Multiple people in my family have used this machine daily for two years! Amazing machine and worth every penny! Much quieter than my delonghi. Worst thing is, the water drip tray gets full really fast.
Hey just so you know - on the Philips 1200 you can customize the amount of water used for the “high” level setting. So if you wanted to adjust it up to 10 or 12 ounces you can. The user manual tells you how to do this process :)
@@AG_Guardian do you own this machine? Cause I know what they said you can program the top amount but it only lets you program up to 8oz and that’s true for the 2200 and the 3300. I think I explained that in this video that even when programming your own shot you can’t program it manually over 8oz
@@JoeyVaracalli oh interesting, maybe yours is an older model or defective or something. On mine you can adjust it as high as you want. Although I dont think I have tried anything crazy high so I dont know what the cutoff is. Ill go try later and report back exactly how high it will go :)
Nice review. I bought one for my RV. Same size as my Keurig, but now have REAL coffee and buy ground coffee for the bypass doser. A pound of coffee is just about the same $$ as 12 Kcups. No plastic waste either. Cappuccino at rest areas and truck stops..awesome. Got it at a great price ☺️
Yeah that makes a lot of sense would have been super easy to let people program there own size but I think because it only grinds a very small amount per shot they didn’t want users making overly weak coffee
Which espresso machine would you recommend in the same price category? I just got the 2200 and the coffee is watery. The bigger cup I do, more watery it gets. I want a machine making great tasting coffee in a big cup, like the bigger cup you have with 12 oz. Got this machine for aprox 299$ .
Hello Thank you very much for your video, your comments are very profesional. I do have the same machine. We just use it, but it takes forever to do the coffe and to fill out a cup due to water flow is very low. not as you showed in your video. What do you recommend me to do? is there something wrong I'm doing with my machine? Thanks
I'm looking for one that I don't have to remove the water tank, that I can leave it in place and fill it as part of the machine. But the DeLonghi looks more involved with regard to cleaning. The Philips looks very easy with cleaning the group head.
Hey, features and usability aside, how do you think the espresso quality compares to the others you've reviewed? I really don't care for anything other than good espresso brewing so I have this Philips in mind
If your going for just espresso I'd go delonghi they have the best espresso shots for super automatics. I don't think they sell the esam 3300 any more but I reviewed that one and the espresso quality is still better then a lot of others
@@JoeyVaracalli thanks for the reply! Sadly im stuck with what I have available locally and the ESAM3300 isn't an option. The only delonghi I could get is the Magnifica S ECAM21 but it's over double the price at $1100 usd, have you had the chance to try that one?
Hello, I have ordered a Philips EP2220/10 for €250. Should I go for that or should I go for another machine around the price like the models they have on a barista and use a tamper? What do you rekomend? :)
@@robinbroberg1290 yeah the taste difference is noticeable as soon as you go from pressurized to non pressurized basket the taste is significantly different
I'm looking for an "affordable" espresso machine for my in-law - simple, no grinding, tamping, etc. Being an espresso lover, I think you are unfairly criticizing the amount of coffee (8 vs. 12 oz) the machine can make. Four additional ounces of water dilutes the coffee too much. There is only so much coffee you can extract out of a given puck. The intensity of the coffee varies by adjusting the amount of beans for a fixed puck size. If you were to extract 12oz of coffee from the same puck, I the result would end up being "hot brown water."
Lovely machine but remember it is an espresso coffee maker that I why the volumes are low. Espresso is a very small amount of coffee not a full cup. Video very informative. Thank you
Yeah I agree but if that were the case they shouldn’t put a coffee button on the machine just leave espresso and maybe have an americano option that auto fills just water
@@JoeyVaracalli totally agree with you. And. Why not supply the aquaclean filter with this 1200? So difficult to get hold of and try to contact Philips customer care... lol. Do they actually excist?. I liked when you warned about the messy after effects when using the ground coffee! Rather go for the beans, will last much longer and no mess, no fuss. We love your espresso and will rather make laty's if we want bigger cups/mugs
You can adjust the temperature. Turn it off and press the water-quantity button to level 1 -2 or 3, then press the far button on the right. Then turn it on.
@@alt3505 ohhhhhh I was referring to the water cycle it shoots out which that water isn’t as hot as the brew water for whatever reason I should have shown that in the video my bad

Thank you, i guess you used 12oz in the video? My issue with this machine is that milk frother only leans left, would be very helpful if it would lean forward. My machine is positioned by the wall and its very awkward to place a mug, def will have to get metal jug, just wasn’t sure of the size.
