    This worked for me, and I just want to thank you LLLReptile, because my snakes had it pretty bad. I followed EVERY step, and POOF the mites were instantly gone. I bought the two products you used, and I never have had mites again. All the other crap I bought in stores, were just that, CRAP. Thank you so much! One day I did research, and found this video, ordered it, and saved my snakes lives. Thank you again!

    thanks soo much for ur help. i cant really tell if my ball python has mites or not because what i see crawling on my ball is white and its the size of like a grain of sand and im just not sure if it mites or springtails there were about 4 or 5 crawling on him also i suspect that it might be spring tails is beacuse i have a log hiding place and a large piece of drift wood and cypress bedding and i spray down the take like 3 to 4 times a day to keep the humidity up.

    If you notice a couple of black specks on your snake that aren't moving, is it still mites? They just stay in the same spot and everywhere I've read it says they are supposed to move.

    So I got my first snake a month ago. When I first got him I didn't see any signs of blood mites, but he is a Cali king snake so most of him is black so it'd be hard spot them.Then today (a month later) when I went to clean out his water bowl there were probably twenty black little bugs floating in the water. I don't really know what else it could be but it's odd how I only notice now. I never saw him soaking or anything on him when I take him out to hold him. I got Bandit from snakes at sunset (there aren't any reptile places that sold king snakes by me) so maybe he had them from the beginning? Also it could only really be blood mites, right?

    I decided to get a redtail boa last week and noticed a few days later she has mites :( i have had my boa in a "boaphile" enclosure with plastic hide and water bowl but i have gone to having no substrate now since i first noticed the mites. My normal substrate is going to be an astroturf/carpet like material. My question is do you recomend that i put the carpet back in the enclosure for this treatment ? Thanks. great channel btw !

  • @sappersniper5
    @sappersniper5 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks I like what you said about, having mites actually means that enclosure conditions are what they should be. I bought a ball python from Petco, and the poor thing had mites, and I pulled a tick of of him. So he is on his way to being a happy and healthy guy.

    Are these stuff safe to use on a baby corn snake? In smaller quantities obiously, but is it safe? I bought these from you at your website to have just in case for my normal corn snake, but there is this little albino corn snake in a pet store that i want but i saw mites on it. It is a hatchling and i would like to buy it and treat it's mites. So i need to know if it is safe for a hatchling. Thank you.

  • @phoebepmai1
    @phoebepmai1 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    also my python is not soaking so one more thing that make me suspect that it might not be mites. but i just want to be safe than srry. so like you said i should keep it pretty dry untill the problem is gone but how do i know if the mite is gone i search but i cant seem to spot any out in the enclosure so should i rinse out all of the vines and log and change the bedding before i start misting it again? or do i just mist the cage and it would be ok even with the pam inthere as long as its dried?

    Before getting a new snake, I always put the tub in the freezer for a day or two (I use a rack system), then soak the tub and its hide it hot hot water and spray provent-a-mite once a day until my snake gets to me. After I receive the snake, i check it for mites and whether I can see the mites or not, I treat the snake and keep them away from all my other reptiles for at least a month. It's worked perfectly for years

    I just want to say, my ball had mites when I first got her from the breeder (I let the breeder know...)
    I used the stuff in the tan spray bottle that she has displayed. I sprayed it in the 4 corners of the aquarium and along the edges and under the water bowl (just pretty much anywhere my snake doesn't go directly) and the stuff worked like a charm! After about 2 weeks of spraying I never saw another mite again.

    I found out the hard way that if you use wood products for bedding, treat the stuff before you put it in the enclosures. I opened a new bag of Reptibark when redoing my boa's tank and noticed it was wetter than normal. Few days later, I noticed she is soaking in her pond a little too often. I found 6 tiny dead mites at the bottom and 1 live one on her head. I freak out but this video calmed me down. Guess this is more common than I thought.

    I would recommend scrubbing out the water bowl too, as there can be mites on it, esp as the snakes with mites often soak in the bowls (obviously don't put pesticide on the water bowl.)

    • @LLLReptile1

      kittysparkleeyes They work. You have to keep this up for about 3 weeks though, as yes, eggs hatch again, and if you don't keep up constantly, they will breed more.

    Hello - thanks for this video. There are many stories of reptiles being harmed by mite treatments. I am one of those stories (and no it has nothing to do with any advice given in this video. All responsibility is mine).
    Do you have any advice on treating snakes for permethrin poisoning? I understand that it is serious - my Liasis mackloti is under observation at the vet. I am just looking for any advantage that I can from people with extensive husbandry experience and who care for reptiles.
    I doubt I am the only one who could benefit from this kind of advice.
    thanks in advance

    Is it not ok to dump the bedding, bag it up, and get it out of the house? I'd prefer moving mine to paper towels until I'm sure things are cleared up, and then I was gonna switch from cypress over to aspen anyway, as it seems cleaner all around from the tubs in which I've already experimented with it.

    • @markgiacalone9800
      @markgiacalone9800 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nickthestick26 What I do is this: remove the bedding, put in in a plastic bag, spray a quick shot of Prevent-a-Mite in there, close it up and throw it in a garbage can outside the house. Then I wash the snake gently in room-temp water to get rid of mites that are visibly on the snake.
      While treating a snake cage, remove water bowl, bedding, hides. Spray the cage floor with just enough Prevent-a-Mite to fog up the cage just a bit, no more needed. Let it dry 100%, may take a few hours depending on ambient temps and humidity. When dry, I wipe the cage sides with a paper towel. Then I put in either newspaper or packing paper as bedding, then hides (wash the hides with soapy water 1st). Do not put back a water bowl for at least 24 hours.
      Spraying a little Provent-a-Mite around the outside perimeter of the snake cages once a week for 3 weeks will take care of any mites that are outside the cage and try to come back in. A little goes a long way. Typically, doing the one treatment inside the cage plus the spraying around the cage perimeter a few times after is often enough. If you see mites again after 2-3 weeks, treat the cage again.

    i recsued a ball python that hadent had a heat lamp or anything just a towel in a 24" by 12" in tank since he was baby hes inbetween 6 months to a year, i took him to the vet they told me he had pnemonia, and a 50% chance of living, i went and bought him beding and a heat lamp and had him in it for a couple days and noticed it was making the tank really moist and i figured that wouldent be good for a respatory infection, so i took out all the beding and cleaned the tank out...

