Chantal Alison Konteh dedicates her life to fighting period poverty - a public health issue as detrimental as food insecurity, but often ignored by larger society. Around 200 women in NYC depend on Chantal and the small non-profit she runs every month for access to clean hygiene items they normally couldn’t afford.
This documentary follows Chantal as she is fighting a steep uphill battle against ineffective legislation and dried-out funding to keep helping her community in a world where both periods and poverty are shrouded in shame and stigma. Furthermore, the film explores the issue of period poverty and situates it in a larger, societal context while following Chantal. It also gives a platform to the affected women. A deeply personal story, it shines a light on an issue growing in the dark that affects 1 in 3 menstruators in the U.S. alone.
