  • Viewer digression, this video might put you to sleep unless you really want to listen to me talk about my rust control experiences on the Jeep....
    I was asked by a subscriber to make a video about some of the rust control products I use on the Jeep Cherokee and my experiences with the Jeep XJ Box Rocker mod. I did the Box Rocker mod about 3 years ago and over that time I have made some adjustments over my original install.
    I have owned the Jeep XJ for just over six years and the frist two years of its ownership was spent doing restoration and corrosion prevention to the underside, inside the frame, doors, box sections, cavities and seams. It took many many months and many more weekends to chase, cut out, weld in and clean back signs of corrosion. It was at this time that I began using Dinitrol 3125 HS, Dinitrol 447 Protect Super and Testrolseal by Carplan (not sponsored).
    These three products have been protecting the Jeep for around four years now and last month I decided it was time to see what was going on under the protective coating.
    It took several weeks to strip everything off but once removed I was delighted to see no returning rust or continued growth (for lack of a better word) of existing surface rust.
    I think this probably the first time that I felt like I made some progress and wasn't disappointed in the results when It came down to rust control.
    I have used other products like prevention primers, converters, oils, paints and encapsulates and sadly most don't live up tp the label on the box.
    Penetration and water displacement combined with rust inhibitors is probably why the 3215 HS works so well although I am sure it can be made more effective with thinners and high pressure application through a cavity wax atomizer nozzle which Is how I have applied it this time round.
    The key is always in the prep with any product and obviously a shot blaster and complete removal of all rust is the absolute. But this isnt always an option given DIY garage tools, time, resources and the plain fact that rust between seams requires removal of spot welds and seam separation. With the practicalities in mind Rust Control is a more realistic option for a lot of people like me and I am very happy with the results.
    Waxes like Dinitrol can put some off as they are known for attracting dirt and being difficult when working on the Jeep. My experience with it has been pretty positive and with several years of off-roading it has always cleaned up back to black with a pressure washer and also been easy to remove with thinners when work in a specific area is required.
    Anyway I thought I would share my experiences with these products as many like myself want to stop existing rust, protect and prevent further corrosion from occurring.
    Thanks for watching.

    Great Video Mike.
    I have this job to do this summer. Going to strip out the entire interior. Cut out any rust I can find. Cut out the rockers. Weld in the 2x6 and build some splash guards!
    Your diagram showing where the water collects was really helpful.
    Thanks 👍

      Sounds like a solid plan. The splash guards are pretty underrated. Mine are just 2mm aluminium but I guess you could make them put of steel if you wanted an actual skid plate. Thanks for watching

    Didn't put me to sleep, in fact I was just getting settled into it with a fresh cuppa when it ended, and I don't even have a Jeep! :D But seriously, fully appreciate you have work, family, actually getting the work done on the Jeep when opportunities arise to use 'lift time' etc. so thanks for the vids you do :) It's turned chilly too in the UK, we're going down into the single digits this week but looks like Sweden is heading below zero. Hope you can get a winter overnight camp in before Christmas - I'm interested to see your new system; a basic tent, quilt and Thermarest for me, assuming we are 'allowed out to play' next month ;) Season's wishes to you and the family.

    Some interesting tips there mate. There cant be very much left on that Jeep now that is factory standard is there. I think you've pretty much had hands on every part of it. For a decent weatherproof adhesive sealant I've always used Sikaflex which I find to be very good too. Also keen to see how you get on with that heater, I know we've already spoken about yours but I've also just purchased one with a view to somehow getting it fixed into our trailer.

      You have a lot of 3M products in the USA I think? 3M Cavity Wax Plus is pretty good for inside of box sections like rocker panels and doors. We used it at work and its the same as Dinitrol 3125HS. Its really thin and creeps in everywhere. Best apply it on a hot day or warm garage. Eastwood Black Heavy Duty Anti Rust is like a wax based self healing undercoat that you can spray over the chassis and floor pans etc.. You don't want to apply it to flakey rust. You can use it on light surface rust on a frame but i probabaly wire wheel out panel rust, on the underside of a floorplan for example, as its such thin metal.