  • @coldblooded5150
    @coldblooded5150 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    yea if you use it on the bedding and let it air dry like for most snakes the permethrin in the spray is still toxic to hognose. if you read the companies disclosure it says safe to use on boas, pythons, and most colubrids if used as directed. but if you email the company they say it should be safe but was never tested directly with hognose. and i have found dozens of cases that hognose were damaged or killed with permethrin sprays

    • @LLLReptile1

      Provent a mite works best when it settles into the bedding, and it also treats all cage furniture. If you're not using provent a mite, then yes, you should remove everything in the cage and clean it thoroughly.

    I used this method to treat my snakes about 2 weeks ago exactly, except I used paper towels instead of substrate. Between my room mate and I, we have about 17 snakes. The mites have been a nightmare, and my room mate has handled this issue with no urgency. Which totally sucks because out of 17 snakes, I only own 3 of them. I seriously and as immidiately as possible want these mites gone! 2 days later my juvenile milksnake started twitching and was not responding normally. I figured that because I used paper towels that I accidentally poisoned him. So I worked him back to health by removing him from the enclosure and giving him warm baths for the next few days. He survived but I knew I would have to treat all of the snakes again soon so this time I used substrate and followed all of the steps. Now my room mate's mexican king snake is showing similar signs. What am I doing wrong? And how can I get rid of these mites without killing my reptiles?

    • @LLLReptile1
      @LLLReptile1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you're not letting the cages air out enough before putting the snakes back in, or that you are using too much of the reptile relief when treating them. Smaller snakes are extremely sensitive to both types of mite treatment, and it's easy to overdo it with them. You could try letting the cages air out for a full hour or more with the provent a mite, and soak the smaller snakes first before treating them with reptile relief. A 15 minute soak in plain water, then dry them off, then only a squirt or two of the reptile relief to soak in for another 15 minutes, then a 30 minute soak in water again should keep you from seeing neurological issues with your animals again.

      Yes, this can work for blue tongues too. Just be extra careful not to get the treatment in your skink's eyes.

    I don't have PAM I have some Wipe Out 1 for the cage, I soaked the cage and everything in water with little bit of bleach then I dry it and use wipe out. Would that work to kill the mites in the cage? And for my snake (I have a ball python) I soaked it in luke warm water and then sprayed it with reptile spray that you used in the video. How many times a week or month do I do this to the snake and the cage to ensure that all the mites are gone? Like you said it's poison and I don't want to over do it. Thank for your help I feel really bad that my snake has mites and I want to get rid of all of them asap :(

    • @LLLReptile1
      @LLLReptile1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll want to get the PAM as soon as you can, it gets all the eggs and mites that hide in nooks and crannies. The bleach helps, but it won't quite get everything possible. Treat the enclosure and the snake once a week for 1 month, and that should prevent the mites from ever coming back.

    How do you know when the mites are completely gone?

  • @rarrokla
    @rarrokla 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have used Reptile Relief on four different occasions and I don't think it worked well. Maybe others have had other experiences. Frontline works like a charm but you have to be very careful with it.

    • @LLLReptile1
      @LLLReptile1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      rarrokla It works best if you soak the animal (ensures it's hydrated before spraying poison on it), then dry it off and spray the reptile relief. It will not make mites fall off, but it will kill them - you also need to apply it thoroughly and leave it sit for 15 minutes or so. It will not treat mites in the cage, which is why the provent a mite is suggested with it.

    no one ever means to get them haha!!! i have a collection of almost 30 snakes and had an outbreak (im pretty sure they came with a bag of bedding i got at a reptile expo). It was probably the worst couple months of my life dealing with an outbreak with a collection that big. idk what you keep but that many snakes, on top of them being mostly large boas, is a literal nightmare. hope you never have to deal with them lol

    • @LLLReptile1
      @LLLReptile1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Samuel Sucre Mites are not going to transmit IBD. Really, really, really unlikely to happen. Soak the animal, and hand clean it as best you can. The most important part is keeping up on the treatment once you start, as the eggs will be buried and keep hatching.

    • @ryansullivan369
      @ryansullivan369 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Best just to throw all the bedding out and replace it with new stuff and treat that bedding as well as doing the reptile spray. In addition to removing mites you see on the animal. I had a minor case a few years back. Kinda funny though, I removed one from around the eye and ever since that snake won't let me put him down now when I handle him, he must be super grateful I did that.

    Can humans gey mites from there snake?!

    • @akwlb2
      @akwlb2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean you wanna kill those bastards because they reproduce like rabbits but everyone has their own mites. Dogs have their own mites so those are reptile mites.

    • @akwlb2
      @akwlb2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It relates because he is making it seem that if the mites his snake has doesn't go for him he will not care much to try and eliminate them. Afterwards I tell him that no they do not go on him because every group species has their own kind of mites. You just need to think to see the relationship.

    • @LLLReptile1
      @LLLReptile1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not as well as it kills live mites. Sometimes the eggs are wedged into places, maybe there's eggs under other eggs that don't get hit by the spray - it's always better to be safe than sorry.
