  • When updating Drupal versions (8, 9, or 10), you have two primary methods: manual FTP and automatic updates.
Drupal has built-in functionality to automatically update itself for minor and security updates. However, this functionality doesn't cover major version updates (e.g., from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9).

    Manual FTP Update:
    Steps:
Backup Your Site: Before making any changes, it's crucial to back up your Drupal site files and database.
Download New Version: Download the latest version of Drupal (version 9 or 10) from the official Drupal website.
Extract Files: Extract the downloaded Drupal files to your local computer.
Connect via FTP: Use an FTP client (e.g., FileZilla) to connect to your web server.
Upload Files: Upload the extracted Drupal files to your web server, overwriting the existing files (except for sites directory and custom files you've added).
Update Database: After uploading files, visit your site's update.php page (e.g., yoursite.com/up...) to perform any necessary database updates.
Check Site: After completing the update process, check your site to ensure everything is working correctly.
    ----------
    Here's how automatic updates work:
Enable Automatic Updates: Ensure that the "Update Manager" module is enabled in your Drupal site.
Configure Settings: Navigate to the "Configuration" - "System" - "Update Manager" page in your Drupal admin interface. Configure the settings for automatic updates, including which types of updates to enable (minor, security, or development releases).
Run Cron: Drupal's automatic update system relies on the cron job being run regularly. Make sure that cron is set up and running on your server.
Monitor Updates: Drupal will automatically check for available updates according to your configured settings and apply them when available.
Note: While automatic updates can handle minor and security updates, it's still recommended to perform major version updates manually to ensure compatibility with your site's customizations and modules.
Choose the method that best fits your needs and preferences, and always remember to back up your site before making any significant changes.
