Musically, Peter is singing the same kind of harmony that other singers have done when they were singing back up vocals to Dave on this track. In the Devotional tour, they had two female gospel singers who sang these intervals in two-part harmony, while Martin sang his backing vocals for this track. I'm not trying to change your mind per se, but I don't think he was singing dramatically in my own opinion. As a musician, not everyone who plays an instrument can sing at the same time. Since they were doing a stripped down, acoustic version of this song, Peter was just trying to provide harmonies for Martin's vocals. But hey, you have your taste and everyone else has their tastes. Cheers.
Dave sings it so raw and heartwrenching, but Martin's version is more introspective and connected. This is a really special song.
