Thumbs up, one suggestion: positioning the mics right next to each other might be more fair of a comparison. The lower mic tends to pick up more low end/warmth from your chest, plus you're essentially speaking directly into it, while the upper one naturally sounds clearer due to its distance and positioning. Adjusting their placement could help balance the audio from the start.
I'm sad to share that I bought the Comica VM-40 from Comica's Amazon store based on this review, and a few other reviews on youtube but when I opened my VM-40 box when arrived today, it had a used and damaged VM-30 and older (totally different) receiver along with a bunch of used accessories with obvious wear and tear, plus the windmuff was straight up missing! I purchased the mic because I have a performance to capture this weekend that needs the 32-bit float, and when I called Amazon they told me they can refund my money for a return, but there are no replacements available. So not only am I out my time and money ordering and dealing with their mistake, but I can't get a replacement and have to potentially give up the shoot (and $$$) this weekend because I couldn't get the mic I needed? I've never used Comica products before, but wanted to give them a chance (been using DJI and Hollyland), and I am appalled by this situation. Either someone scammed Amazon with a false return of older model product, which they didn't check, then resent out as new product, or Comica put the wrong product in the box from the factory (but it also has obvious damage, wear and tear, so I think it was used). Either way, not impressed that I have to deal with it unless Comica somehow steps up, cause Amazon sure isn't. And ironically, I would have likely given a good review to my 400k+ audience on TH-cam but they didn't even send me the correct microphone! If Comica reads this, they can contact me via my business email on my TH-cam channel.
If you purchased a used one, it’s often a bad return from another person. I’ve had that happen when the item i get is completely different from the one I bought. If you bought it new then Amazon made a mistake, as shipping things like that out is on them, not comica (typically). Sorry to hear about the situation, hope you get it fixed. I’m curious what work you’re doing that you would have to give up on because you do not have the 32bit, if you have the DJI or hollyland options, or even this used vm30, you could still use it in a pinch and make sure you dial your gain settings in properly as to not peak or be too quiet. Hope it goes well! God bless
Excellent review. The audio quality seems reasonable given the price point. What’s your own view having now done the video. How well treated is your indoor space as shotgun mikes struggle indoors more compared to pencil condenser mikes especially in untreated environments
The VM40 seems like one of those kebab shops that also does pizza and Chinese food: you're never going to get the best version of any of those things, but nobody goes to one of those places for a 5 star experience. They go because it will meet their need a that moment and situation. Obviously the MKH416 is in a different league, but the sheer functionality of the VM40 combined with the insane value is hard to ignore. For a one man band setup, the ability to reduce the bulk of a setup is key. I can see this being used in interview setups, travel vlogs, even in a journalism setting instead of a dictaphone. really interesting product!
The sound quality’s seems to be very dacent but above all the price is great and the fact that they give you all the cables and accessories is awesome.
Would you recommend this for a bit of professional work on a set? I’m just starting out so i don’t want to give up an arm and a leg for audio so i’m thinking a buying the dual tx and receiver set up could be a good option considering i’ll be working alone/ with a very small crew (two more people maybe) if this isn’t a good idea for that application do you have any suggestions that are a bit cheaper? I’m in need of a recorder and boom mic combo that won’t leave me hurting for too long
Could you make a test where you place both microphones in the same place? The is a difference when you hold microphone under your mouth and higher. I would like to know what's the real difference to sennheiser mkh416
How would you compare this mic to the previous version? I was already planning on buying the VM30 come cyber Monday but now this video drops and I’m trying to decide if I should spend a bit more on the VM40 or if there’s not that much of a difference.
So honestly Ive never used it and dont know a whole lot about it. depends on what you need, if you think you could benifit from the internal recording and 32bit float, then id go for this. if your budget only allows for the vm30 and you need it for projects soon, then go for it!
Does it do the safety track wirelessly? The VM30 only does it when plugged in to the camera with a cable. I'm confused is the kit that has the 'single' mic a stereo mic that does the safety track? - "while in wireless mode' ??
@thomasjmcclure I downloaded the manual and read that there are only two multi-function buttons instead of dedicated buttons for the seperate modes (safety-track, onboard-recording, etc). Do you have to set these modes every time when you power up the microphone or will the mic recall the last choice?
I’ve never been a big fan of the little mini transmitter style, my Rode’s i have connected to a videomic ntg to give me a wireless boom mic already, so this just cuts out the middle man
The audio quality is amazing

Good point thanks! I didn’t think about that!
Wow that's pretty awesome. A shotgun mic that's 32 bit float. Impressive feature dude. 😮
It’s pretty cool!

Hello, I have contacted you through the email on your homepage. I want to know more about this things!🙂
It sounds great for its price, just ordered one 😊 Very useful review video, thank you.
Very nice video! Would you choose the VM40 over the VM30? In other words, is the audio quality worth the extra $100 to go from the V30 to the V40?
VM40’s sound quality and 32bit floating point internal recording function are amazing🥰

That might be one of the best comparisons I’ve heard. Also since moving to America I’ve missed kebab shops so much!
@ mmmm kebab on chips, extra sauce from the Sphinx in stranmillis. My mouth is watering just typing it!
The audio quality of this microphone is GREAT! I might have to upgrade from my VM20 finally.
32bit floating point internal recording is amazing😃
@ thinking about taking the plunge😤🫡

That’s what had me surprised, the audio is good, and great if you’re willing to put a little work into it. But it kinda just has everything
Amazing quality, although the compression is throwing me off a bit
oh damn... here we go.. im gonna be spending more money on a new mic 😂😂😂😂 hell ya!! great episode!!

helpful review. thanks for posting
Thanks!

The safety track is wired😀

HI!Safety tracks will be remembered, but onboard recording, high frequency and low cut need to be turned on manually
Ohh, now I'm in between with dji mic 2 or this comica vm40.
I’ve never been a big fan of the little mini transmitter style, my Rode’s i have connected to a videomic ntg to give me a wireless boom mic already, so this just cuts out the middle man
great video
I want a vm40 so bad😭 I’ve got the comica vimo c3 lav mics
I have to say I’m very impressed!
@@thomasjmcclure I think it’s perfect, especially if you throw the mic on to a boom stand and you’ve got a wireless boom mic
Timecode?
No
✌...
I dare say it sounds better than the Sennheiser. I have the VM30 and it's pretty good as well, but no on-board recording or 32-bit float.
This is my first 32bit float setup, it was kinda crazy to see how much latitude I had