Hi, nice review, been eyeing this machine for awhile but wanted to know if the spout is made of plastic or metal? It looks like metal from all of the photos and in your video, but just like you said, every part is plastic. Thank you.
@@jjeng5877 can I ask why you want metal spouts only? Are you worried about plastic touching the hot coffee? if that’s the case non will do that. All super automatics have plastic brew units with rubberized plastic tubes that lead to the spouts
12 oz cup? What kinda beans u using that you can drink this size mug of coffe? Im confused right now....the 1 portion coffe from this machine is enough for your caffein boost. Either you press espresso or coffe.
No no I’m saying it won’t let you make anything over an 8oz americano. Or if you want more the. 8oz of just hot water you can’t do that you need to run multiple cycles
😃Tnx for your review. All cons that you mentioned are not realy some thing that wuld bother me. I bought the EP 2221/40for 300€(350$) and it came with 1kg Lavazza Top class coffe beans. The caffe from this machine taste great, like the one from coffe shop.
@@lakevoda230 yeah it’s a good machine we still have it for our Airbnb. I would disagree that a shot of espresso is the same as an E61 group like you would see in a cafe mostly because the pressure is more stable and they all use non pressurized portafilter baskets where as this machine uses a pressurized portafilter basket. Again to reiterate it a good machine but there are limitations with super automatics in general.
Yes, true, but the machine in coffe shops cost's $$$. im humble and enjoying nice cup of coffe at home. But there is always place for improowment, like in all things. I upgraded from Philips Senseo caffe pads machine to this one.
hi. im planning to buy either delongi ecam 22110sb or philips 2200. which one can last long in terms of durability, maintenence, maintenence cost & how the coffee taste like? currently been using semi auto which is not convinent to me
That’s a great question to ask. I’ll say I have never used the ecam 22110sb but I have used the esam3300 and that thing has never had any issues and it’s been in the family for 7 years. It’s been a real workhorse. As for the philips 2200 it hasn’t been out long enough to truly give a straight answer but if I were picking between the 2200 and esam 3300 I’d go with the delonghi esam 3300 because it makes better espresso and I know it’s going to last a long time. Sorry that doesn’t give you the answer you were looking for but I don’t want to give a strong opinion on a machine I haven’t used but atleast it’s close since they are both super autos from delonghi
@@JoeyVaracalli Thank you for your reply.I may consider taking Delonghi . how the maintenance wise? is it difficult/costly to maintain? For the Philips i checked the aqua filter price and its quite expensive(some says need to change quite often not even reach 1000 cups. sorry my bad english
@@SandCat11111 Don’t worry about using the filter, just use filter water through a Britta pitcher. Then for maintenance, you can descale, which can be very cheap.
How many espresso machines do you have? I had a TK-01. Delicious coffee and cappacinos. Did not love how finicky the error codes were and mess of water all the time. Returned and got the Gaggia Brera. Coffee tasted like total shit and I returned. Was thinking about getting Philips Carina 2200 w the carafe w no tube. I’m sure the coffee will suck. Maybe I should just got a semi automatic breville. The water maintenance on these super autos drives me crazy but wow the milk foam on tk-01 was incredible. Will I wait till fall 2023 for Tk-02? No. I wish I could take a company into sending me an influencer machine for IG 😂
Non of my machines are free I pay for them and keep them or sell them. If you want strong coffee with a super automatic I’d look at the delonghi. But going semi auto will alway produce the best coffee if you have the time to dial in
@@JoeyVaracalli COMMITMENT! you’re right. I think super automatic seems super fun. But you make up the time in cleaning/maintenance. Hello. I was wondering how efficient is the steam tube? İs it suitable for latte art or do I have to buy an alternative machine that has a stronger stram tube? Thanks in Advance :D
I would say most if not all super automatics use panarellos and they almost never produce good microphone it’s decent for cappuccino but not really for latte.
I have gotten micro foam for latte art with it, but it is not a science and rather an art (no pun intended). There is a tiny hole at the top of the wand. It brings in air for foaming and when blocked it will still heat the milk but will add less air and thus less foam. I line up the hole with the wand handle and then face it towards me. While steaming I will periodically block the hole with my finger. I’d say about 1/3 to 1/2 the time.
