Josh, so true about all the lives affected by something we so take for granted in this day and age… an airport. It’s like a time machine. Step through a portal (terminal gate) and transport anywhere in the world in just hours. 100 years ago, a steamship might take a month or more to reach a destination that today is a mere 12 hour flight. 200 years ago, it would be a wooden ship with few guarantees of safety and more often than not, a one way journey. What a time we live in. The freedom of flight is a special thing. No country in the world allows what you and Chelsea just experienced. Enjoy it. I know I do.
the cinematic was amazing! Im 13 years old and i am working towards my private pilots license and the inspiration i received from you was a big part of why i pursued this dream. I'm based out of KFSM and I love that you can fly around the U.S. and see all this beauty the world has to offer. Thanks a ton! Elliot.
Good luck kid! This channel helped me out tremendously as a student pilot with radio comms and overall safe practices, so I’m sure the same will apply to you… Keep learning and I wish you a great career!
Josh, Thanks for making this video. As an airline pilot who flies into LAX often its quite humbling to see another type of pilots perspective of LAX, especially from a vantage point that we dont even get to see. Keep up the amazing content! I live my aviation dreams through your videos as flying for the airlines can be quite taxing and often boring as were either so busy or just to far from the surface to really get to enjoy the time in the air. Its content like yours that makes me fall in love with aviation once again. Cheers!
Your flight directly over LAX video is absolutely MAJESTIC . . . ! ! Thank you both . . . so much for having us along with you ! 😂👍
Im about to do the SFRA to take my mom to CMA for Mother’s Day! Thanks for the refresher Josh 🤙🏾
Awesome! I hope it helped 🤙🏼
More fun than the LA SFRA is the “mini route” which is quite a bit lower right over the middle of the LAX runways. But that requires approval, is one way at a time, and you're talking to the LAX tower.
Did that several times long, long ago as a student, and you'd better be on your “A” game. I was off altitude by 50’ climbing to the proper altitude (before even hitting the Bravo) and got chewed out.
Round gauges, no glass (it existed but not in what I was flying), no GoPros.
I remember seeing these pure white A380’s there for trial approval right under me, and then seeing these tiny little things nearby I realized were 747’s.
You can’t really do the mini route unless you’re coming from or going to KSMO; I've heard the request denied for someone coming in from the Valley (“do the SFRA” they'll tell you).
Incredible as a student back then flying SO close over LAX and talking to the TOWER that's landing the big boys.
By the way, that's just haze, not smog.
And loved the video. Brought back a lot of memories.
So beautiful. To be able to fly over LAX is simply amazing. What an awesome experience! Thank you again for sharing it with us!
One thing that helps me is asking SoCal what freq to expect on the other side before you switch to SFRA advisory
I'm gonna have to sign up for Cockpit Club after this one... Amazing work, Josh. Thanks for sharing!
I made the cross country adventure to OSH last year and was able to stand next to 80991. I stood there and just stared at the windscreen and thought about all the places Ive seen virtually through it. Puts a whole new meaning on watching these videos having seen it in person! Thank you and Chels for all the amazing content!
I had the opportunity to fly this from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. It was incredible.
Josh it's so thrilling to see you flying over my old stomping grounds, having grown up in Glendora, CA and learning to fly out of Brackett and Cable Airports. I tried landing at Catalina once, but the crosswind component exceeded what the 172 could handle, so we hightailed it out of there up to Big Bear for a check out there. This was all 40 years ago.
Greetings from South Africa, just found your channel, thanks for this amazing/informative video.
Flying through the SFRA is a nice option, and definitely worth trying once or twice. I'm based in SoCal so I've used it many times. For your route I would have recommended using one of the published VFR transitions. You could have stayed at 9500ft and used the Hollywood Park route or descended to 5500ft for the Coastal route. I have never been denied one of these clearances, though I suppose ATC can deny it due to high workload. Usually the controller will let you turn direct AVX once you are 5-10nm south of LAX (but still in the Bravo). The benefit of doing these is that you stay higher for the over-ocean crossing. If you do the SFRA, I would also recommend recontacting ATC once clear of the SFRA to resume flight following. You will definitely want to be in contact with ATC if something goes wrong over the water. Enjoy SoCal, and fly safe!
Just discovered this channel. I’m a few videos in and I have to say, the content is phenomenal and very informative. Great cinematography too.
Always love seeing GA flights through SoCal. Born and raised in LA. Always wished I got into aviation when I lived there. Thanks Josh. The Special Flight Rules looks so cool
Josh, so happy to see you made this video as it's one thing to read about the LAX SFRA, it's another thing to see how to apply the rules. You just relieved a lot of future flight stress for me. THANKS!
Great shot of that jet landing!
That was so amazing flying over LAX.
