You can also see Clarke's influence - the short chordal melody from 2:56 to 3:07 is what Mark King later developed into "Dune Tune".

As a teen, back in the mid to late 70s, I played bass guitar and Stanley Clarke was my ultimate bass hero. I spent hours and hours playing that album trying to duplicate Stanley's unreal bass licks. Stanley Clarke, along with the otherworldly Chick Corea and Billy Cobham, used to totally knock my socks off!!! Stanley Clarke's 1976 album, "School Days," still sends chills up and down my spine to this very day.

Over 3 years ago, I was playing guitar on a street corner in downtown St. Petersburg, FL, when this guy walked by. I hollered at him: "Hey, do you know you look like Frank Gambale?" He replied: "Yes, because I am Frank Gambale!" And we stood on that corner and talked guitar for a spell. He as in town for a local gig (Chick lives in Clearwater, a few miles away) and decided to visit the Dali Museum. I actually met him years before at gig in Atlanta. I also met Stanley at the Atlanta Jazz Fest. No more a warm and friendly dude!

So going way back to '70 or '71 or so, I remember a skinny kid named Lenny White. I must confess I've since strayed from fusion somewhat to explore the many other genres of jazz & it's extensions. Here, I can only see long shots, profiles and 1 full facial of the drummer, approx. 8 minutes in. Can anyone tell me definitively is it a heavier Lenny on my little phone screen or is it Steve Gadd, whom I've heard more than studied photos of. I'd also appreciate more info on this very good guitarist. Would like to hear more of him. Di Meola was extraordinary. RIP Armando Anthony Corea. RTF forever!

One of the few pieces where the bass is the reason for the song. Or something like that. You know what I mean. I used to go to every concert Clarke, Ponty and Corea did in the late 70s, in Los Angeles. Even in small venues like the Roxy. Hmmm. This version is the best I've ever heard. That violin really adds so much. Having two unusual rock instruments improvising against each other (bass and violin) is really quite unique. Whoa, this thing really gets going. Fantastic. I can only wonder how these guys get on each other's nerves sometimes (it happens with all humans). "Oh, there Chick goes with his whole tone scale thing..."

I started listening to Stanley in 78’. Caught him on of all places, Midnight Special!!!
Why it took to 1978? I live in Nebraska where there is Only top forty Rock, Country and back than that awful disco.

Doesn’t get any better than that!! COOL! I was stunned that I got to see Stanley in 2008 with Return to Forever!
They actually made a stop In Omaha. What a Great Show.

Pat Peterson Saw RTF and went backstage and had 3 of the band members sign the concert booklet. Then I sat in the front row and at the end of the show I held up the booklet and Chick signed it. I have all four signatures. Larry Coryell was the opening act. RIP.

What I love is that these musicians of later in life having traveled round the sun more than some of us CAN STILL ROCK AND BRING IT! "Age" is a number and nothing to do with Music and ability. !! Ah love this!!

Saw this line-up in Perth about 2014. This brought the house down. From Stanley Clarke's fabulous album of the same name!

Not to take anything away from Al DiMeola but Frank Gambale sure is good on guitar.

I agree... He usually has a sweeter overdrive tone that is alot warmer than he was using here... Put in Frank Gambale NAMM 2020, on TH-cam, and listen to THAT...!!! It's awsome.. you won't be disappointed..

@@richardgleichmann7671 Frank is way better than Al. Harmonically, creative wise, inventor of the modern sweep picking method and the nicest guy ever. I don't know what happened here with his tone, it's usually a lot better.

The interplay bewteen Jean Luc Ponty and Lenny White is such a classic "Question and Answer" segment. of this dynamic live performance. .