@@joelf5565 yeah it’s possible just more difficult then a traditional steam wand and the downside is it’s hard to get it hot enough when you do hit that magical microfoam
I wish I saw your video before I bought Philips 3200 before. It is far worse than Breville and you are nearly the only one on TH-cam pointed that out. Thanks anyway.
Wow thanks for the kind words but yeah for whatever reason I’m the only one on TH-cam that I know of that explains the brewing and tasting differences of super automatic vs semi automatic
Liked the overview. I have this unit and agree with a lot of your thoughts on it. I ultimately got it for the price (paid under $399) and because I really wanted to get away from a Keurig and Nespresso. I’d describe it as “good enough” for my needs. The price and convenience of a user friendly beans-to-cup experience let me overlook the shortcomings. I’d ultimately like a semi-automatic which gives me more control and better frothed milk, but I won’t go that route until this one dies and I have a bit more counter space. Have you tried adjusting the temp settings? And yes the limitation on the volume is likely because these machines were originally designed and sold for non-US markets.
Yeah I agree with you it’s worth keeping for us as well even with the short comings. I haven’t played with the temp settings yet haven’t needed to yet but might play around and see if it’s worth making a video on it
i've just got the machine and had some spare cofee powder that i first need to finish. when making coffee from powder i noticed someting annoying. when you put powder in the powder cabinet. and milk in the milk cabinet but dont have sufficiant water. when you make a cappuccino, it first pours in the milk then notices that there isnt enough water. so i refill the water. put the water tank back. the maschine continues, but instaid of coffe i get extra water in my milk. so no cappuccino. when i look at the disposal bin i see that the machine has trhown away all my unused coffee powder.
yup weird little things like that are frustrating with this machine. its not bad but I think they didn't think about everything super thoroughly like other brands have
Which machine is that I can definitely recommend others as well in that price point though that are better then this Philips. This is an older video so prices have more then likely changed
Does it do the drip cycle on the single espresso setting? I watch a distributors review that was longer but wasn't as informative as yours. Great review
@@not1au yes but generally you can avoid it by putting the espresso cup down after the drip cycle but the downside with the double shot is you would have to remove the cup twice it’s just an annoyance is all
Well the only additional feature is the auto frother which is hit or miss since as far as I know it’s not adjustable. And you get two more drink options I believe which is nice. I’m actually doing a review of the Terra kaffee in the next couple weeks I think that has a lot of potential
@@JoeyVaracalli thanks for feedback, any machines you can suggest outside of the 3200 L Go as most reviewers seem to like and adjustability of frothe is moot to me but what's next step up option. Also looking at Miele 6350 but for a significant jump in cost. Not the end of the world but if I could find something in between I would take the savings, the 3200 may do the trick and definitely will do for our sons apt
@@kiddcisco yeah depends what you are looking for specifically. If you want super automated but still in that price point I think the Terra kaffe seems quite noticing I’m actually doing a review on it next week so might want to wait till then to order unless you are in a rush. Also you could maybe look at the Jura products like the ena series which offer auto frothing and stuff but Jura is pretty expensive. I had an ena 5 that served me well for a very long time but it ended up making me wanting more control then I went with barista express but plan to upgrade to a bezzera soon
Joe Varacalli, Cool video thanks for going to the trouble. Regarding doubles, you must have issues with your machine's logic controller OR there's been a software upgrade since I bought mine. I make double's all the time. (Yes, I agree it should grind two at same time.) Process is: grind one, shot one. NO dribble of weakened water. Grind two, shot two. NO dribble of weakened water. NOW the weakened water comes out. After both shots are safely in the cup. I've had mine for three weeks; INVARIABLY it follows this routine. I'd just contact Seattle Coffee even if you purchased yours elsewhere; those friendly folks will fill you in. Let me chime in about the initial cups of coffee. Seattle Coffee says 2-3 shots minimum and frankly, I'm not surprised that one must waste the first couple of shots - not heard of non-commercial machines where you don't have to waste initial cups, ever. The manual says MANY, MANY MORE. Also - as disappointing as this may sound, I admire that Philips is honest in their manual. In my manual (I got mine July 2021) Philips says, do NOT adjust the espresso grind for a month! so the machine stabilizes on your local water. Sounds like the manual has been re-written since you bought yours. I have a note for your viewers. If your tap water is terrible and you use - in my case super filtered (1 micron) under sink- or bottled water, Seattle Coffee says DO NOT use the Aquafilter. But DO add 3-4 tblspoons of tap per water basket, because the machine must repeat must, 'see 'some of the chemicals of tap to work properly which is what every brand of espresso machine also says. Got mine for $399.00. It's far from perfect but immensely better than the Breville's and DeLonghi's I've tried. It's very close to 'real' espresso and I'm not certain anyone but an authority could identify a difference in a blind test. Six count em' six repair places from WA. state to California I called, said not to buy the Breville(s) below a certain price point (more than I want to spend). And some of those six sell and service Breville's. My Breville failed after two shots out of the box. Just as with forty other negative reviewers experienced, my Breville dribbled regardless of the grind. Starbucks for free, kindly gave me every known permutation of espresso grind and it still dribbled. Breville said "we're familiar with this issue. It's broken, please return for full refund." I'll watch your other videos.
