    I have a K40 and been wanting to upgrade to a 24x18 inch bed. Is the beam still strong enough at this larger size to cut 3mm acrylic? Do you have any plans or diagrams available for reference? I've been thinking about using 20x20 extruded aluminum for the frame and V-slot for the rails.

    Is the x-axis, which just consists of the hiwin rail, stiff enough in your experience?? Or will it result in "bowed" lines when acceleration is high and the moment of inertia of the laserhead leads to a force and thereby bending the rail?

    Do you have some sort of a parts list and suppliers?
    Thanks!

      Thanks Arnaud. I will go over some more details in the next video when I redesign a few parts. Hopefully it won't take me a month to upload the next video lol. As far as the parts list, the video discription has some of the parts, and I will be adding to the list in the next couple of days. I have to track down a few sources as most of this was bought more then a year ago. I would love to see what your working on if you want to post some photos.

    What's the backstop made from? As in, what material stops the laser when it's done cutting?

    • @PhysicsAnonymous
      @PhysicsAnonymous  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Isaac Marcus what you see in the video is just a sheet of acrylic. It's painted on one side which is why it's gray. It worked ok but eventually started to warp and get pretty nasty the more you cut on it. I have changed it for some thin ceramic tile from home Depot since then and that seems to work really well. Absorbs the laser with no signs of wear or reflection.

    @bartduino2452 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    As someone working for a company that uses lasers to cut holes in car frames at their factory's, I would highly suggest you to paint that thing black. It sure does look nice but that laser is way to dangerous to be in an open space.
    I had a colleague who walked in a room where our robot was busy working on a car. The guy never looked at the laser but by just walking in the room he got hit by a diffuse beam, making him partly blind... If you do want to look at it, at least use protective glass (in the same color as the laser). But even then, never look at the source.

    • @maximumwoof8662
      @maximumwoof8662 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      in this case, the laser is uv.. so what color -uv should the safety glasses be ?

    • @bartduino2452
      @bartduino2452 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      maximum woof what about uv protection? Or do you think you need to wear sunglasses only to see some shades darker...

    • @weeeeehhhhh
      @weeeeehhhhh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two things: First, laser safety glasses are not all equal. They need to be certified for the particular wavelength of the c02 tube, so get the right ones.
      Second, you shouldn't use clear acrylic for the side panels. I know it's cool to see everything working, but get some thin steel or aluminium for the sides and a tinted polycarbonate for the lid. C02 lasers don't cut poly, so it's "relatively" safe to use. I'm starting my build now with an 80W RECI tube and I'm doing my safety stuff at the start. It's nice to have two functional eyes ;)

    • @microreniassance2929
      @microreniassance2929 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point. That's 2 functional eyes. "Dang!" Don't look at laser with remaining eye!!!

  • @nukularpictures
    @nukularpictures 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    really? co2? That doesnt sound right with a co2 laser since the gas will absorb the laser radiation beatifully. The energy the laser photons have matches exactly the energy that is needed to activate the CO2 (obviously since that is how a laser light is created) and so would cause a new emmision in a random direction. I wouldnt be suprised if you would lose 50% of the power by doing that. I personally would go with N2 or normal air for the easy things.
    And a word of warning: The tube is a 30w tube but overdriven to 40w. So if you want to extend the life you shouldnt go over 70% power.