I just love what you did with the 172! I never considered one, until I saw 80991 finished! New engine, tuned pipe, all new glass and even the new "yoke" made a difference. You look at it and feel it all the time. I'm 72, and in no hurry anymore. Caravan, Kodiak is lots of $$. The 172 forces you to pack light, and limits passengers. I'm fine with both! LOL You also see a lot more. Thanks much for the ride, and advice! Hope your kitty is doing well, I have a relative that looks just like her! Peace 8) --gary
wow, the flight over lax was so amazing. the view at sunrise and the fog is simply beautiful 😮🥰👍
Another terrific video, brought back many memories having trained for my pilot's license in the LA area (Santa Ana, John Wayne) back in the mid 1960's. It was a great place for training. Looking forward to next installment. Thank You for a great way to start my day.
Who caught the radio transmission of "Aviation 101" at 5:30?
Hi Josh, I'm also Josh, a fresh student pilot, right at the beginning of my aviation hobby, and possibly career. Your thorough cinematic and aviation skills are quite admirable and extremely inspiring.
Thx for documenting your journeys .
Back in the day as a student pilot...I flew the LAX Corridor on my long cross country...never forget.
Great flight. When you were looking straight down on LAX reminded me of Texas......fire ants running all over the mound 🤠 And Chelsea, looking as beautiful as ever, good job flying. Thanks for sharing.
Good morning from Minnesota! Great episode!!
This is fantastic Josh!
Dang 60 hours of edit for 20 min video? Thansk for the time and videos. Let me know if in San Diego or Havasu ever.
60 hours for the feature-length 1-hour video!
Sixty hours to edit a one-hour video. When estimating editing time, it's industry standard to allow one hour of editing for each minute of finished video.
Excellent quality Josh and Chelsea! Top notch.
I love the way you talk about changing the life on an airplane, every time I fly I think, " how many life challenges are on these flight. Just about every time I go over seas it been that for me. I miss being on a plane.
Beautiful videography!
Aviation has come a long way since 1903..Amazing video, will done.
Love these adventures. You have been a huge inspiration to my flight journey. How’s your dad doing?
Nice job, Josh! Loved it! LA Special Rules is a very fascinating little tidbit that I never knew existed. Keep up the good work!
That is Magical
So, so, cool!
I regularly fly through the LA Special Corridor and you were wise going early. It can get pretty crazy in there with sometimes countless planes all going through at once. And Josh, that's not smog you were looking at. That's our SoCal morning marine layer. Welcome to SoCal my friend.
I did this kind of flight over SAN. It was surreal. My favorite flight from F70 is to Catalina. Good times 🤙🏻😎 thx for sharing Josh! Lovely video.
Fantastic video as usual Josh!! The Golden State FBO at Gillespie (San Diego) used to offer a specialized training class on the flight to Catalina. Worth EVERY PENNY!! That was "many moons" ago in my case. Thank You again!!
Josh, what an experience! Well done.
Great video as always ! When I was younger I used to race Jet Skis (PWC) from Long Beach to Catalina Island and back. Catalina is a very cool island.
Absolutely amazing flight Josh and Chelsea. Thoroughly enjoyed the video and headed over to Cockpit Club to see the Cinematic cut.
🌟 Josh @Aviation101 I grew up flying in the LA area so this really brought back some memories. Enjoyed it and well done! How about the visual "feeling" you get on final to Catalina? Kinda wild, right?
I live about an hour from KATL and I never realized how much bigger it is (in a smaller space) than LAX. Two terminals, seven concourses, and 192 gates. That's insane. I know it's the busiest, but you would think LAX would be right there with it. Especially having nearly an extra mile in area to work with.
Great video, can't wait to see the next one.
Nicely done. I appreciate ALL your hard work. Maybe you can do another about ORD the next time you fly to the EAA event. I spent 30 years at ORD in maintenance for United and love every minute of it. Take care and Happy Landings.
I've done the SFRA many times, and it especially wows passengers, but I prefer the Mini Route (although they really don't do it much anymore) and the Coastal Route when traffic is busy. I'd much rather be talking to ATC then threading a needle with a bunch of folks if possible.
Im based at KTOA and this made me realize I take both LAXSFR and Catalina for granted 😂 awesome footage and glad you enjoy flying in SoCal as much as I do! Hope to run into you one of these days!
Excellent video - thanks! Looking forward to the next.
I too saw you both at Osh having travelled from the UK to fulfill an item off my bucket list (visiting Osh). I would love to fly over LAX (been through LAX several times). We have a similar flight track in the UK (without the views) when flying down the Manchester LLR. We set our freqeuncy, set the transponder, and that's it. A 4 mile, 1300' corridor between MAN and LPL airports, just listening on the frequency
great cinematography
Definitely something on my bucket list.
Catalina Island is so beautiful!
Did this SFRA a few times during my PPL training and the day after I got my PPL too. Still blows my mind that a normal civilian is able to just do that whenever they feel like without permission. Definitely feels illegal when you're doing it hahaha
Just acquired my PPL and it's on my bucket list too.
Great video Josh. It's not published but you can get a Bravo clearance over the top of KATL going N/S. You just have to ask for it, and they will usually give it to you.