@@JoeyVaracalli Oh, just that at 7:40 where you say there's a cycle of water that 'weakens' doubles. Was just saying mine doesn't do that. The weak water comes out after both shots are safely in the cup. Sounds like Philips in 5 months since your review has changed the logic. Hey, Joe, if if you had 1200 bucks to spend and just one choice what would you buy? Take care.
@@Allan-et5ig ohhh I understand now. If I had 1200 to spend I’d go with one of two options first being the rancilio Silvia paired with the sette 270 or I’d go with the breville barista pro
I have a Philips Series EP1220 for less than a year and have had a couple of issues with the machine and all I can say is their customer service is terrible. It's been like pulling teeth getting them to help me and when I finally did there was no communication from them. They asked for proof of purchase which I sent and when I checked back with them they said I again, need to send proof of purchase. I said to the guy why would I be sending back a machine I did not buy! What if I received this as a gift? Where would I get a proof of purchase?! Finally, after many repetitious phone calls on my part I received a prepaid return label, sent the machine out two weeks ago and still have not received a confirmation email whether they even received it and if they did what the status of my case is. This machine makes good coffee but we've had issues with it as I previously stated. I would not buy another thing from Philips due to the way this was handled.
That’s a bummer yeah the delonghi magnifica has been an absolute work horse for me if you need another machine to go to. I also like the Terra kaffee a lot but I can’t say anything about longevity
Good review. I have had the 2200 for a year now, your comments on the frother is on point. What I don't like about the machine is the water drops the go before the espresso almost all the time.
Yes I agree with that too. I have the 1200 an if I’m wanting a shot non-diluted I anticipate that drip. Mine, at least, will have almost a 2 second pause after the drip and before the coffee comes. I’ll just put the cup under during the pause. Also, mine doesn’t drip on subsequent shots. It only drips when first cycled on and off (I guess to clean the machine lines) and also upon the first coffee drink during that session.
@ SP. Tip for better frothing (more micro foam) - There is a tiny hole on the wand. I line it up directly with the black handle part and face it towards me while steaming. I’ll periodically place my finger over the hole for about 1/3 of the steaming time. When the hole is covered less air is getting in and thus reduces the foam creation. It will still heat the milk while covered, just with less foam creation. I don’t have it down to a science, but sometimes I will get perfect micro foam that has that “paint” look. I’m not good at doing art, so can’t say with certainty, but I do know what perfect micro foam to do latte art looks like. At the very least I almost always manage getting delicious latte foam that’s not too foamy.
Why is it so expensive in the US? I live in the EU and paid 330 dollars for EP2220 the chrome detailed version. Also, here the 1200 version is around 305 USD vs 330 the 2220/10. So it's only a 25 dollar difference and not 100 like in the US.
@@Can-Am1989 yeah not sure why it’s like that. Maybe it’s because Europeans drink more espresso then Americans so there is higher demand and more supply….. but that’s a complete guess
It's around $400 where I live but I've managed to get my hands on one when it got heavily discounted almost 2 years ago. I've paid around $200 for it. I agree with most of the things mentioned in this video but for $200, it was a steal. 🤩
Very true but most super automatic make an americano or coffee. This one just does a poor job of it. Also I said that to kind of reinforce that the shot sizes are very small. Basically this machine can only at most dose 12 grams of coffee which is rather small at least here in the states where double shots are kind of the standard
Exactly that’s the point of reviewing. All machines have a decent amount to offer and I kept this one around for a decent bit even though it wasn’t great
5:08 - Haha dude. It got contentious for a minute there. I half expected you to go "Office Space" on that thing. Btw, do you like Michael Bolton's music?
