II in 1947 to Palm Beach County, Florida,” says Tillis, himself a Florida native. “The soldier brought along with him a pretty little English woman he called ‘Ruby,’ his war bride from England, one of the nurses that helped to bring him around to somewhat of a life. He had recurring problems from war wounds and was confined mostly to a wheelchair. He’d get drunk and accuse Ruby of everything under the sun. Having stood as much as she could, Ruby and the soldier eventually divorced, and she moved on.” Tillis Changed the One Line to give it a teal towards our Asian Wars.

    Mel Tillis wrote this song in 1945 when he was around 13 yrs old. It's a true story about Tillis' neighbor who was a wounded WWII Vet. The Vet married a nurse in Great Britain who was caring for the vet as his wounds from WWII healed. Tillis later changed the words in his song sometime in the late 50s early 60s to referencing the Korean War: "crazy Asian war."
    Johnny Darrell was the first to record it in 1967. The single was a hit on Country Charts at the #9 position.

    When this song was released in 1969 I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman stationed at the Chelsea Naval Hospital in Boston, Mass. I was assigned to work on Ward 'F' which was the Neurosurgery ward having an average daily census of anywhere between 50-to-60 patients, the overwhelming majority of which were wounded warriors returning home from Viet Nam. These brave men had suffered a wide range of injuries to their brains, their spinal columns and their extremities. A large number of these individuals sustained paralyzing injuries from either the neck down, the waist down and on occasion even one half of their bodies were paralyzed. Oh sure, we had our automobile injuries and diving accidents resulting in the same form of paralysis, but as mentioned, the majority of the wounded were returning Viet Nam vets. Needless to say, this song was not popular with these men. It was banned from being played or listened to by the patients or staff alike by our Chief of Neurosurgery, Dr. Nickolaus P. Kitrinos, Captain USN Medical Corps. If the song started playing on the radio (which most guys had at their bedsides) it was my job to ensure that the radio was turned off or the volume lowered so as it could not be heard by anyone. After a suitable amount of time had passed, the radios were permitted to be turned on again. Keep in mind that this was a large, open ward with no private rooms. I went on to serve two tours of duty with the Marines after leaving Ward F, but I will always remember the guys and the times we shared with each other.

    My favorite musicians of the non hard rock n roll singer of the Vietnam Era music! This was such a great song and Kenny Rogers had such a good voice. I love this version best of all, because he sings it slower. He wasn't ever hard on the eyes either! Just sitting back on a very early Sat/Sun am listening to the music I loved most of all when I was young. Kenny Rogers is one of the many of my favorites, that will be missed. @Philip Betts uk song writer and performer I'm 65 and grew up listening to Kenny. My sister, 2.6 years older and I went out weekend nights listening to music while raising the temp in the house with our hair dryers. Darn teenagers. I was in the bathroom getting my face together when sister shouted to me "Marianne! Somethings Burning!" one of our favorite Kenny songs came on the radio. Poor Daddy, he was 47 when I was born I never saw him move so fast after that! Daddy was a professional musician his entire life, he was born in 1908 and played at the best venues. Piano and organ. That man could play like nothing else, from slow but he loved Art Tatum. I remember his hands flying on the keys.

    Ruby - This brings me right back to the late 1960s. I was around about 13. The radio was always on and my Mum loved this song. Kenny Rogers then gave us Lucille, Coward of the County, Daytime Friends and The Gambler in the 1970s. Very happy times for me and these records are part of the sound track. And, of course, his duets with Dolly weren't bad either - Islands in the Stream - love it. Thank you, Kenny. You gave us some wonderful music. RIP.

      I was a college freshman. I bought a copy of the 45 from the student bookstore, which I still have almost 51 years later (has it been that long??). He was a consummate performer and will be missed. RIP.

    This song spoke to the times and I know as I was there listening on the AM radio. I never understood why he took the country route, after hearing this song and "I just dropped in..., but to each their own. It's a really great song the way they used to make them with great instrumentation and singing and the most important factor of all - truly meaningful lyrics.
