I always felt like Eren was the victim and after the end I realize he still is. He's very much aware that he is leaving a world full of xenophobia, hate, and neo-patriotism. He is fully aware he has become the thing he hated: A titan that destroys families and takes away mothers of those that are innocent. He knew he was committing genocide and that it was just wrong; But he chose to do that so that the people he had grown with would not go through the tragedies they had already gone through. His love for them and their freedom was greater than his fear, guilt and regrets.
Agreed, there aren't very many if any true villains or heroes in AoT. That's what makes it so amazing. The fact the plot can actually make you sympathize with someone who wants to commit the kinds of acts Eren did really speaks to the incredible writing.
It's his freedom to choose to free the Eldians from their stereotype of devils from Paradis and brand _only_ himself as the Devil
I feel like Eren realized that xenophobia, wars and hate would never end, even after doing such genocide. But he did it anyways to protect his friends, not humanity. Very sad story where he is obligated to follow a path that goes directly to his greave just to save his friends and family.
Like, even after killing everyone except the Eldians, they would grow again to repopulate the world, and having different people ruling separated parts of the world would cause conflicts. In my perspective its all a matter of time for wars to start again after killing almost all the humanity. (and ofcourse i could be wrong lol)
He is such an interesting and thought provoking character, superbly well written.