Did you say this is for an Airbnb? I’d think this is a little too complicated for a typical Airbnb - most guests don’t want to have to read a manual to know how to make coffee in the morning. Some will LOVE this, but I’d imagine most would want a quick easy coffee machine.
Well I got this because it seemed pretty easy hit a button and get coffee not much else to it for just a simple coffee. Plus we wanted to differentiate our place so it stood out a little bit. That’s why I was so frustrated by the oz amount because I had to buy new cups so it didn’t seem odd for people that were expecting it to fill the cup

@@JoeyVaracalli If it much diffrent in taste with a standard? Breville Barista Express that you also have I can buy for 430€ right now.
@@JoeyVaracalli it was Breville Barista Espresso Max for that price :/
@@robinbroberg1290 yeah the taste difference is noticeable as soon as you go from pressurized to non pressurized basket the taste is significantly different
@@JoeyVaracalli Okey! Then i must look for a standard instead :) Do you know any good models under 400€? What do I need to think when I looking?
I'm looking for an "affordable" espresso machine for my in-law - simple, no grinding, tamping, etc. Being an espresso lover, I think you are unfairly criticizing the amount of coffee (8 vs. 12 oz) the machine can make. Four additional ounces of water dilutes the coffee too much. There is only so much coffee you can extract out of a given puck. The intensity of the coffee varies by adjusting the amount of beans for a fixed puck size. If you were to extract 12oz of coffee from the same puck, I the result would end up being "hot brown water."
Well that's my point they should allow for grinding larger shots

@@JoeyVaracalli Oh thank you for the info
Afraid of bpa ... does this machine contain BPA Joe?
I believe it does.
Thanks Joe for the review
No problem hopefully it helped if your considering this machine
Nice phallic latte art lol. Great review, I'm just a child
Uhhhhh it’s exactly what I was thinking to lol
I haven’t played with the temp settings yet haven’t needed to yet but might play around and see if it’s worth making a video on it
Don’t get me wrong but the coffee art in 8:49 is 🙂
Yeahhhhhhhhhh
i've just got the machine and had some spare cofee powder that i first need to finish. when making coffee from powder i noticed someting annoying. when you put powder in the powder cabinet. and milk in the milk cabinet but dont have sufficiant water. when you make a cappuccino, it first pours in the milk then notices that there isnt enough water. so i refill the water. put the water tank back. the maschine continues, but instaid of coffe i get extra water in my milk. so no cappuccino. when i look at the disposal bin i see that the machine has trhown away all my unused coffee powder.
yup weird little things like that are frustrating with this machine. its not bad but I think they didn't think about everything super thoroughly like other brands have
This coffemaker is on sale right now for like 220€ and i think imma get it.
That’s a pretty decent deal
Strange question: Who makes the 8 oz. cup you show in this video? I dig it.
They stopped selling them and replaced them with these new ones amzn.to/3kTmhCC they look pretty similar but not quite the same

Not the end of the world but if I could find something in between I would take the savings, the 3200 may do the trick and definitely will do for our sons apt

Joe Varacalli,
Cool video thanks for going to the trouble.
It's broken, please return for full refund."
I'll watch your other videos.
No problem. Not sure what issues your saying I have…. Pre infusion maybe?

Good review. I have had the 2200 for a year now, your comments on the frother is on point. What I don't like about the machine is the water drops the go before the espresso almost all the time.
Yup I also can’t stand that
Yes I agree with that too.
@@joelf5565 yeah it’s to clean and also pre infuse the coffee I believe
@@joelf5565 I do exactly the same. It is almost a race not to miss the espresso drops :)

It seems like something weird to complain about. It's an espresso machine not a coffee maker. 8oz is perfect
Very true but most super automatic make an americano or coffee. This one just does a poor job of it. Also I said that to kind of reinforce that the shot sizes are very small. Basically this machine can only at most dose 12 grams of coffee which is rather small at least here in the states where double shots are kind of the standard
Even more expensive machines are not perfect, every device has something that is not perfect.
Exactly that’s the point of reviewing. All machines have a decent amount to offer and I kept this one around for a decent bit even though it wasn’t great