Great video. I remember doing that a few times back in the day but of course I did not have the option of goPros to record. Thanks.
Beautiful and always worth the wait 👍
loved the ethereal music over KLAX
Love your videos
Dude this is so wild, I have made a goal for myself to fly south from NorCal and do this route once I pass my IFR check ride.
One thing that has me curious is if one of the airliners on either set of parallels has to execute a missed (go around) at any point, is there any procedure in place for avoiding conflict with traffic passing over on the SFRA? Super improbable conflict, but I guess they could start the go around on a 1-2 mile final. I just always think of the what if’s lol.
Love love love your content. I do have a question. If you would have had an engine out when you were flying directly over lax, what would you have done and why?
14:00 isn't it wild how early they terminate FF? When you look at the chart you think it might be just a few miles, but it's basically from before SMO 'til almost TOA.
Cool video. What amazing views.
It’s an amazing area to fly.
Jeez, that must have been interesting before GPS, Garmin, Flight Aware ect...
THAT was pretty cool. 😁
Great video guys!
You can see my house around the 6:50 mark. N5174L from KCMA!
Not "smog" or "clouds"...that's a hazy sky. Advection fog that sometimes sits by the mountains especially in May and June. In these parts we call it "May gray" and "June gloom". Thank you for the video of our urban sprawl.
It's just crazy thinking that you can fly over one of the world's busiest airports with ZERO ATC contact. That view of LAX though. Incredible!
This is a rare video where any mention was made about keeping emergency landing sites in mind. If I flew that would be my top priority.
I heard the food at the Napa airport APC is pretty good if you happen to be in Norcal want to get something to eat.
That shot from above at LAX of the landing 787?? was epic, top.
I hate to say it, but I think that’s an (cough, cough) Airbus 😉.
@@buckerjungmann it is hard to see, but it does not matter of course, the shot is great
Agreed, awesome!
back in the day... there was only 2 corridors, and sometimes they wouldn't let you through.
You can get a bravo clearance into KLAS going northbound from Henderson to north Las Vegas airport by flying over the Las Vegas strip
Seeing this in 2024, 3 months after posting. Very surprised that you and the rules paragraph didn't mention anything about ADSB to get into the 30 mile Mode C Veil. You only said "Transponder set to 1201". Do you not need ADSB Out to fly this procedure?
Damn, I can’t believe I’ve been watching your videos for 10 years now… anyway if you ever find yourself at KHHR (Jack Northrop/hawthorne airport) they have good burgers and cocktails at the restaurant there, called Eureka… keep up the good work.
When I first saw the notification I thought this was a VASAviation video
You mean transiting the Bravo in a VFR corridor or special flight rules route. Not technically in the Bravo, if you’re not under their control:
Hey that was just fog! LA hasnt been that smoggy since the 1970s.
Honest question, what happens if there's eastbound landing traffic at LAX that has to go around a few miles out? Does ATC just say maintain 1000 or 2000 until past the airport?
It’s a shame you do not have more subscribers
That's Fog not smog that early in the morning.
Even better, if you’re in a helicopter you can cross along the shoreline at or below 150 feet and the jets takeoff directly over you as you go by.
What altitude did they give you for the flyover? Catalina is on my bucket list when I get my PPL
its 3500 southbound and 4500 northbound - published in the TAC
Hello Josh nice video its Arie from Zimbabwe 🤣😂😅 I am busy laughing at you right now i can see you are now using DJI Osmo action cameras you have finally got fed up of gopro. I don't know why many people get so attached to gopro its old fashion and a bad perfomer you have made a very wise move by switching to dji they don't over heat and shutdown like gopro. Also use the insta 360 X 3 action camera its the best 360 degree camera ever made. You make amazing videos keep it up
I use mostly GoPro!
This seems like an interesting flight but there is too much noise in the background to hear what you are saying.
“ takeoff power is set“ I thought you just firewall it for takeoff. . LOL
Yes, that is what we refer to as “takeoff power” in THIS airplane, but you certainly don’t “firewall it” in all airplanes for takeoff.
Been asking my instructor to do this with me before and they don't want too.. Now that I am a Flight Instructor, ill let my student experience this!
I can’t believe it’s been 14 years. Holy cow
Well, you're NOT in the Bravo, you're in a hole carved out from the Bravo
No shit. It’s just a title for clickbait
I feel like I need to wash LA off of me after watching this… but the explanation of the rules was exceptional.
You called it smog but I believe the proper terminology is smug
Josh got it correct. It’s called Smog. Born and raised in the LA basin. Never heard it called Smug. 😊
@@Douglas.-128 Advection fog that sometimes sits by the mountains especially in May and June. We call it "May gray" and "June gloom".
Thank you for this video, High Level Aviation Content! 👏 🫡
Unbelievable, amazing and HOLYWHA !!!! Great video shot of the commercial aircraft on runway, with 80991 tire in the shot…..