      It comes with the Dinitrol 3125 spray. You can probably find something similar by looking for 'cavity wax diffuser hose' or something. Normally you can get an attachment for a shiltz gun

    Really valuable info! I've just started having a go at the underseal. I may have made the mistake of rust converting then painting then waxing. I prefer the sound of just using dinitrol. Do you have to strip the chassis of any things attached axles suspension etc?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you will be okay, if you have done all that work then perhaps wait until the next time round. I left the axles and everything else on and just wrapped bags around them. Also old towels.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For such a large area like a bed I would spray it and do three coats. Its good stuff but it can chip when abused. Rolling on works too but it goes on a bit thick.

    Hey! After watching all your workshop videos and a couple of years of dreaming about my own daily driver that's capable off road, I finally got myselt an xj! It's rusty, so I'm probably going to try to fix it all up based on your recommendations. So a question right away, did you clean the inside of the frame rails in any way, or just blasted them with the wax? What are you reccomendations? And also, did you not install frame stiffeners for the rear of the frame or am I mistaken? Really enjoy your videos, keep it up!

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Congratulations on the XJ! I never cleaned inside the frame as there didn't seem to be anything bad inside from what I could see. Surface rust I'm sure though. I did try and clean inside the frame as best I could but its not that easy. I sprayed Dinitrol 3125 thinned with thinners 40/50 in there on a wand with a diffuser on the end. Let it dry and then put another coat in there of 3125 with no thinners.
      It has a rust inhibitor in it and it genuinely soaks into rust and displaces moisture, thinning it helps though. Its seems to have worked for me because when I drilled holes through the floor pan to access the cross member bolt many years later, inside the frame was totally coated in Dinitrol and it looked as fresh as they day I put it on. Its good stuff, just pricy.
      I made stiffereners for the rear myself.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think if your using the rattle cans then it will be quite a lot as you cannot thin it down. I would say 10 rattle cans of 3125 to cover the whole underside and inside the doors, rockers, front and rear wings. You can then probably just use about 5 cans of the 447 to then coat the underside as a tougher later.
      If your going to use the 1L bottles with a compressor then you only need 4 cans of 3125 to do the whole Jeep. Pour half of the first can into another pot to save and then use thinner in the first can for a 50/50 mix so the first application penetrates everywhere. You can then take the half of the first can you poured out and do the same again with a 50/50 mix of thinner so that the first can is basically a really thinned down application.
      After this use the 3125 as normal across the whole Jeep again until you have full coverage and then only two cans of 447 will do your undercarriage.

    I just went ‘full-retard” on my near-mint ‘96 and my wife’s even cleaner ‘99 XJ with Fluid Film before the annual SaltFest in No. Indiana. A couple of holes were added under the driver side door sills where the plastic trim piece is. Then I added a snap cap to cover the hole where I feed the wand into, then the trim piece covers the cap. I usually reapply it again in January or early February on the exposed floor pans.
    I’ve heard of some people using a concoction of wax toilet rings melted with boiled linseed oil And kept warm whilst propelling it out of an undercoating gun, but I’ve never tried that.
    I find that the annual application of fluid film is meditative.🤷‍♂️

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness

      I've actually heard about this linseed oil thing too but I have no experience with it. Sounds like a solid job though. Fluid film is certainly good stuff in those hard to reach places. Thanks for watching

    Mike, i have to weld in new floorpans and while i'm doing it, i'm installing frame stiffners as well. While im doing that i might cleanup the underneath and do a little rust protection. A question. Should i use a primer or Rust Encapsulator on the bare metal of the jeep before using 3125 and then 447? Or can it go on the bare metal?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The advantage of the 3125 is that it will penetrate existing rust but if your welding in new metal that's rust free I would certainly consider priming and painting it prior to applying the rust control.
      You can use the 3125 and 447 straight over the new metal and welds and I am sure it will protect it but since its rust free to start with I would add a 3rd layer of protection in the form of primer and paint so you know its good.
